Marina Bay - Singapore

You nailed the exposure. Color, focus, DR and Saturation are all
just gorgeous! Nice work.

As a matter of fact, I was. =)

Left Singapore almost 20 years ago. How time flies...

Hey L, really good to hear from someone from home (was anyway) from so far away... :) Do you come back for visits often?

Easter Friday in Singapore... Shot with D2Xs with 12-24mm lens at
about 7.30 in the evening. :)
I love the image; it is well, splendid ; )

My only nit here is that the horizon is more or less at the middle.... since the sky is a more universal element (its everywhere) I would crop a tad off of the top, since the image is about the Cityscape.

Cheers,

Hey Zane, thanks for the compliments.

As for the composition, I thought to post the image in its entire frame but I do have a couple of cropped versions stashed away.... Here's a square one, does it work for you? If you look closely, you should see that I've digitally removed the cranes on the building under construction on the extrme left and added more lights to brighten it up.

I try to visit once a year, but it's been two years since my last visit at this point.

We'll see...maybe at the end of this year, I'll be able to find time to go back. It is a beautiful city and so photogenic.

Thanks for your contribution Suchit! Thanks.

Question: Why did you choose to use F/22 for your image? Which lens did you used? I would have chosen a wider aperture for better image quality and a shorter exposure (lower noise).

Question: Why did you choose to use F/22 for your image?
This was I think the same day I bought the D200. I wanted to use a long shutter. Next time would use my Cokin filter and wider aperture.
Which lens did you used?
I used the 18-200 mm which I had bought along wtih the D200.

I now have Tokina 12-24 mm which I would love to use.
I would have chosen a wider aperture for better
image quality and a shorter exposure (lower noise).

Hmmmm......

I might crop even more off of the top... I noticed that you cropped the bottom a bit more too so that actually moves the horizon line back up...

With the tighter crop there is more 'visual tension' between the objects and the edge of the frame. There is also an interesting visual tension betwen the white tent pavilion and the Cityscape beyond. My eye bounces back and forth not quite knowing were to land; that creates a certain sense of energy/vibrancy as opposed to restfullness.

On Colored mats

The color in the mat will tend to emphasize what to look at in the image. The light blue mat is a nice color, but then I'm looking more at the blues in the image. Not necessarily bad, but perhaps its not emphasizing the image's strengths. It does work as a counterpoint to the warm toned bright lights.

This is hard to do verbally, so appologies in advance for a more "visual conversation". Here's another possibility to consider just for grins.

Consider where you want to have a viewer's eye land first. If I had to choose, I'd say that the Cityscape is the primary subject and the pavilion with the red light is the accent or seconday subject. So based on that, I'd start to select a mat color of the lavender-gray skyscrapers. Then the golden rule color is from the vibrant lights in the Cityscape. The pavilion has enough contrast and color punch to stand on its own. A Black final mat is more neutral and lets the brighter parts and the colors of the image come more forward if you will. Since the vibrant colors and lights really make the image, that seemed like a good thing to play up. Also, I think that the Cityscape is now more comfortably dominant (resolved maybe?)without diminishing the pavilion. See what you think:

Here is a rather BOLD version just for fun. The dark lavender mat really plays up the golden highlights (opposite colors) and yet is sympathetic to the lavender-gray pavilion's roof. Maybe to much : ) but interesting. That might work for a greeting card format/media. What do you think? Another Splendid Possibility? or a waste of perfectly good pixels?

Hey Zane, thanks for the advice. I really like the black frame you created. It actually draws my attention to the image more. Thanks again. :)

I've stopped using coloured filters for many years now cos the colours are a little to punchy for me. The only ones I use now are the Lee ND graduated filters.
