I sent the 5D packing!

I thought you had sent the 5D back ? - otherwise why are you using the present tense & not the past ?

I think you are getting a bit confused now, so let's go over the story again for you.....You had a 5D but sent it back, because the discriminating muggers you will be hob nobbing with will be able to tell a 5D from say a 300D, and will more likely have your 5D away.

You have no knowledge of camera insurance and think an on board camera flash is a worthwhile item. Of course it is as it will distinguish to the said muggers that you have a consumer DSLR.......not a pro one- I think I am getting in tune with your logic stream now, so its now time to buy an airline ticket for your travells, dont buy a BA one as they are the most likely European airline to loose your camera bag & that would be tragic after all this remorse & public soul searching. ....

--Yeah, no kidding! Who cares? Do you feel guilty? You should. (not you JV)

The 5D is a great camera, my favorite. It's sick to see someone creating open box specials on a whim. Nice troll thread.

-nothing beats a fast lense, except a fast girl-

Errr those big white ones and the ones with a juicy red line round
the end.

Ever seen em?

Otherwise what rubbish do you want me to put on the end of my 5D!?
Unlike the 30D which will happily accept any coke bottle lens :)

I applaud your having made an intelligent decision based on your own needs and a firsthand appraisal of the 5D's strengths and weaknesses. Best of luck with your photography and gear.

before anyone gets tooo excited---geezeez a troll big time----comment about the lens, they are just TOooooO Big with a 5d, but apparently small enough for a 30D---of course for all you people whose lens are toooo large and heavy with their 5d, the easy and obvious answer is a 30d to make them smaller and lighter!!!!

So quit whining about those heavy large lens and"lighten up"-err April fool's was a couple of days ago

If he's that intelligent, he would not have bought the 5D in the first place!

Sounds like an idiot to me! He's worried about getting "mugged" because he travels with it? Did he not know that before he bought it?

The battery only takes 300 shots?? It takes well over 1000 to even 2000 in some cases! It's too heavy?? Hello??

You say he's intelligent? He sounds like someone who buys stuff "just because" and then returns items which screws the camera stores because they now have a used 5D on their hands!

Jeesh, some people!

I suppose he could have rented a 5D, but maybe that's not an option where he lives. How else would you suggest he discover whether or not a 5D works for him? Reading about it on the internet?

I know two people who, in the last year, have had their expensive DSLRs stolen while traveling. For someone who travels a lot, I don't think it's an irrational concern. I'm not taking my 5D to Europe in the fall, but will pick up a more pedestrian Rebel XTi instead.

2000 in some cases! It's too heavy?? Hello??
On occasion I've only gotten as sittle as 700 shots with two fully charged batteries in the grip, and virtually no chimping. And I'm talking the battery being completely exhausted–the shutter won't fire. The next charge, I got more than a thousand with the battery still reading full when I charged the batteries anyway in preparation for a shoot the next day. So, I don't think it's impossible - or even unlikely - that he got only 300 shots from a fully charged battery. And I would expect more battery life, as well.
You say he's intelligent? He sounds like someone who buys stuff

In fact, I wrote that his decision was an intelligent one.

intelligent in?telij?nt adjective able to vary its state or action in response to varying situations, varying requirements, and past experience.

Thus, since the OP had firsthand experience with the camera and found it not suited to his particular requirements and situation, I do think his was an intelligent decision, even if you do not agree with it.
Jeesh, some people!
Indeed.

It was the Dynamic range which stunned me Juli - better than the Fuji S3 even ???? I think so, and I had an S3 for 6 months ! .. The Difference is that you need a top RAW converter like Capture one to release the DR from the 5D (C1 recovers highlights well from cams which are capable) the JPG engine doesn't have an "Auto DR" type setting and the JPGs while are very nice and usable are rather "300D-ish" (whaddya expect from a cam with a Print-share button just like Granny's Powershot,, LOL ;-) ..

Update the AF to the 1 series unit (even crippled) and weatherseal the thing (Viewfinder Dustseals would be an improvement ;-) and LEAVE THE SENSOR ALONE and that'd make a nice 5D-Mark2

feel for it, and then rejected it. (why are the focus points all
squished up there in the middle?)
Because it's a Full frame camera using an APS AF system..

All I said was that 'it's not for me' all all hell breaks loose!

And IS on a lens kills the battery - fact.

What a lot of very bored, closed minded people who can't see past their own noses. Just get over it - it's not the best camera for all people, all of the time, in all situations. Live with it.

I can.

Like the man said, I TRIED it, and it (albeit being a lovely tool) wasn't right for me - who gives a stuff about the shop? It's me that's paying, and I demand this service from the shop. And I'm not even a yank!

I thought you lot were all about the customer being right....people to scared/embarrassed to go back and exchange something, me thinks.

Performance related pay? Nah, pay related performance!

I bought it, I tried it, I don't like it.

So the shop can take back my unwanted, undamaged goods.

That was all.

....but it costs £2k. Also, and more importantly for travel
photography, it’s a muggers paradise. It, or should I say I, won't
last more than 20 minutes in the places that I want to visit.
And what places would that be? I just spent a week in some slummy areas in Egypt carrying both my 20D and 5D with those easily identifiable red ringed lens and I didn't get so much as a "hey lets mug this guy" look. You seriously think muggers discern between a 350D, 5D, or a 1D? Get real.

And what of those Photojournalists with 2 1D's going to a lot less friendlier places to deliver striking images from warzones and places we'd never imagine going to?
The battery life is terrible - approx 300 shots. The lenses weigh a
tonne (but are great) so that really limits the number you can
carry. No built in flash is a pain when travelling.
Start working out more. People love the 17-55mm 2.8 EF-S lens but some have complained over how non-sturdy it is. The 24-70 and 70-200's are built like tanks. I'd rather carry something around that I can bang around and not have to worry about it then to coddle a lens just because I wanted something lightweight.
Please Canon, give us a small, light, manual focus, long life
battery, full frame, huge finder, 35mm sensor. I don't need 'speed'
  • I need IQ, a big finder and staying power for those hard to reach
mains sockets.
You need this, other photographers have different needs. Why don't you just use (as you suggested in another post) a A1? Canon already has the dRebel series, it has everything you need except the full frame sensor.

As for battery life, start learning to carry extra batteries and recharging your batteries every night. You could of course use the battery grip, oh, but wait, that goes against your weight principle.

20 minutes..?

Mine's been lasting a lot longer in places: Washington, D.C., Baltimore in the US, and in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Poland (petty theft capital of the world!) Not necessarily the Vatican City secure environs, eh? An considering the fact that I also use these big white ugly (ugh!) lenses I should be a prime target... And no, I don't travel in an armored vehicle - just normal precautions (like always having the camera and the bag physically attached to my body while outside...) But of course YMMV - if your luck runs out, you'll get hit by a falling brick in a wooden church.

Huh? Battery life is much better than that and no serious camera I know of has ny usable amount of storage built in. Now, that would be a real pain having to deal only with a pre-set amount of storage!

The 5D may not be for you, but be rational about it...Buyers remorse..? The missus cacelling fun and games..?

Good god,

I knew the cost, I knew the weight, blah blah.

But who cares?! I tried it, and took it back.

Why does it even matter? Do you own a camera shop? Does this issue adversely affect you?

Do you test drive a car before buying ? That costs the same as a 5D - so why not?

Performance related pay? Nah, pay related performance!

Indeed it does go against my principles to carry more when I want to travel light.

It's easy to understand - and I'm glad you do.
