Decided on the 5D after much hand wringing...I have a 17-40.already,I need a flash, more cards and can afford one lens for now...For landscape/scenics mostly...I see some grumbling here about the 24-105,for my use the 70-200f4 IS maybe? with the shorter zoom I'd have a lot of overlap? Thanks for advice,Bob

I use the 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8IS and couldn't be happier. It's tought but if I had to pick between the 24-70 and the 70-200 I think I'd have to stick with the 70-200.

Now I wish I had the 24-70 instead of the 17-40 but I'm coming from a crop camera..Yes,the 70-200 is the way go I think,Thanks for the reply,Bob

I purchased the 5D in December 2006 with the EF 24-105 lens and couldn't be happier. It has been on the camera since then and have also seen no dust spots. I have the EF 70-200 IS mounted on my 30D and with the 1.6 crop factor the focal lenth (112mm) picks up nicely from the EF 24-105 and goes to 320mm. The 5D is a fabulous camera and the lens I find to be excellent! Bill

play with your kit as it stands now - you just might not need it that often for scenics / landscape.

your 70-200 will be good for subject isolation, and you just may just decide that your 17-40 does the trick for the rest. with the 17-40 be prepared to stop down for corner to corner sharpness .. say around f8 to f11.

you may find the money more well spent getting a macro or other lens that you lust after ;)

I'm fairly set on the 70-200 but wondering what to do for wider, keep and use my 17-40 or order the 24-105 with the 70-200 and sell my 17-40,money is an object for us,as I still need a flash and more cf cards and a bigger cam bag, lowepro sling or tamrac velocity 7,Bob

I'd keep the 17-40, get the 70-200 f4L without IS (and save almost 50% of the price) unless you have a real problem with camera shake.

You could then pick up a 50mm 1.8, a third party flash (I've been pleased with the Sigma EF-500 DG Super) and a 4GB Sandisk card with the money saved over the 70-200 f4 IS Llens.

Good luck whatever you choose

Kevin

Hi Bob,

I agree with Patrick about the 24-70 and the 70-200,2.8L IS. You really learn to enjoy that 2.8 for its speed of focus and lowlight ability. Overlap is not a big concern at 24-40.

I also have the 1.4X TC for the big zoom and considering adding the 2X. Thanks for the Northwest pointers BTW.

what I'd do is use the 17-40 and see. seriously.

since money is tight, stick with just the 70-200 - canon lenses have a great resale value, so dont' be concerned that you are stuck with a lens after purchase. then if later, you decide that you don't use the 17-24 range and miss the 40-70, get the 24-70 or the 24-105 (if weight is an issue).

Also as another idea, you can do what I do if I'm unsure, rent the various lenses for a day and try them out. For $15-$20 a day, you'll have a good idea how you like the lens. in the end, that's what matters.

The 50 f/1.4 is a great little gem.

tacksharp when slightly stopped down, and open wide it turns the night into day - no need for a flash at all.
It's relatively cheap too !
Can't go wrong with that one.

Enjoy !

Bye,

don't buy a dSLR ...

but the 24-105 f4L comes close ...

Let's hear it for the 85mm f/1.8 too. Excellent medium-longish indoors lens on a 5D! Bright, tack sharp and fast-focusing.

Start with a 50 1.4 if you really want to see what your new 5D will do! Then if you can swing it the BEST prime for my money 135L. If you need wide I just picked up a Sigma 24 1.8 I'm VERY impressed with it! Too many ups and downs and comprimises with zooms and more expensive!
good luck

Using zooms I think, back in my A1 and F1 days I used mostly primes...I will take a hard look a going back to primes as this camera seems to be able to out resolve some of the best zooms...The 5D I mean.........Thanks for the opinions,Bob

1:- some copies are Soft at 105mm wide open, I checked three and all were acceptable but two were better than the third - I bought the sharpest one - the nice thing was that all three were perfect at 24mm - no decentering issues like most 17-40s have and many 24-70Ls

2:- Vignetting .. Like the cheapo Nikon 18-135 (another lens which is sharper than far more expensive glass edge to edge) the 24-105 does a trade where you get sharp edges at F4 (better than the 24-70L) but they're darker - the nice thing is that Vignetting can be sorted, soft edges can only be cropped out.

Otherwise it's not much bigger than the 17-40L and even looks similar, has a superb IS system (we're talking 1/8th sec at 24mm !!) and doesn't cost the earth - so long as you don't get a 105-blurrer you're onto a good one as QC / sample variaion is better with this lens than any other L Standard or wide zoom it would seem !.

Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist

I have a prime 50mm f 1.4 and prime 85mm f 1.4 and both are sweeeeet lenses for portrait work and the 50 will double nicely with the full frame for landscape stuff. I agree that the 50mm is an excellent choice. The price for each is approximately $400.

I did see that great lens review site...I'll wait 'till mid May,no longer, for rebates then place my order from B&H for the 5D and 70-400f4 IS,am leaning towards the 24-105 but as I have a 17-40 sure is a lot of overlap there for the money..But wide on a FF sure is FUN! Thanks for all the advice,Bob

i got lazy with the 24-105, sold it. My only zoom now is 17-40, primes - 24, 50 and 135 (all non-L :-)
