Hi Brendan!

I got my 80-200 from an Ebay auction. Same with the FA* 300/2.8. Both were a little bit of a leap of faith, but their feedback scores were both very good.

BTW, if you are willing to pay $2097 (CDN funds - about $1855) for the FA* 80-200/2.8, I'll give you that information. It's a demo unit. That price alone is enough to scare most people away, and that Sigma isn't so bad after all.... 8-)

Cheers,
Marc

Just as an experiment, what I would like to see:

The Pentax FA*300/2.8 + Kenko Pz-AF 3X Teleplus Pro 300 to see if it would autofocus and to see IQ.

I have tried my Tamron 300/2.8 with the Kenko Pz-AF 3X Teleplus Pro 300 and the IQ was not bad at all. However, I had to manual focus.

Just my idle thoughts. :-)

Hi Ron,

Are you asking if I'll mount yours on my K10D with the FA* 300/2.8?

I didn't get the 2X-S auction - I bid too early and lost it... 8-(

I thought my FA*200 was big, but these beasts make my FA*200 look like a pancake lens :-)

Well i did get some looks yesterday when out shooting with the 200.

Includinh one guy asking why i still shot film. He saw the word pentax on the lens hood :-) and thought they didn't make digitals.... i told him to google K10D and K100D for starters.
WOW!!

That's an FBL (F#@$ing Big Lens) of the first order.

Congratulations on a magnificent lens acquisition!

Hi Ron,

Hi Marc,

Hehe... Actually I was thinking the other way around. Mounting your K10D and Pentax FA*300/2.8 on my 3X TC. :-)

I believe I have answered my own query though. I put my Kenko 3X on the longest autofocusing f2.8 lens that I have (FA135/2.8) and found that it hunts too much. So manual focusing with this 3X is much better with f2.8 and slower lenses. I will leave the autofocusing use of it with my faster lenses (FA85/1.4 and FA50/1.4).
I didn't get the 2X-S auction - I bid too early and lost it... 8-(
Sorry to hear that. Another one will come along some day.

Congratulations Marc, you know I watched that auction, and am so
happy there were no glitchs with that seller, and that your happy .
Look forward to your future shoots with it and if that combo don't
get ya some respect, at least your photos will (+: and already do,
in my book.
I'm picking up my Sig 135-400 today, but don't have the K10d yet,
so can't test it, and only have 5 days to make sure about copy
quality, wish there was a Pentax owners group here in Toronto.
Maybe time to start one.
Enjoy Marc, anyone as dedicated enough to get up at 4am to shot in
damp and chilly conditions, as you have, deserves to have the fine
tools to do it with. Enjoy Buddy

Thanks Jerry!

I was a little nervous, since you may have seen his reply to my question about it's condition in the auction. It's a mildly terrifying site with the FA* 300/2.8 and the K10D attached to the back. I'll have to buy a strap for carrying it!

I don't have the reach of Giorgos', Mark Dimo's or Chris Gunn's "monsters", but with a 1.7x TC on it, that's pretty good in my books. This lens gives me the perfect flexibility from 300-600mm with my TC's, so it's a sweet situation!

Glad to hear your "growing" your arsenal. Let us know how it goes?

I really appreciate the kind thoughts and hope to do this amazing piece of optical engineering and beauty some justice. Sometimes I still wonder about my sanity, getting up so early and it messing up my sleep cycle.

However, once I get there, all things are good and I revel in the beauty of it all. No regrets about being dedicated, that's for sure....8-)

Cheers,
Marc

Congrats Marc, beautiful lens and the sample pics look just dandy.

I'm was feeling rather pleased with my latest eBay purchase, an SMC-A 400 f5.6 (delivery due tomorrow) but your purchase (and Jim's 400 f2.8, thats a monster and a half) makes me rather envious. Looking forward to seeing some great outdoor shot.

Hey Brian,

Congrats on the purchase - should be awesome. Like I stated in my post to Jerry/tocarver, this was the lens I REALLY wanted for telephoto work.

I mean it's not the 600mm "monster", but with a 1.4/1.5/1.7/2.0x TC on it, that's pretty good in my books. This lens gives me the perfect flexibility from 300-600mm with that setup!

Cheers,
Marc

Good reasoning Marc.

I bought my Tamron SP 300/2.8 for the very same reasons. However, mine was just a tad cheaper I imagine. If I had a choice though, it would have been Pentax all the way for me. :-)

You lucky Bast* d !!!!! That is one beautiful piece of glass.
Can't wait to see some wildlife shots from you.

Congratulations.

Barely over the price of a new Sigma 300/2.8! - it was a very good price at $1700 under MSRP... 8-)
