I sent the 5D packing!

But again,

reading reviews can help a lot - I do have read many many reviews for all sorts of cameras and lenses. But unless you get a feel for the camera in your hand - well - all the reviews count for nothing. You really need to have some experience with the beast to know if it's for keeping.

In addition, and I haven't posted that previously, the viewfinder was full of dust, dirt etc, and the lens back focused. For 2k? No thank you. (but remeber this is an aside point - I returned it for the first reasons stated earlier)

You seem to be forgetting that the more professional a piece of hardware is the more well built it usually becomes.

Would you be happy paying £2k and getting a lump of moulded plastic?

Plastic breaks, plastic melts, plastic is hard to machine, plastic is flexes, plastic looks rubbish.

It's simply not viable to make a precision engineered camera, make it hard wearing without some weight to it.

'i have 2 5d's and quite frankly i get a whole lot more than 300 shots out of one battery charge....also, when did muggers stop and look at which 35mm style dslr you are using before they decide to accost you? if you are traveling to unsavory places, it doesn't make a difference if you are carrying a d40 or a 1ds2, if a person is going to mug you , they are going to do it regardless of your dslr choice....the bottom line is the cost...you siad it yourself...this is what is called buyers remorse....just fess up to it and cut the rest of the bull...you felt quilty about spending that much money on the camera and are returning it....no need to be ashamed of it...or to make excuses on a public forum to feel better..
regards

I wouldn't trade my 5D for any of those reasons - it was carefully
researched prior to buying (courtesy of a lot of comments on this
forum) ... and I KNEW exactly what I was getting.
Ding!! Ding!! (take note on his comment and commit it to memory and practice).

How anyone can purchase a camera, boat, truck, airplane or anything for that matter, without knowing the most basic attributes regarding the purchase, is just not reasonable..

So now I have discovered that I can't justify the outlay, it goes
back.
Thats the REAL point - Outlay Justification and a perfectly valid one too , you'd have done better by writing "I tried the 5D and can't justify the outlay" than all that stuff about being mugged and popup flashes as you'd have had far less neg comments..

If you can't Justify it then that's just fine, I can't justify a new car or spending £1000 on a holiday (unless It's a working holiday shooting for a magazine and getting paid manifild the cost of course -- fat chance of that ;-).

Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist

My Work cam (the D2X) has an old EOS one on it (remember those webbing blue ones) and the 300D has the spare one I got with the Oly E1 .. LOL ..

As for Justification - I could easily justify a 5D, the D2X as wonderfully sharp, accurate, fast and lagfree as it is (and I NEED all that for a lot of my Job), is noisy as hell at ISO800 and above in RAW.. I'd have a better thing to stick my 28-135IS, 50mm MK2 and 24mm F1.8 on ;-) too. the last one I tried was actually very good at focussing. amazing as the two I tried when I had the 1DS were a total liability in anything but stellar light when used with fast glass ..... and you know me for running two systems ;-)

I love the 5D and is the most used camera. Though I have a lot more clicks on my 1DIIN mainly because of the type of shooting that I use this camera for.

You got the camera and decided that you didn't like it, Didn't damage it and Returned it, No problem with that.

I just purchased a 5D this weekend - I already own a 30D.

A shock I know this will be to some, but the 5D is going back to
the shop. Why?

It's simple: It's a great camera, really nice bright viewfinder,
the images are superb, wide is now wide etc....

....but it costs £2k. Also, and more importantly for travel
photography, it’s a muggers paradise. It, or should I say I, won't
last more than 20 minutes in the places that I want to visit.
Muggers in these places are a discriminating bunch, never giving a 30D a second look, but pouncing like a hawk at the first site of (pretty similar looking) 5D ;-)
The
battery life is terrible - approx 300 shots. The lenses weigh a
tonne (but are great) so that really limits the number you can
carry.
What special lenses does the 5D use (other than the few EF-S lenses for the 30D)?

Psychoanalysis now! What an amazing wealth of knowledge we have here on dpreview! ;-)

I'd feel guilt if I:

a) Didn't have the 'spare' cash and
b) Really really wanted to keep the purchase...

and as I didn't, well, that's that. And for all the reasons I listen above and below.

Again people - it's a great camera. It really is. But it doesn't suite me, now, with what I want to be doing. So I tried it, got a feel for it, and then rejected it. (why are the focus points all squished up there in the middle?)

It's what people do everyday around the world when they try and buy things. I just took mine home to try....is that what makes people feel 'uneasy'? I get the feeling that really niggles some people, eh?

Errr those big white ones and the ones with a juicy red line round the end.

Ever seen em?

Otherwise what rubbish do you want me to put on the end of my 5D!?

Performance related pay? Nah, pay related performance!

I have no idea 'who cares' - but then as that was my original post.....I assume everyone who's replied 'cares' in some way or another.

Or, like me, has a load of free time at work. ;-)

Then try a cheaper camera. If you still get buyers remorse, send it back.
The lenses weigh a
tonne (but are great) so that really limits the number you can
carry.
Then try some smaller lenses. If they are still too heavy, or you suddenly discover they are too expensive, send them back.
No built in flash is a pain when travelling.
Then get a separate flash. If it's too heavy or expensive, send it back.
So in my specific circumstances, after all that wishing and wanting
and saving for a 5D, it turned out to be just 'too much', in every
respect, of a camera for travelling.
I hope you enjoyed the free rental.
Please Canon, give us a small, light, manual focus, long life
battery, full frame, huge finder, 35mm sensor. I don't need 'speed'
  • I need IQ, a big finder and staying power for those hard to reach
mains sockets.
I'm sure Canon are working day and night to get you what you want. After all, we live in a consumer society and you are the boss.
