Have you all seen the specs on the new Olympus SP-550 UZ?!

Absolutely incredible!

18x zoom (28mm-504mm in 35mm terms)
Jpeg & Raw!
Double (yes double) Image stabilization
ISO sensitivity 50-5000
2.5 inch 230pixel LCD screen
7.1mp
365g weight (without battery)
$500 tag price!!!!!

Is this the most perfect travel camera ever made or what?

Assuming the pic quality is good Im sorry to say Olympus just won their first convert!

Here that Canon, RAW...

That just means optical and digital image stabilization. You can boost ISO with 'normal' IS cameras also. But I have to agree, it's good that they finally added IS.

Probably ISO400 is just okay and the rest are only usable at 4x6".
2.5 inch 230pixel LCD screen

I truly hope that Olympus has made right decisions with that lens and image processing. That 1/2.5" sensor can't do miracles but if everything else is good stuff then it has a chance to be a real seller.

Yes saotupp, right about the IS as well as the ISO 400 prediction however still definitely a strong contender.

i was just thinking about it and Olympus really seems to be the trendsetting innovator of the times with the E-400 (smallest dslr in the world) and now this....they deserve better market share and would probably get it if they improved IQ and noise ... although as far as we know maybe they have with this model.

You know what saotupp ... Id have paid 50% more than the asking price for the sp-550 if it had a larger sensor (i.e. G7 size) and a hotshoe ... and assuming the IQ / noise tests are good. What about you?

I'm not looking for a ultra zoom camera so I wouldn't buy this camera for me. But those who are looking for a camera like this, it's good news. Price is okay I think, with 499€ you get a lot. If the image quality is good I think it will sell really well. For now on the paper it's a bomb no question about it. With bigger sensor and a hotshoe I could see it being sold around 599-699€ but there's always compromises. There aren't many cameras that have bigger sensor than that 1/2.5" and also have 10-12x zoom.

Lets have a look at the image quality first shall we?

And also, I dont know if I could live with a camera that only does 1.2fps, and only up to 7 frames. No matter how good the rest of the camera might turn out to be, that burst performance really really blows.

You and many more if they could do that and keep the same size package.

I thought almost all new advanced zoom-cameras had it...its very useful indeed. Strange decision if they excluded it....maybe for price-reasons or something.

Maybe no issue for people that never used one, but as soon as you had such a camera for just a few days you really dont want to leave it.

Your comments about burst rate and swivel screen are very valid if you are used to using these 2 features ... i personally do not.

At the very least, Olympus just upped the stakes and Im more keen now to see canons response with the much anticipated S5 IS.

An increadibly impressing camera on the paper. I think Canon is shaking now. They will really have to offer a lot on their S4 is they want it a big seller. This goes true also for Sony and Panasonic.

The battle among compact and longzoom cameras is not only still going on but has accelerated! Good news for the custumers.

Other Cams impressive on the paper has been the recent Pentax compacts etc.

I have seen a lot of great camera specs when first introduced but the picture quality wasn't very good.Mostly too much noise.I will reserve judgement until I see some reviews.

Well, I'm going to order this, can't wait for the reviews - if they turn out positive, I want to be able to use this thing instead of sit around and wait for the shops to get stocked.

Was going to upgrade my S1 with an S3, but for this kind of zoom I'm willing to sell even my sweet sweet swivel screen.

With their SP-510, they are referring to ISO boost and fast shutter speed as 'digital image stabilization'. So adding optical stabilization here is a really good move. But I don't think I would refer to this as having 'double' IS as one poster did.
