G7 owners ... do you miss the grip?

Im always impressed with you guys who have your own ideas on adding home made stuff to your cameras. However I also have a real problem understanding peoples problems with grips. Im a big bloke and have big hands but have no problem whatsoever holding the G7. Even when the 350D/Rebel xt came out reviews complained about the lack of space for hands...eh???? My only problem with that is my big nose pressing buttons when Im trying to take pictures!!

I just got my G7 (from B&H), and it contains a neck strap not a wrist strap. The "WS-700 Wrist Strap" that B&H says is in the box, isn't.

(FWW, my initial G7 impressions are positive. Compared to the cameras I know (S45, 300D, 20D), the G7 stacks up very well. Even though the AF lag is long (not surprisingly), its low light AF accuracy and ability blows my S45 away and compares favorably with my 20D. And might be better than my 300D. (Based on my initial trials.) If you judge it on what it is, rather than on what it is not, the G7 looks very good. As of right now, it looks like a keeper, but I only did one short test, thus far.)

So order a wrist strap, if you want one. One probably won't be in the box.

Only in as much I am always feeling like I am going to drop the
G7...so I have ordered a wrist strap and that will stop the fear of
dropping the little dickens.
I thought a wrist strap came with it. According to B&H's "Item
Includes" tab for the G7, a "WS-700 Wrist Strap" is included in the
box.

Or is this something that varies from region to region?

I have a G7 on order and I was planning on using a wrist strap. I
always used a wrist strap on my S45.

Where did you order a wrist strap that will fit the G7? I thought
that the G7 used non-standard half-size strap mounting brackets.

Just looking at it I know I wouldn't be too happy about the grip. It's one thing I changed quickly on the G1, I purchased the add-on grip from LensMate so it was easier to hold. I'm just too accustomed to a DSLR grip, plus my first digicam (Epson 850z) had a nice big grip - similar to the S2 I use now.

The only thing I don't like about my compact cameras is that they
don't really have grips on them, and I guess because I use my 20D
so much, the smaller, grip-less cameras seem a bit lacking. Do
you miss it on the G7?
Hiya Willa. I don't miss the grip.

Actually, not having the grip kinda swung me over the edge. I'm one of the "thin-is-in" folks. That being said, I'm coming from an EOS slr, and an OLY--both with quite sizeable grips. The fact that I rarely ever had them on my body was really what sealed the deal. I wanted a slim brick, even if it didn't feel quite as secure as my eos. :) I guess I can see folks getting nervous...particularly if you've just finished putting lotion on your hands...or eating a Chipotle burrito.

About accidental button pressing...I'm not experiencing any accidental presses whatsoever. As far as my hand goes, there's' a sizeable spot on the back where I can slap my thumb, no problem--between the "play" button, the AE Lock Button, and the Delete button. And when I say no problem, I mean I can get fairly sloppy about it, and not have any accidentally pressed button. The ridge around the AE Lock button (the " " button) is what my thumb homes in on, and so long as I can feel that on the right side of my thumb, I'm golden. If I'm really sloppy, I can get the lower part of my thumb to press slightly on the focus/delete button, but to actually actuate the button, I have to make a concerted effort to roll my thumb down. It's totally a non-issue.

YMMV.

Oh...one more thing. If y'all are custom making grips, might I make one suggestion: Make one big enough to hold an extra battery, and an extra SD card. :)

Since I suppose it's relevant...My hand is a fairly run-of-the-mill men's size 8.

Fullu agree and that is what I suggested before:

Quote: It would be a welcome accessory if Canon would made a lightweight grip that looks like the (battery holder) one on the 640. May be they can make it so that a spare battery fits in that grip ! Canon....wake up call! unquote.

Especially when using the camera for long periods, parties or similar "shooting " occasions, a good grip is more than welcome. When using the camera only on an occasion while travelling then the grip can be left off if one wishes so.

The grip would make the camera look better and also it could then hold 2 batteries to increase shooting capacity. Also would add a vertical shutter release , which is a nice feature !

I can just see you skiing down a hill with a big camera in your
hand ... did the close up photo of the tree come out good, lol?

Again, thanks for your input.

Hehe

I missed one, two, thre trees, lol, and if only I didn't have flip screen it certainly will be true, so I always looking at threes, and camera is on my hand, front of me with flip screen, but one time, I didn't see the "relief" and jumped 30cm (not a big jump, but I'm not a good skier...), AND OFF COURSE, I wasn't prepared "at all", because I watching on the screen, with sunglasses to shot (manual focus, (or movie mode), if no, too slow for focus (sometimes for G5)...) and when I jumped, the GRIP saved my camera... and me, I just imagine what it will be if it was a G7, I'll certainly lost it, and have to wait for snow to go off and come back in summer for search the camera lol.

How to add a flip screen ? this will be a fine option, I found a way, I use my TV to shot (but the cable have to be plugged in tv), so I imagine, I can use a divx player ? who knows ? anybody tried, an external small LCD/OLED screen

Cerdan.

I have an S2 also ... (and quite a few other cameras ~ yeah I'm a camera junkie), and I think that it is one of the most comfortable cameras I've ever handled, so I guess it's just different strokes for different folks. With my tinier cameras, like my S80 or even my tinier SD800, I just always feel like I'm going to drop them. I guess I'm really 'ruined' by the fact that most of the time I'm lugging around my DSLR (20D).

Thanks so much for your input.

LOL!! I guess it just comes down to personal preference, which of course makes the most sense, but it's certainly something to consider. Especially is you're clumsy, hahah.

Oh, and about the Chipotle burrito: now I'm hungry ... again, you trouble maker!

Yeah, but it wouldn't be retro.

Canon should at least offer the grip for all the high end P&S cameras. That way, those that want the grip can have it and those that don't , they don't have to buy it. After all , it would give Canon one more thing to sell and make $$$$ from ... Wake up Canon !!!

May be there will be manufacturers of accessories who will produce these. Yesterday I went to my camera shop to buy a G7. Unfortunately the whole stock they received was sold! I am on the waiting list now.I asked if there were any add-on's for a better and more secure grip but none so far. That means I have to build one myself. Well, that keeps me off the street ;-))

Yeah, for an unpopular camera that overy other person seems to have something negative to say about, they sure do sell out fast. I've been to three camera shops since getting mine, and they all ran out of inventory.

I think the production is limited. I don't find it in such as Best Buy and Circuit City .. which do stock the S3 IS and 400D/XTi. Here is is only seen in camera shops and they have a very limited supply.

My camera shop, a rather old and reknown one received just 24 G7 cameras and they all went out of the door in no time. There are big stores around here where the G7 can still be bought. But what do these mega stores do sometimes?................On TV it was presented:..........

There were recently complaints about certain mega camera and HiFi shops selling USED and RETURNED products as NEW!( Cameras, TVs etc) That is the reason why I buy from a trusted shop. BTW- No hanky panky here. When I visited this shop yesterday a customer who just bought a Canon 640 was presented the camera fully packaged with a sealed strap around the cardboard case. The salesman cut the strap and unpacked the box to show the customer the contents and made time for instructions. On this site I also read about people buying cameras showing signs of previous use. That's why I prefer to wait until my shop has new stock.
