Canon 35mm F2

Anybody consider 35/2 as a credible alternative to the Sigma 30/1.4? Of course this would be on crop sensor. Seems the 35 is lighter and cheaper, but not comparatively sharp till f/4.

It's certainly a credible alternative to the Sigma. See my cereal box
shot at f/2 in a previous post in this thread. It's sharp enough at f/2.
That cereal box shot had staggered boxes to test the focus accuracy.
Look at the center box. Sharp enough for me.

I have both it and the Sigma. I could live with either one, but
prefer the Sigma as I prefer the extra stop and the full-time manual
focusing capability.

Yes, i sold my 30f/1.4 to get the 35f/2.

I wanted a smaller, lighter lens. And one that wouldnt give me soft images when shooting distances outdoors.

when i had it on my 350D i could put the camera in my jacket pocket with the lens still on. like a super P&S. i used it to take to my gigs and give it to people to shoot the band with.

Its also a great walk around lens. although i still have it i dont use it much these days.
This is one of my favourite shots with the 35/2

When I bought the 5D I sold the 35/2. I have the 28 f/1.8 and a 45 TSE and thought that the 35/2 served no purpose (I shot a lot with it on the 20D--where it was the equivalent of about 56). I'm still not sure i need it, but think it might be nice to have in the bag--though I have 2 zooms that cover the range--almost (f/2.8). The joy of it is its size. I've contemplated buying it and the Xti for a pocketable cam.

I still think you would like it on the 5D if you shoot in that range.

Oh yes, I do remember the fantastic pictures of your kid! While I'd like a sharp, fast lens, there is a lot to be said for light and cheap. Plus who knows, maybe Canon will develop a fast, standard lens for crops. The 35/2 might serve as a good substitute till then.

In our dreams, Canon would of course update and add USM to their non-L primes, like the 35 F2 and 50 F1.4, but this makes no financial sense for Canon. These upgrades would make these lenses 90% as good as the Ls but for 25% of the price.

Too bad I rented a 35 F1.4L and fell in love with it.
