Pentax 16-50mm lens up for pre-order

Thanks, Leya. Adorama is $150 less. B&H will drop their price once someone checks what the competition is doing.

The lens won't be available until late in May, possibly early June.

They may not need to drop their price.

If they know supplies are going to be tight, they can sell all their first shipment (or more, possibly) at full blow while Adorama sells theirs for almost no profit (though the folks who get theirs for $750 will be happy).
If the supplies loosen up, they can lower the price with no ill effects...

The same thing happened with the K10. Before it was released, the prices were in many cases lower than they are now because nobody knew if it would be a "hot" item.

Even now B&H is selling the K10 kit right at $999 for the kit (though they throw in a 2GB card) because they can...

I’m looking forward to pick up a second hand 16-45 on the cheep.

Common people, buy that new lens!! I need a useless, old, banged up, no good piece of glass.

B&H is charging full MSRP for the DA* 16-50mm. Heck, Adorama is asking $830 on pre-orders its pre-orders of the DA* 50-135mm.

I pre-ordered the 16-50mm, but , geez, I'm so tempted by the 50-135mm. Having both would cover up to 90% of your shooting needs.

Sorry, if this spoils your plan, but I don't have the DA16-45mm to
sell. However, my 18-55mm kit can be had for a song. :-D
That is OK Rob! There will be plenty of other people who will sell their 16-45 lenses.

Why would I bother with the kit lens, when I’ll be able to get a very nice used 16-45 for about CND $200 by the end of August?

Actually a brand new Pentax 16-45 lens sells for CDN $377 at Camera Canada right now. If my memory serves me correctly, this same lens at the same store, just a few months ago sold for about 450 CDN. So the pressure is already on.

It's amazing what effect new product has on other prices. Adorama has the DA 16-45mm for US $299 after Pentax' $100 rebate which is roughly comparable to the Canadian price.

I can't really consider the DA* 16-50mm & DA 16-45mm as in the same market segment. It's amazing how much more you have to pay to get just one stop (I know, I know, there's more to the DA* series than just the larger aperture).

Name the song, Robert, and I'll sing it. I have a K10d body and would love to have a kit lens. Email me? Thanks.

I think that is optimistic. There are enough people out there looking for a cheap upgrade from the kit lens to keep the prices close to the market price for new 16-45s. Seems like there have been reports of shortages on these lenses. Could potentially make them sell higher than new if people get disparate enough.

While I agree about new products influencing the price of the old, the impetus for the $100 rebate (instead of $50 like the rest in that price range) is more likely due to the Sigma 17-70, which goes for about $390US. By most accounts it is optically equal, with greater range and macro ability. The Pentax 17-70 that showed up on the roadmap (as well as the 70-300) seems to indicate that Pentax is not fond of its middle-tier optics being dominated by third parties.

Any mention of the speed of the 17-70 from Pentax?

I would love for it to be f:2.8 - 4.0.... :)))

And razor sharp, with true "Pentax" colours, naturally! :)))
