The only thing I don't like about my compact cameras is that they don't really have grips on them, and I guess because I use my 20D so much, the smaller, grip-less cameras seem a bit lacking. Do you miss it on the G7?
Just curious. I don't own the G7.

No I do not. The G7 is not hard to hold steady for me and I use the camera like a rangefinder, like my Leica M5.

Adding any larger grip would make the camera awkward. In fact I passed on the G5/6 because of the grip. But that's just me.

It's interesting to see all these posts re. the grip (or lack thereof) on the G7. I used Contax G-series cameras along with a variety of other rangefinders for years with 35mm film, and I never minded the lack of an SLR-like grip. My Fuji 6x9 rangefinder doesn't have much of a grip either, although it is much larger than a G7 (and much heavier). Perhaps it's never been a problem because my left hand cradles the left bottom corner of the camera and lens for manual focus operation?

Peter's comment re. the Leica M5 suggests that rangefinder users might have an easier time adapting to the handling of the G7.

I am VERY intrigued by the G7. I own a couple of DSLR's (10, 20D) and a few compact P&S's too. Depending on the camera of course, I suspect that sometimes a grip might be annoying. PCWheeler left me a good link to a thread regarding this subject.

Hi,

Personnally, YES, it's too small (not small as some other ultra compacts (CASIO...) but very small, and buttons everywhere, so you can't find a place (if such as me you have big fingers) to put on the camera...

I resolved the problem by buying a SIGMA FLASH DG500 SUPER ETTL and OPTICS (converter, tele & wide angle...), so the camera isn't so small, but it's not really a big problem, but the older G series was terrible with the grip, I remember skiing while filming and shooting other pearsons WITH ONE HAND and LOOKING FRONT OF ME (thanks flip screen), the GRIP & SCREEN saved my life and my camera on hard snow tracks...

But the G7 is an excellent camera, if you accept to "little downgrade quality at 100% pixel view"...

The grip, you should use both hands for have a really good grip... and your fingers will go on the screen, it's well built and protected so there will be no problems... the shutter button is also 50% smallest than older cameras, but after adaptation time, it's very good & pleasant camera to use.

It has not bothered me a bit. I just hold it and take pictures. So far I have not read a post about someone dropping their G7. I remember reading a lot about people dropping their G57&G6a also A610 and a few DSLRs were being dropped.

I can just see you skiing down a hill with a big camera in your hand ... did the close up photo of the tree come out good, lol?

Again, thanks for your input.

Regards,
;)

Well, I always use a wrist strap. I have to ... I fumble more than I care to admit to, lol.

Thanks so much for your input. I really do appreciate it.

There's a big difference between the space to grip the old 35mm rangefinders and the space on the button-filled small digitals of today. There's no comparison. See my response in the cited thread:

Only in as much I am always feeling like I am going to drop the G7...so I have ordered a wrist strap and that will stop the fear of dropping the little dickens. As for the buttons etc. they don't seem to get in my way, but then I have small hands for a guy.I love this little camera even though it can never(close but no cigar) replace my Pro1 that recently died.

Cheers

Very hard for me to handle, but my hands are a bit beat up (congenital form of arthritis). I have no problem with 20D nor S3 IS (both have wrap-around grips) .. and I use a "finger-thumb" approach with the smaller SD700IS.

The G7 defeats my right hand .. any way I try to hold it with comfort, my right thumb ends up on some rear button and bollixes up the shot. I like the camera, performance-wise, but the ergonomics have defeated me and my poorly articulated right thumb. I will return it. Maybe the A710IS would be a better option .. for me .. but that is too close to the S3 IS in most respects.

I will wait to see what come along next year .. and manage with SD700IS, S3 IS and 20D (17-85IS and 70-300 DO IS .. among others)

Well, I always use a wrist strap.
Me too, Willa .. Hakubas on my 300D, 20D, S3 IS .. and I even found one to fit my soon-to-be-forgotten G7.

Only way to go: I abhor neck straps.

I thought a wrist strap came with it. According to B&H's "Item Includes" tab for the G7, a "WS-700 Wrist Strap" is included in the box.

Or is this something that varies from region to region?

I have a G7 on order and I was planning on using a wrist strap. I always used a wrist strap on my S45.

Where did you order a wrist strap that will fit the G7? I thought that the G7 used non-standard half-size strap mounting brackets.

Mine is a Delkin. Fits perfectly. Found in a local camera store.

I'm returning the G7 (see msg in this thread) but keeping the wrist strap, since this new width seems to be a trend (of one!).

We could camera shop together ... and I hate neck straps too!

At least you gave the camera a good workout. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. As much as the G7 interests me, I have to be honest and say that the first thing I thought when I saw it was, "Oh ... no grip!". After all, ergonomics are extremely important, and of course even more so when someone suffers from something like arthritis. The 'slick' feeling of most of the compacts is exacerbated by the fact that there is no rubber materials whatsoever to keep hold of the camera with, which is why I HAVE to wear the wrist strap.

I'm going to be watching to see what you 'pick up' next, lol.
