Another weekend, another Italian Carnival

Evening All!

I spent a long weekend last week in Viareggio, the proud host of Italy's largest street carnival. It couldn't be more of a contrast to Venice: if the latter is the Upper East Side then Viareggio is Coney Island and their carnivals reflect those differences. Venice is stately and grand with slow-moving people in gorgeous costumes, whereas Viareggio favours a brasher style. But it does have some of the largest carnival floats in the world and more of a party atmosphere, even if it did eventually rain (very very heavily!) on the parade.

This is just a fun set of shots, nothing to get excited about. If you have a minute or two to flick through, please let me know which you like and which you don't!

Excellent eye Tim! Superb lens work!

SIGNATURE: This is a picture I did not take of a tall, greying man with crooked teeth whom I've encountered three times while photographing downtown, and each time, he's approached me quickly from the front, with a long stride, and each time he's leaned toward me and said the exact same thing 'Old One's Are Better' while palming his ancient brass Leica, opening his hand enough to show me what's there, but not enough really showing-off!' (An Unknown Leica Street Photographer)

That was a fun look. While I can't point to any that I don't like, if they weren't presented as a series some stand on their own better than others (I hope I'm making sense to you). The ones I like the most are:

Eyes Left
The Cycle I

Freud Illustrated (I particularly like that you left the frame of the woman in the background and didn't crop it out)
Hells Angel

In Zermatt I didn't figure out the whole saturation thing until you said something. Here I caught on the the yellow orange and red theme right away before getting to the balloons.

Next trip???

Raining here too but none of those carnival colours or Tuscan sunshine to compensate, so it was good to see them in your pictures. I particularly enjoyed The Cycles 1 and 2 and Eyes left and most of all I like the ones I voted for in the challenge, now called Freud Illustrated and Bed Time 1.

I agree with Terry about the Freudian pic which takes the eye from the head to the mind to what's on his mind. Anyway, that's how I see it.

Thanks for saying that Terry, because it is intended as a series rather than a set of individual shots.

It was a very tough shoot, with often appalling weather (most of the parade shots were just blobs of rain caught in the light) and nothing very carnivally going on other than at night - and I hate flash!

You have a very considerate eye for what other people are doing and it's much appreciated!

Hi Tim
They look like old friends already.
wonderful stuff - I love the beginning and the end - and most of the middle too.

Well Done!

best wishes

Hello stranger, was wondering where you went.

Ok so here are the one's I liked:

The one with the surfboard shaped shelving in the shop window on right and dog coming up the street on left, with view down same street. I like the shapes and the friendly feeling the dog gives me and I like the perspective of the view looking down the street.

The beach shot, I like the colors and the perspective.

The pic of the young girl in a skelot costume as she hangs just foward of a railing. I like her expression.

Nice to have you back Tim.

Tim - Sorry about my first post that is no.3 in this thread, I started writing it about an hour ago but was interupted and posted it just now. It seems to have bumped all the others, but it was not intentional as that's bad manors.

He Peter, and thanks for your comments. It is uncanny but with one addition, the three you have chosen are three of my personal four favourites, though I didn't expect anyone else to like them. Take another look at the one with the dog - in the shop window. It's a carnival shot, really!

Best

Hi Tim,

What a marvelous series and, as you said, what a contrast from Venice. What I see in this group of pictures is a creep into minimalism, that I like, but haven't seen as much in you other work. Good stuff. I wont try to pick a favorite...

Hi Tim,

Let's see, in the shop window is perhaps a reflection of a colored party costume that someone near you is wearing.

I still like the dog and the perspective view looking from the shop corner to way down into the lingering crowd on the street in the distance. Inviting.

Oh Cr*p correct spelling is such a nuisance! I should have paid attention in school insted of thinking. It's like how civilization has said-music is to be played in certain keys and with certain notes. Disonace is also inspirational.

I also like the sex and drugs and painted devil person on the wall, but that's because you guessed it... I like sex and drugs. So I like it because of the subject. Is that allowed? Oh the days gone by...

But for the same reasons I like the cyclist pedalling away from your vantage point and embarking down the street. It has a feeling of the passage of time of a good and long life. So this would be my no. 4 pick.

Oh, PS I liked the candle photo as I see an image of a party woman or a madona. The colors say she is at your party!

Huge Mr.Bull looking at us is wonderfull and I like his ear ring.

many memorable photographs that you've shown us

I am partial to Hell's Angel, Freud Illustrated (with the female figure slyly included in the background ...great eye!) and Wet Nurse with its wonderful movements

I also have to mention Last Year's News as a fine political commentary ...knocking off noses seems a universal way of showing disapproval
thanks for sharing this fine series
