DIY Vagabond / power pack parts list

It was an 18ah battery, with 2x 800ws strobes. Never fired either at full power though.

Truth be told, I'm not 100% sure that the battery was fully charged as I've since gotten many more flashes in the studio while testing it out.

It is quite possible that the modeling light was the culprit, though. I left the one on my main at full power for a while near the end of the shoot. I estimated 45 min, but it is quite possible that it was longer.

Tnaks for the info. I have just recently received my 300w Samplex and have been reading this thread to figure out my battery and housing configuration.

I got the 600 watt sinewave inverter and all I do is use my jumper cables hooked up to either my car's battery (still hooked up to my car) or on my lawn tractor's battery (on a luggage dolly). Works great!
I ordered a 300 Watt pure sinewave inverter and for the same price
by mistake, they sent me a 600 Watt inverter instead. Is there a
disadvantage in using a 600 Watt besides it being larger? Does the
battery wear out faster?

This goes out to all of you who've built this thing. I've got all the parts, sans wires and connectors and have had a hell of a time trying to find them where I live. Could you please share the type of connector and the source you purchased it from? I'd appreciate the help immensely!

You list yourself as in the U.S. Try Radio Shack, Lowe's, Home Depot, any electrical/plumbing supply store. Some larger hardware stores will have them, as will some building supply stores. If you can't describe what you need, print some of the photos in this thread and show the guys at the store.

You ain't gonna find them at Target, WalMart, Macy's or Bloomingdale's.

I bought my Sanlex 300w but my project is still on hold.

What type of battery should I get to have something like 600 shots of AB400 at full power, without using modeling lights?

Someone has this type of info?

Thank you!

Ricardo

I am also wanting an answer to this question. I fear the answer is going to be a full size car battery.

A car battery is the worst type for this application. For one the acid can spill and create a real mess. Secondly a car battery is designed for short duration high amp situations. You would kill it after only a few uses.

I would suggest a Sealed Lead Acid preferably and AGM. A commmon size is a U1. The sime physical size as you use in a garden tractor battery. They are rated 12v and 35 to 50 ahr. No telling how many flashes you would get but I would think close to 600.

These are easy to find since they are used in wheelchairs and scooters.

Excellant information. I was going to go buy a deep dis-charge trolling motor battery today, but didn't get around to it. Thanks for saving me the time/money. Now I know what to look for.

Now all I need to know is if the "smart charger" I bought 3 years ago for the trolling motor that died from lack of attention will work correctly on the U1 battery you reccommended... The quest and questions continue.
