I scouted around again after work for something to keep my G7 busy. As I was framing my shot of this overpass, a cyclist came into view and as usual, my reflex was to press the shutter button.
Great shot! I love the colors and the symmetry. So do you spend a lot of time finding great photo opportunities like this after work or do you just stumble upon them?
Thank you Siegfried, and thank you for displaying my pano views of SF Bay on your site.
lingxiang, the settings are as follows: manual mode, F3.5, 1/8 sec., saturation -1, contrast -1, sharpen -2. Manual wb using a coffee filter. I ordered a GretagMacbeth ColorChecker White Balance card. I'll compare it to the coffee filter when I get it.
I then use Picasa saturation and sharpen for pp. Thank you.
I am new at all of thie, what do you mean by "Manual wb using a coffee filter. ".
Thanks
EM
PS Great Picture as Always!!

New to Photography asking your patience. Looking forward to learning,
I use a coffee paper filter wrapped around a piece of cardboard for custom wb. I tried different materials for wb under different lighting conditions and I found that the coffee paper filter worked very well.
I agree with pkeleher regarding the cyclist. I'm impressed that the cyclist isn't totally silhouetted against the backlit sky which still would have been a great shot.
The timing was just perfect so that the overhead bridge light emphasized some color to his clothing.
Well done...........

EM, I'm by no mean an expert but I learn two things that are absolutely important, white balance and exposure. There're a lot to learn and experiment with photography. I'm more into planning and execution of a shot; and for that, the G7 is a great tool for me.
White Balance : "Most light sources are not 100% pure white but have a certain "color temperature", expressed in Kelvin. For instance, the midday sunlight will be much closer to white than the more yellow early morning or late afternoon sunlight."
the G7 is set at auto white balance by default (function menu, first option on top), in difficult lighting situation, it is better to use a custom white balance as it will remove unvanted color cast in the photo.
Look for G7 specific information on page 42 of the advanced manual.
