CF; what is better, more of small or few of large...?

MTBF goes up, but cards still fail. I've had a Sandisk CF card and a Sandisk SD card fail on me. I was able to recover some of the files, but not all. If you read the luminous-landscape article about the camera problems on a Antarctica trip, you'll remember that many of the people on that trip had card problems, too.

Personally, I'll stick with 2 GB cards as the biggest I'm willing to risk right now. If I was a working pro I might be even more conservative. How important are the photos you take? If a card failure means losing irreplaceable shots, the answer may be different that if you're shooting your kid's soccer game, and can just take more photos next week if you have to.

Remember when you used to choose between 12, 24, or 36 prints on a roll?
i am in the market for some compact flash cards for my 10D... i've
used Lexars in the past and have very good experience with them...
i want to buy an additional 8gb, but i was wondering if i should
buy 4 2gb, or 1 8gb, or 2 4gb...?

in terms of minimizing loss incase of a bad card, is it usually
better to get more of the smaller ones, or is this a moot point to
be worried about...?

Of course I haven't done this myself yet, but my wife says to put my return address on them incase I drop one somewhere. If someone finds it, how will they know where return it. A phone number would be good also. I haven't done it yet, but should. I hate it when she says I told you so!! I guess I should label my camera's and lense too.

I have had two cards go bad in the past 5 years of my digital life. One was corrupted in S. Africa. Fortunately it was fixable. The other one I washed. (don't ask ! ) Buy 1 gb cards - as many as it takes to make you happy. If something happens, you won't lose everything like you would on a big card.
