5D & 50mm 1.8 MkII

I found that my 5D with this lens at 1.8 would front focus like crazy.
It's a cheap and lite lens, but it's definitely not worth more than 100$

I don't seem to have that problem with this combination, focuses pretty well.

If you get a good one, it's superb even wide open for a lot of the frame and by F2.8 is stunning but being made of thin plastic means that sample variation is massive..

This is why the old Mk1 sells for more than a new Mk2 as the build is the same as the more expensive "ugly duckling" primes (28 F2.8 / 35 F2 etc) and tolerences are tighter.. I sold my Mk1 after swiching the main part of my rig to Nikon as I got offered a good price for it, it was a top copy even by Mk1 standards and mint / Boxed too, but a couple of months ago I saw three used Mk2s in a local dealer and cherrypicked the best one, it's as good as my Mk1 was.

As for gross front focussing, the camera only has to be a smidgen out to make the lens look terrible at F1.8 and if the camera is any of the Rebel (x00D series) or any of the xxD series, they haven't the precision to AF the thing reliably constantly anyway - a really good 5D can do it on a good day but F1.8 really is the job for a 1 series
