Goodbye Canon Talk :-(

thx treaks ,that was very useful ... unfortunately Oly wouldnt let the reviewer post photos yet but still, there are some very impressive features explained not least the sample shot showing the full zoom range from 28mm-504mm...... and of course RAW.

Naturally no camera is perfect and there is an issue with a 3.5 sec start-up time and shutter priority not having the full shutter range. There may also be an issue with the EVF (which the reviewer mentioned would be confirmed in the final review).

Nevertheless, I still cant get over how small the thing is with all its features ... its even lighter than the S3IS despite the 18x zoom and 230k 2.5 inch screen. Personally i think its beautifully designed and prettier than the S3.

At the end of the day we have to wait for IQ reviews before knowing its real worth ... having said that, Oly IQ isnt at all bad so fingers crossed as this could be my next camera .... unless of course canon wake-up and smell the coffee first with the S5 IS.... roll on spring!

Saying its double IS is misleading (I actually got that from their press release) ... Oly are playing the marketing game a la samsung and the like ... still .. it has optical IS which is what counts and good for them for putting it in.

In terms of specs alone (we have yet to see IQ reviews) this camera is undoubtedly a breakthrough.

(Prediction: 80% of all P&S cameras by spring 2008 will have optical built-in IS).

That camera is a thing of beauty! Yummy!

Unless Canon or someone else comes out with something as compelling, and if the image quality is good, I'm buying!

I won't be saying bye to the Canon Talk Forum because I'll still have my SD700. My S2 and 5400 will be sold and this camera will be their replacement. But I will begin visiting the Olympus Talk forum to learn more about Olympus digital cameras (I owned and loved a 35mm OM2n and would still have it if it didn't die and parts were unavailable)

btw, I do love the swivel LCD but I'd give it up for the wide angle to long telephoto!

lol gail ... what a coincidence ... my first serious foray into photography was with an OM-2n, which I also had to let go of .... by selling it when still a poor uni student! What a great camera that was!

IQ permitting, looks like Oly may just have gained its 2nd convert ... see you on the Oly forum :-)

are really nice.

As a user who has variety of brand of cameras (yes, I use Canon also - see profile), the SP series of cameras aren't bad at all. The nice thing about it is the image quality that you can generate with these cameras and they all have RAW capabilities (are you listening Canon). The RAW files can be superb. Now the ISO 5000 schtick...well, I doubt it would be a nice file, but I'm betting that at least up to ISO 800 may be ideal - we'll just have to wait and see. Using the SP-350 (8 MP) series as an example, I took these in RAW and converted with ACR. I'm telling you folks, if you close your eyes to other brands, you will surely miss out. I love my Canon stuff, but I also keep my mind open to other brands:

The following images were shot with the SP-350 (8 MP - 1/1.8" CCD) shot at ISO 50 - 100, AWB, RAW - converted with ACR. The photos in which flash was used incorporated the use of the Oly FL-36 external flash in bounce mode:

Have a great day!

Yuk, I just realized the 550 uses xD cards. I will have to hold my nose real hard on this one if I decide to get the camera. Hopefully Canon will be coming out with a killer camera too.

I loved it! I had a full system. I sold it and got a Canon Rebel...which was traded in later for my Nikon 5400. It was a fabulous camera but I don't miss 35mm at all.

Yup, see you around asking questions at the OTF.

As I understand it, from what I have read here, optical IS detects movement at the lens end whereas CCD shift detects movement at the sensor end. Expert opinion seems to be divided as to which is better, but the difference in performance between good quality optical/CCD is small.

Ricoh use CCD shift method which I think was pioneered by Minolta.

Best regards, swnw.

A 28mm lens, manual controls and IS in a relatively compact body. A larger sensor would be nice. f/2.8-4.5 is not bad.

Given reasonable picture quality, sign me up!

I dont know what you mean by a full system but I had the 50mm f1.4, 28mm f/2 (expensive birthday present from my brother), the 135mm f/2.8 (all Zuiko lenses) and that incredible Oly flash (forgot its model number but allowed the at the time revolutionary TTL metering).

All sold off the Charing Cross Road London for a measly sum but was desperate for the money :-)

Couldn't have put it better myself Gail.

Happily give up the LCD for everything else that's on offer.

I also have a Fuji F10 so XD card doesn't bother me too much.

Can't wait to see the IQ.

Have you all seen the specs on the new Olympus SP-550 UZ?!

Absolutely incredible!
Absolutely ludicous,more so.
18x zoom (28mm-504mm in 35mm terms)
Ever stopped to wonder how crappy such a lens will be? There are, and always will be, physical limitations to what a lens cdan do. Give it a little bit f everything and it's good for nothing.
Jpeg & Raw!
No prob, that's software.
Double (yes double) Image stabilization
Come on, that's marketting. How can "double" IS exist? It means two different modes.Else it wuold make no sense at all.
ISO sensitivity 50-5000
No DSLR offers ISO 5000. What do you exxpect from such a small sensor ?
2.5 inch 230pixel LCD screen
Nothing new.
Not useful. 3 MP is more than enough for most users.
365g weight (without battery)
ok
$500 tag price!!!!!
ok again.
Is this the most perfect travel camera ever made or what?
This is a stupid listing of crippling features. If such lenses were an good, Canon and Nikon would sell them for their DSLRs, at the price of a car. And get buyers. I'm guessing the high ISO is only available at lower res, which means it's not high ISO, it's downsampling. xD cards have the highest failure rate in the market. And Olympus's IS is yet unproven.

You have to learn to think beynd the spec sheet. Consider what influence a specific parameter has on the rest of the camera. And wonder why no one made a 18X zoom before (it takes about 20 minutes with a free lens design software to draw the first iteration of such a lens, it'sno big deal.Making it GOOD and worth anything is another story).
Assuming the pic quality is good Im sorry to say Olympus just won
their first convert!
Good for you. Meanwhile I'll be using my 12X lens, knowing it's quite the limit of such a design.

The front looks absolutely amazing, but the back of it looks really ugly I must say. And the lack of buttons makes me wonder if it will be the usual unlogical awkward menu-digging.....wow how I hated my old C-765, it was a pain to handle (though it took nice pictures).
