After much debate I ordered one - darn thing is Small! No grip. I am still learning, but I would preferred to have gotten an XTi - I know I said I would never buy one. Heck too much to read on the G7 - learning slowly - will get up early tomorrow (Sat) & out to shoot some stuff before I got to work. Darn lens pokes out in the way if you use the viewfinder(I knew that about G series cameras).
Basically, if I get a 400D - it's like this for me:
Put on the neckstrap
Put in the Battery & CF card
Set camera to my colours - go to Landscape mode
Set camera to TV Mode - ISO 100

Attach a lens & then I'm ready to Hit the Road shooting. Atr least that is about all I did with my 300D & my 30D. The rest was a great learning experience for me! The 30D Totally rocks - especially with the 24-105L!

I just picked one up too, I'm so lost . I'm kind of embarrassed to ask for help.

Hi David

Congrats and many beautifull pics I wish you.

The G7 is a lovely addition to the 30D, keep them both and you will have a winning combo.

Regards

Siegfried

I got mine from B&H for $450.95 using this code: PSJAN07061

I also got a Impact (2nd)Battery for $27.95 & 2-day UPS. I already had a Sandisk 2GB & a 1GB Ultra II SD cards that I picked up at Staples last November when they ran them on sale.

Saturday morning I plan on going out & spending some time shooting around the area to see what I can get it to do - I also read some of the manual after I got home from work. I will either figure out how to use this camera, or it's going back!

Spent about a hour out shooting today - everything in TV Mode, ISO 80 - images looked great - BUT . . . there is a smudge on the lens that won't go away! And I Definately NEED to get the neckstrap put on it.

It is easy to get a fingerprint on the lens as the little plastic door leaves separate easily when handling it. Use a microfiber cloth gently on the smudge. Do not use fluid cleaners, as it will remove the lens coating.

5D and G7
Happy together.

I find the "LensPen" works great. It has a retractable soft brush at one end (for blowing and removing dust) and a capped flared 'tip' (just under the size of a dime) at the other. The cap has some sort of substance in it which replenishes the "tip" whenever replacing the cap.

I generally blow on the lens first, removing any loose dust and then lightly brush the lens. I then use the tip to remove any smudges. Works great!

Got the fingerprint off - Many thanks to all. The "Jury is still out" on this camera. I mean, there are things that my 30D (& 300D) will do that the G7 won't do. A LOT of settings to use on the G7 - MUCH easier to set something on my 30D & leave it & not constantly having to change stuff & then check it on the LCD - which is very hard to see on a Bright sunny day.
Just not quite sure on the G7.

Take heart...the G7 is really an A series.

Absolutely. Lose the G7 and get yourself another lens for your 30D. You won't regret it.

I put on a wrist strap - not neck strap - on my G7. It's just big enough to easily fit over my wrist and it really helps with one-handed shooting. The strap is tight enough that it goes under tension and really helps with the lack of grip. i am quite pleased.

Jim,

I'm wondering - Mac or PC? tooth paste or gel? blonds or brunettes?

I haven't been on the board in weeks. When I left, you were bashing the G7, and my first post read upon returning - here's Jim, bashing the G7 and mocking out a nice board member's home made grip.

Man, it's a camera - it takes pictures. Alot of people like it because it's a really portable that takes good images. And if they (not Jim) decide it isn't for them, they can return it.

Now, you need to accept that it's either OK that it works for lots of people, or you need to start educating us masses in everything else that's Jimmy approved.

Dave - there's a square button on back surface, to right of optical viewfinder I think. Push it to turn on display without having to turn on camera and extend lens.

With regard to the complexity of camera - it can work fine in idiot mode - or you can start taking advantage of extra features if and when you need them.

My daughter has==had!! a super wrist strap that came with her little Fuji 400 or something, it is very strong and has a slide bit on it that you can lock into your wrist. I have searched all over the net but cannot find it to buy. Maybe buy the Fuji and keep the strap then return Fuji---shop might not notice, its worth trying to find one as its surely is ace.

Just to clarify, it's the 'Play' button. And you have to hold it down for a second or two for the view images function.

I recommend P mode. You can leave everything on default, which is like Auto mode, but you can reduce EC to -1/3. The G7 has a tendency to blow highlights on the default setting.

Thanks,

I use a wrist strap on my G7, too. My G7's neck strap is still shrink wrapped.

I started out with the Op/Tech Cam strap

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=221925&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

But then I switched to use an Op/Tech medium Hipster

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=387590&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

which is just large enough for the camera. (I want to carry the camera in my coat pocket, but wanted a case that is just large enough to protect the G7. Space is a premium.) The Cam strap was too large to fit in the Hipster. So I then got this Nikon wrist strap

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=304031&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

It might not look like it by comparing the images, but the Nikon strap is a lot smaller than the Op/Tech strap. The Nikon strap can be easily tucked inside the cover of the Hipster.

If I wasn't using the Hipster and cramming it into my coat picket, I'd switch back to the Cam strap. It is larger and feels more secure. The Cam strap has a quick disconnect. I think that this neck strap uses the same quick disconnect.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=283&A=details&Q=&sku=221958&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

So if you got both the Cam strap and this neck strap, you could quickly switch between neck strap and wrist strap by using the quick disconnect.

These are all so cheap that I'd recommend that you get one of each and try them yourself.
