I LOVE Sony, I have all sony Home theater (except speakers) and Sony CD Players, TV, alarm clock..etc..etc...

but... damn - i'm reading so many problem with this camera... and I've read a couple problems with the G2.. but they aren't very big and its starting to look like a better camera....

What should I do?????

Two different camera's. I have shot over 2000 pictures, no problmeo. Got to get to know you gear.

5x vs 3x

screw on filters vs lens extension adapter for filters
5 meg vs 4 meg
on and on.

Try them both out, see what your needs are then make a decision. Either one is an AWESOME camera. I just need low light to no light focus and 5x zoom with screw on filters. Everything else is a perk to me.. ;-)

Good luck

I just passed the 9,000th shot of my F707... I don't find problem (they are not important to me)... I am satisfied and others also like my pictures too.

I just read the post about the red/green in the corners.... and everyone replied saying they has the same thing - I don't want that.. especially from a higher end camera... I want a nice clean shot..

All I want a camera for is really to take pictures of my car, other cars, some pics of my girl, maybe some scenary pics .. but thats all.

I also don't want to buy a camera and have to ship it to Sony to let some dumbasses throw my camera around and damage it.

sigh.... I read a lot about the camera's.. I've been reading about both for about a month, decided on the 707... but the only thing I didn't like about the pictures was that the red's were too excessive... but photoshop will fix that -- but I don't want to have to adjust every picture... hmmm --

Give me some other opinions :D

I just want the best for my money - Thanks for the replies..

There are lots of things to love about the Sony F707 and the G2 has some nice features as well. I especially like the Halogram Focus of the F707. low light abilities. 5 Power Zoom of the Zeiss lens, low noise, 5 Megapixel images and I even get a kick from the unlimited MPEG Movie Mode with audio. There is more I like as well but most importantly I have not had the problems some others have described such as dark left side, vignetting, bfs or any of the others. I guess I am lucky but I can assure you the F707 has thus far been a jewel of a camera for me.

I sure do like the colors from the G2. I like the swivel lens. I like the fact that it is more compact alot. I would not mind the CF storage but I can be OK with the MS too. I think the Canon G2 is a great little camera and if I had not opted for the F707 first, the G2 may have been my next choice.

I can not tell you what you should do because you might use your camera differently than I do. Maybe you are happy putting accessory lenses on the G2 to get a little more focal length or zoom. If you have not had the benefit of the low light focus of the 707 then you will not likely miss it. The extra pixels may not matter and you may not care to use the movie mode or what ever. You need to know that not all F707's have the so called problems. Those of us who are fortunate enough to not have them love taking pictures with them. I am serious though. That G2 takes some real nice pictures as I have seen in many galleries. Good luck in your decision. Keep it fun!

Just a short while ago, I had the same dilemma. I'll give you three guess as to which one I picked, and the first two don't count. ;)

I think the answer you will get from EVERYONE is: it depends. It depends on what you want to take pictures of. It depends on how patient you are. It depends on how you take pictures. It just depends.

Myself; I chose the Sony over the Canon because of fast startup time, quick focusing speed, incredible zoom, a normal size lens (for filters like infra red filters), dedicated external buttons, a more SLR like manual focus, and last but not least, incredible pictures. After examining samples from both cameras for weeks, I noticed that the Sony F707 was simply better. Phil notes in his review that the Canon produces “jaggies” on diagonal lines that make them appear more like steps. Read the reviews, if you haven’t already. Look at the pictures, too, and good luck with your decision!

P.S.- The saturated reds are actually a bonus in my opinion. Every picture I take has awesome color.

I know how you feel I very nearly didn't buy a 707 because of the negative threads in this forum, but the G2 just didn't stack up to the 707 specs. I took the plunge and after 2 months wait got my 707 just before Christmas. Boy am I glad I stuck with my first choice, I have seen none of the problems mentioned except the levebs (blue tinge in manual flash at higher shutter speeds) and had to look pretty hard to see it when testing for it. I have never encountered it in my everyday use of the camera. I know I made the right choice for me and am very happy with that choice.

Hi

I agree with Shay - I've had a 707 for a couple of months now and can't fault it. Great colours, quick starts, etc.

Read the Canon forum, all cameras have design quirks, but the 707 is great!

If you can, try both. I know what you'll pick.

Good luck

Sure did you read "everyone" having the same thing. The majority with flawlessly working F707s (like me) don´t complain.

ddd75 -

I'm perhaps one of the biggest fans of the F707 here, with a few exceptions. :)

That said, I'm going to give you what some will consider strange advice: Get the G2.

Why?

From your post, you seem concerned more about problems than about what the cameras have to offer. Each camera has problems. I'm not so sure that the G2 has LESS problems per se, but the F707 problems have certainly propelled a lot of discussion here. Much of that discussion is VERY, VERY repetitive. Like an individual who dwells on one problem so much in his head that it seems like he has six problems, those of the F707 may be somewhat exaggerated.

The point is that any camera has its own unique set of facial pimples. What sort of balm or salve or cream you put on those is your choice, but it's far better to find a workaround to the problem at hand that actually works. Most F707 users have been able to do that and are producing very nice and vividly colored images.

To do yourself justice, I hope that you've posted the same question in the Canon Forum. You've probably noted that every individual in this thread so far has been very kind, offered good advice and has not had a single bad thing to say about the G2. Try doing that in the Canon forum. See what response you get.

Finally, each forum offeres its own set of Challenges, an opportunity for the respective users to post some of their most creative work from their cameras.

Look at some samples from each gallery. Decide which "look" in images you like best, and go with your instinct, whichever that may be.

You should buy the Sony 707. You are going to have some bad apples in anything you buy but Sony is on the cutting edge of technology and they will take care of you if a problem should arise. I know from experience. Not with the 707 but a Laptop. You can not beat Sony"s service and that is what you need to keep in mind when buying anything! And no, I do not work for Sony! Good luck Al

the G2 does not auto focus as well as the 707. and on comparable portrait shots that are in focus the 707 will be sharper and more detailed.

I would not make this decision based on any of the reliability issues discussed on these forums. Both cameras are good enough in practice. The question I would ask is what style of camera you want. Do you want something that's somewhat compact, uses an optical tunnel viewfinder, and has a twist/swivel LCD when you want to see what the lens sees? Or do you want something a bit bigger, more like an SLR, with an electronic viewfinder and bigger lens that has more reach? If you actually try using both cameras in a shop, you'll soon find yourself gravitating towards one or the other.--Peter Epstein

Wait until after the PMA show. If you think you're having trouble making a selection, wait and see what new cameras come out. If Sony makes any changes, I hope that they don't change the lensing system. It's second to none from my experiences.

I’m sure you could live with either one. They both take wonderful pictures and they both have their problems. The main reason that I don’t buy a Sony is that you can’t shoot in RAW format. RAW gives you the option of setting the white balance, saturation, brightness and sharpness after you have taken the shot. In other words, you get a digital negative. By shooting in jpg, you rely on the camera to do the settings for you and you can’t change it in the same way as if you had had the RAW file (the original negative). At the same time jpg is a compression format that gives you a loss and therefore is not suitable for editing. If you don’t plan to work on any of your shots, shooting in jpg is fine. If you are a little more serious, go for a camera that can shoot RAW format.

Both are great cameras and both have there own problems but keep in mind one thing the G2 has a lot of focus issues thats why I got the 707.--Steven

Most of the fun with digital is photoshop !
