With the offer from B&H of US$1299.00 for the body I think I will pull the trigger and finally get the D200. Question is - with the AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR out of stock, what would be a good lense to go with this camera.

I currently have a Quantaray 70-300 1:4 5.6D NF AF and a 28-80 that I got with my Nikon N70... should I stick to those while the 18-200 is back in stock?

Currently my order with B&H looks like this... I accept comments/suggestions of anything I should change:

1. Sandisk - 4GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card with Extreme FireWire Reader Bundle-$ 319.95
2. Nikon - Capture NX Software-$ 129.95
3. Lowepro - DryZone 200 Backpack (Gray with Black Trim)-$ 234.95

4. Nikon - MB-D200 Multi-Power Battery Pack for Nikon D200 Digital Camera-$ 169.95
5. Nikon - AN-D200 Neck Strap for Nikon D200-$ 19.95
6. Nikon – (2) EN-EL3e Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery-$ 89.90
7. Nikon - D200, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera (Camera Body)
B&H #PSNOV06015-$ 1,299.95

Thank you in advanced for your comments!!

first DSLR?

my D200 runs a battery down right as i start to fill my 4GB card so i think 1 spare battery will be plenty unless you have 10+ GB of CF cards.

i would reccomend using trial versions of both capture NX and capture one from phase one before paying for one. i chose the phase one software over the nikon software.

the camera comes with a neckstrap.

personally, i hate the grip, but some people love it.

go ahead and get started with the lenses you have. an ultrawide is all your missing. if ou get a wide zoom, you will basically have everything covered and might never need to buy the 18-200.

first DSLR?
Yes, first DSLR... all we have had in the past are the normal point an click digital cameras. I have been looking into buying a D200 for some time now. Currently have a Nikon FM, Nikon FG, and a Nikon N70 and wanted to go digital with a Nikon as well

Thank you!

Call all your local camera shops - im sure one or two might have this lens for under 800.00
Currently my order with B&H looks like this... I accept
comments/suggestions of anything I should change:

1. Sandisk - 4GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card with Extreme FireWire
Reader Bundle-$ 319.95
this is crazy. you dont need an extreme IV card. just get any 4gb card (for under 80) or even a 2gb compact flash (for under 20 after rebates)

Just get a $10 USB 2.0 compact flash reader.. I would say save and get a 2gb card and an 80gb wolverine multimedia backup drive from costco and get spare batteries for that.
2. Nikon - Capture NX Software-$ 129.95
While this is good, get Nikon Capture and upgrade to NX - both are under 50 in ebay - total
3. Lowepro - DryZone 200 Backpack (Gray with Black Trim)-$ 234.95
dont know, but seems kinda excess for a bag. just make sure you can easily tuck in 2bodies, a 10-20, a 18-200mm and a larger lens 70-200mm f2.8, a flash, a backup spare drive, and chargers and what not.
4. Nikon - MB-D200 Multi-Power Battery Pack for Nikon D200 Digital
Camera-$ 169.95
much cheaper in nwdirect.com
5. Nikon - AN-D200 Neck Strap for Nikon D200-$ 19.95
you get a strap with D200
6. Nikon – (2) EN-EL3e Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery-$ 89.90
7. Nikon - D200, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera (Camera Body)

use DXKA303DH for 70 off @ dreamhost

While this lens is not as great as the 17-55 and 28-70... this is on my D2X 95% of the time. Great walkaround lens.

I can get the 18-200 VR in about 2-3 weeks from a local dealer in NYC.

I placed the order for the Body and a Sandisk SAE4CF2GBR 2GB Extreme IV CompactFlash Card with Extreme FireWire Reader Bundle, and an additional 2G Sandisk type III card. I wanted the latest reader (it is backward compatible) to be able to read all versions.
I will search around now for better pricing on the other items.

Camera should be here Wednesday!!

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

I really don't think you should go crazy on this "first lens" thing. Just use what you already have, and if your needs change, purchase another that suits your needs.

I've never been a fan of the 18-200mm, I think there are plenty of better lenses out there. The one-lens-fits-all solution, in my opinion, is not the way to go if you want image quality. Many used MF lenses are only a fraction of the price and offer superior performance.

My first lens was the 60mm Micro. I used it for several years and I still use it today. For carrying around, I use the 28-70mm AF-S.

Looking forward to learning a lot from the folks here.
