c2100 vs. c700

I love to take landscape photo and surely if i had enough money i would buy a G2, the image quality of any 2.1 mp is not even close this quality. but that will have to wait :)

Pro90 is too big but the G2 is a nice size.
Thanks for all the great responses. I'm sorry about bringing up
this topic again...I should have searched before asking the
question!

It sounds like the c2100 will be my best bet, but I have one more
question: Are there any cameras on the horizon that would be worth
considering? I have a few months before I must get a camera, so
atleast a little bit of time is on my side. Any idea if a camera
with atleast a 10x zoom and maybe 3 megapixels might come out
before now and summer?

Thanks again.

Yes the Sony 707 is very tempting, once you get pass the wierd design...:)

surely a Sony 707 with a teleconverter would beat up any 2.1mp 10x zoom in quality.
You can get the camera now and enjoy shooting with it and if
something comes along in the future you can EBay it and get most,
if not all of your money back.
I wouldn't be too sure about that. The Uzi is popular now at $500
because most other cameras in the same class still cost a lot more.
What happens to the Uzi's value when say, a $999 F707 has been
displaced by a new model and can also be had at that price?

At max optical zoom, the F707 is roughly equal to the Uzi at 304mm
after accounting for its extra pixels. And closer in, it takes the
lead in
terms of putting pixels on the subject.

There are probably other models that the same will happen to. Each
new one
will be more competition for the Uzi in the used camera market and
will likely
drive its price down further.

Not so !,

Put the teleconverter on the UZI too and the Sony still doesn't quite beat the UZI. And just like the C700 , you would definitely have to use a tripod. On the UZI I handhold it at full zoom with a B300 screwed on. Can't do that on the Sony or the 700 .JD

Nah! The G2 is a nice camera but Phil only gave it a 8.5 rating for image quality. Its got a puny 110 mm zoom. A typical camera for a ladies pocketbook. I'd go for the Fuji .JD

Daniella paid $1000.00 to remove 1/2 lb from her bike's weight and spent $700.00 on a 1/2 lb c700 to carry on her bike rides.

If she bought a C2100 she would have had to spend $2,000.00 to compensate for weight. I think she is pretty smart! JD
and i don't think any c700 owner do...but i am not fat, so i care
about the weight i carry when hiking. some people i know spent $$$
just to remove 1/2 pound out of their mountain bike...and they are
VERY athletic people.
Whoops... story change. You once said that YOU paid about $1000 to
remove 1/2 pound from YOUR mountain bike.

Hi Daniella,

My sister has a C2040 and loves it although it is 40mm-120mm, not 28mm wide. Still, the 1.8 bright lens is very nice :> )

Hello everyone, I am trying to decide what camera to buy, and I
need some advice. I am going on a trip to Alaska, and I want to
get a good digital camera with a nice zoom so that I can take some
good pictures of the wildlife. The 10x zoom on the c700 caught my
attention, but the 2.1 megapixels scared me because I'm not sure if
that is good quality.

While inquiring about the c700, others suggested that I take a look
at the c2100. It has been discontinued, but I found it for
$500...which is cheaper than the c700. Both have the same zoom and
same amout of megapixels.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Good idea for any digicam. Even the C700 UZ model can go dead. Actually they are prone to have loads of dead or hot pixels.JD

i did not paid 700$ for the c700 but 435$ shipping included.

if you would do any mountain bike you might talk like someone who know something about that sport..but you don't :)))

expensive bike are the lighter, and the more light they are and the more expensive they are...that goes for the backpacking equipement too. So it depend where are your priority.

If i would have bought a c2100 i would have paid 169$ more to get the extended warranty for SDS...because i would be really worry about this!

Shoot, I am sorry. I could have sworn the 3030 was 28mm. I goofed, I just looked it up in my manual and it is 32. Sorry. It is better than 36 though:)
The 3030 is 28mm, I have one and love it, takes great pictures.
Thank you, Dwight !
I had been fooled by the information at this page :
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Olympus/
P.S. I don't understand, I find the same (32mm) at
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/C33/C33A.HTM
P.P.S Are you sure, Dwight ?
here Phil confirms 32mm :
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympusc3030z/
And Megapixel says the same.
Too bad, I would have loved 3 megapixels and 28mm for scenic pics.
I am trying a C3000 borrowed from a friend, I will see how it
works. Obviously it does not fit in my pocket as used to do the
D460Z.
Why don't they build 3 megapixels/28mm/pocket size cameras -just
for 2.1 or 1.5 mp/38mm/Uzi/E100RS users complement their long nose
cameras ?
Thanks anyway
Michel.

No, not saying that. By then it would be a whole different story:)
Oh, ok.. I thought you were saying to buy now, and if something good
is announced at PMA (that might not hit the shelves until
June/July) to
keep shooting with it, and then sell when the new model is out.

"Never mind".

Actually I read a report on that..It said that the 700 has really bad CA also...Let me find it here... Here it is, right here in the same report that said the JamCam is the best digital camera.
Never heard of this happening to a c700...have you?

Yet another bit of misinformation- like your 2100 wide angle vignetting comments - not true- there is no wide angle vignetting (unless you add a teleconverter and that happens with most cameras).

Sorry Daniella- I've never gotten into these frays and this is certainly not meant to be a personal attack since I do believe both cameras are good (chacun a son gout) but you really do tend to give erroneous information- not to mention keep repeating the same things over and over again.

The earliest models of the C2100 had SDS problems and it has been dealt with by Olympus. They have repaired (or replaced) all cameras that had this problem and apparantly made corrections in later manufacturing. I have heard of this problem only a couple of times in the last six months or so.

I'm curious- might be worth starting another thread- since there are so many of us who have bought the 2100- how many have actually had SDS?
I haven't

Two of my friends who have this camera haven't.--Olympus 3O4O and Olympus 21OOUZ http://www.pbase.com/ro2001

I'm glad to see others calling her on this little habit of hers. This happened on the other 700 vs. 2100 thread so she maxxed it out and killed it since the tide was going against her.

I've got two of them and there's about 9 of my co-workers who have 2100s and no one has reported ANY problems. One guy got a defective one which would focus properly out of the box but the replacement has been working flawlessly. One thing about Daniella, she likes to exaggerate. If ONE 2100 has a particular problem, she lays it out like all or most of them do. She also likes to exaggerate GOOD things about the 700. I told John D1 on Sunday that, since Dennis Daugherty posted on that day that he'd gotten a handheld shot at 1/4 with the 700, she'd soon claim that some or most people can do that. She did it on Tuesday.

Just out of curiosity, since you have the same two cameras that I do, have you been using your 3040 much since getting the 2100?

No worries, Dwight, Michel just had a heart attack, felt down and broke the E100RS and one leg, and I (his wife) am typping the answer from the hospital web café ;=)
No, really, Dwight, no problem, and thank you for the help.
Michel.

The more it comes, the more I think this will end with 3 or more different cameras to be happy everywhere and everytime. It's like motorbikes : you can't drive the highway with the trial bike and will not climb the rocks with the chopper or the sports bike. When my back still had vertebra, I had as much as 4 bikes.
I will start another thread about this pocketable-wide-[cheap] camera question.
Thanks for your kind replies !
Michel.

I've seen/heard very little of SDS recently. With all the $499 Uzis
flying off the shelves recently you'd think we'd have heard a lot
more people talking about it if it were still an issue. Did anyone ever
collect serial numbers off units that had SDS? My guess is it was a particular
batch, or units produced before a certain date that had the defective part.
