A bit smaller, simpler, and hopefully cheaper(!)

yeah, sign me up. something that competes directly with the RD1s perhaps. still expensive, though... i'm looking for a $1k m-compatbile body. hahaha. yeah...

of course, is the CL not the model that is rumored that leica themselves killed becuase it was under cutting sales of the M? so... i would think they learned their lesson already. plus, i'm guessing, it was no small mericle to put all that digital hardware in the same size case as previous m's.

alas, it's dslr land for me, i'm afraid. till i win that lottery! or, those prices actually start to make film look cost-effective, in a sense, don't they?

I think a CL type could be just the thing to give them an entry level RF - maybe even get Panasonic to make the body - it shouldn't really hurt them as Leica seem happy to sell re-badged Panasonics which cant really help their overall standing as a brand par excellence... but I suppose it helps pay the bills and give them cash flow to keep the M series alive.

I share your feeling that the current rage for the plastic DSLR is crushing the serious digicam off the market. It looks like the Canon G7 is about as good as it gets outside of the Ricoh GR-D.

I've recently been forced back to a compact (Sony V1 ) and the quietness and ability to hand hold at slow shutter speeds is a revelation after using a DSLR for last 18 months.

If I remember well, the Leica CL was in fact made by Minolta, and had specific lenses (40 and 90 mm) that were not interoperable with the M serie.. Anyway, it was a pretty good introduction to the realm of rangefinder, but Leica has removed it from its catalogue a long time ago. I think that the main cost being the processor, a digital Leica CL with the same processor as the M8 would not be that much less expensive than the M8.

I'd rather vote that Leica can bring an updated version of its wonderful digilux 2 instead of the new digilux 3 which is a dslr.

Anything to keep some quality compact options open for serious users...DSLRs can be as cheap as a compact - in fact the cheaper the noisier they are likely to be...

The 40mm and 90mm work fine with M Leicas, with minor viewfinder lack of precision with the 40mm.
Not all M-series lenses worked with the CL (BTL light meter arm).

Buying a CL led me to buying an M3 and a couple lenses, Leitz made money off of me they wouldn't have without the CL.

well, after an unfortuneate accident with my pentax, i actually re-discovered film, and rangefinders though that. started with a cheap 1970's olyumpus XA. loved it. have since nabbed a contax t2 and konica hexar (af, NOT the real RF). if someone made a digital konica hexar AF, i'd buy it in a second. SILENT. sharp lens. affordable. just all around pleasant.

at the very least, yes, perhaps the M8 will spawn a few m-mount digital cameras, or a new range of digital rangefinder options. one can hope.

With a 1" sensor instead of 1:1.8" ......

here here!

i'd actually LOVE to have a CM digital. i had a dslr, then lost it, then started shooting film (kinda a blessing in disguise? well, that's the only way i can look at it). i like these fixed lens rangefinders. have a hexar, t2 and xa. small compact, quiet (well, maybe not the t2).

so, here's my vote. digital CM! please! that lens is excellent. some kind of fixed lens that would match the elmarit 40's angle of view and bokah with an aps-C (that's right, an aps-c in a P&S - SOMEONE has to figure out that would be a good idea, i'm sure leica could). i just don't get the feeling i get panasonic based cams that the CM provides.

if they could do this, i think i would choose this over another dslr.

thoughts?

Looking at the way compact digicams are being styled (Canon G7 anyone?) i think there's real business to be had in remaking these classic designs.

We just need a private benefactor, possibly, rather than a typical MBA. Does a hard head and eccentricity go hand in hand? What chance private wealth is attached to those character traits?

Agreed. A CL-sized rangefinder with exchangable lenses has been my dream scenario of a camera ever since the digital era shot off.

A surprise that noone has developed this kind of camera yet.

A 4/3 or APS-C sensor in a compact body like this would be just great.

I keep saying Canon will make one and soon, with lenses. Also at an affordable price. Is there anyone here who would object to this?

Artist Eyes

They're fond of several aspect ratios in their cameras but they are usually 16:9 and 4:3 and 3:2.

So how about adding one for the entire world that uses the ISO A papers?

In terms of a 5 megapixel camera of (say) 2592 by 1944 we'd get 2592 by 1824 or so. Not much different but means I save a lot of paper and the trimmer gets to go rusty...

Regards, David

PS And an "H" button for the hyperfocal distance to be set.
