Fuji's S2 is out!

Actually the D1x has fairly poor vertical resolution. Same as the D1h.

If resolution was important, the S2 would seem the better camera. If not, then the D1h.
If they don't do something, their D1x sales will take a beating.
The S2 seems to outspec it in resolution and works with AFS lenses.
The D1x always looked like a stop gap camera to me. I would not be
surprised to see it replaced.
If the S2 is really over $4,000, then it is not much cheaper than
the D1x and the D1x is a much much better body. The S2 might have a
slight edge in image quality and perhaps have better ISO 1600
performance, but I wouldn't be surprised if the D1x holds up great
against the Fuji as well. (The differences in the sensor sizing
etc. are pretty small.)

Only real tests on each camera will tell.

Manufacturers tend to move in lockstep as much as they compete. Seeing fuji cram 6MP (real ones not the meaningless 12 interpolated), goes a long way to convincing me that Canon will do the same: 6mp in 1.6x space. I don't think it is the best way to go, but I suspect it will be done. No worries aboiut stealing 1D sales with this kind of setup.

Let the oversampling begin...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I hope Canons new bodies are up to the task!

While I love the idea of bigger sensors to decrease noise, it is very possible in the 1.5 years that Canon released the D30 they have managed to keep the noise level the same with smaller pixels. The D60 may have the same performance at 800 and 1600 ISO as the D30 because of improvements in software, process, design and manufacturing.

This is only an announcement, it won't be available until July, a full 6 months from now.

It will be interesting to see if the new Canon will really be available at the end of March as some are speculating.

Somehow I doubt it, but if you downsample to 3mp you are likely to have an all around better jpg than the D30s. But at full res it will (most likely) be softer and noisier.

My concerns are not merely noise. To capture 66 lp/mm (the approx density of this sensor) on film you need a good lens on a good tripod. The majority of the time, those extra MP will just be chewing up extra storage.

I would much rather have a 1.3 factor 4.5 MP sensor any day of the week.

I am also curious if Canon will give the "improved" camera a better focus screen.

You also get a little more mindshare announcing early, but if you
announce too far in advance of shipping that can work against
you...I'm not a marketing expert though, so I don't know when it's
good to break this rule..
Also, maybe they were worried that the D60 debut would overshadow their announcement at the show, since Canon is a more established camera company. By announcing early, they get to have the spotlight for a few weeks.

Give Betty a call and get on the waiting list. She tells me that you can have one in April as they should be coming in by late March (according to her distributor overseas).

Lee,

I was speaking of the Fuji S2, Betty already has me on the list.

Not to mention that the camera has to get the image in good sharp focus for all those extra pixels to be worth something (hint hint hint).

I agree with Joo. Who cares about announcements? It doesn't "practically" mean anything. Fuji will realize absolutely no increased revenue due to the announcement. Canon will lose absolutely no sales loss due to Fuji announcing before them.

Let's look at this. The S2 is due out in July. Let's say Canon announces nothing until they can also supply machines. Let's say Canon remains mum until March 15. They make an announcement on March 15 in the morning, and cameras are available to be purchased on March 15 in the afternoon. In that scenario, what difference did it make that Fuji announced on January 30th, a full month and a half before Canon? The critical thing for Fuji would be to make sure people know what their plans are prior to availability of a competing product. So as long as they announce enough in advanace of March 15th (in this hypothetical example) so that people who are buying the D60 will know about the S2's pending availability, that's all that matters.

If the S2 were to be available next week, then it would matter whether Canon said anything or not because potential sales could be lost. But with July availability for the S2, who cares when Canon announces (as long as it's before then)?
Any other dates are meaningless. What does it matter if they
announce early if you can't get one in your hands any sooner.
It means something if the other camera is out before yours. Some
people will wait for your camera if it is really what they want
(right lens mount, or better imager, or better low light, or..),
but very few will wait for your camera if they don't really have
any idea what it is.

You also get a little more mindshare announcing early, but if you
announce too far in advance of shipping that can work against
you...I'm not a marketing expert though, so I don't know when it's

In this case I doubt Canon will move the announcment date up unless
Fuji starts shipping the S2.

I had an s1 for 6 months, the CCD and colors were great, but the N60

body was junk, the focus was so slow with NO focus points. I don't think the N80 is much better. When you pay over $2,000 for a camera you expect a professional body!

They need to get a N90s or F100 body for this thing !

That is why I changed to the D30, I got better focus and a verticle shutter. With a professional ergonomics.
