First serious attempt at night shots...

The foreground is rather plain/uninteresting (lots of dark areas with a few bright lights). The skyline (the taller buildings) looks like it should have been the Center of Interest, but it is too small for that. You would be better off zooming into the skyline, showing less foreground and making the skyline more prominent. Also, you would better resolve the detail in the skyline. The sky had pretty colors and it does enhance the shots - make sure there is enough of it in the shot, but not too much.

There are planes in the shot that are on landing approach to the Ft. Lauderdale airport. Perhaps that's what you're see, particularly on the upper left side of the shot.

If you've never been to Ft. Lauderdale, the foreground is made up of multi-million $ homes!. Ft. Lauderdale, at least in the areas around the intercoastal waterways is known as "America's Venice". I was trying to get the reflected sky in the waterways. Guess it didn't work very well!!

That may be, but dark, multi-million & homes look just any other dark and featureless elements in the night shots you showed. I could not see the houses - or the reflection of the sky - in the foreground, that is why I suggested emphasizing the skyline instead.

Rafael,

I understood your comments, thanks! The reflection wouldn't have been in the foreground, it would have been in the "canals", or waterways between the homes. By the way, I saw on your website that you have pictures of Lansdale. I'm in Bucks County. Are you from that area?

I like the first one most because there is some detail in it. The other images lack detail because theyr are too wide.

In my night photography I almost always shoot with shutter speed priority (S) at 200 ISO and with a tripod during the "blue hours" (just after sunset that is).

The second shot is the best. One problem though, I looked at the large version on flickr and you appear to have a) some dust (dont we all!) and b) are you sure all those red dots are planes? I've never seen them that randomly all over an image - they look like hot pixels or some other error. Or are my eyes going funny? Anyone else think similar?

...or close to it (Harleysville/Kulpsville). I go into Bucks county quite a bit, on bike rides. Peddlers' Village for the Christmas lights; Doylestown because it is a neat town.

It looks to me those red dots are always right on top of buildings.

Yes, the red lights are on top of the buildings. The airport is relatively close to downtown Ft. Lauderdale. I've seen them on the top of 8-9 story buildings along the coastline. I guess that's because there are so many small planes that fly along the coastline day & night.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I will take your suggestions seriously and try to get better. Hopefully, you'll see improvement in the next set of night shots I post for C&C!

If you look at the larger versions of the image, you can see red and blue dots spread all over the image. They look like hot pixels, but there are so many of them! I would be very concerned if this came out of my camera.
