That's an amazing image on two fronts.

Firstly it is super sharp showing how good the lens is and secondly the shake reduction works a treat!!

...but I sure would like to make the attempt. :-)

Congratulations.
LOL and thanks... BTW, I am keeping my eye on a certain TC... 8-)
If you mean the 1.4X-L, does it fit on the 300?

I forget.

cheers!

Hi Chris,

I looked at the element extension for the L series TC's, and how deeply recessed the rear element is within the FA* 300/2.8.

It looks like it can fit, but Dimitrov's site specified the L is for lenses over 300mm, and BH's site shows this:

The Pentax SMC-A 1.4x L Rear Converter (also known as a tele-extender) is desigend to fit on select Pentax 35mm "long" lenses. The converter will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 1.4x, and will cut back the amount of light by one f/stop. For example, using a 1.4x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 420mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/4.

Note: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (5 elements/5 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses. Only the following lenses are compatible:
  • SMC-A* 300mm f/2.8( )
  • SMC-A* 400mm f/2.8( )
  • SMC-A 500mm f/4.5
  • SMC-F* 600mm f/4( )
  • SMC-FA* 600mm f/4
  • SMC-A* 600mm f/5.6( )
  • SMC-P 1000mm f/8
  • SMC-A 1200mm f/8
  • SMC-F* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-FA* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-P 400-600mm f/8-12
  • SMC-F* 250-600mm f/5.6
  • SMC-A Macro 200mm f/4
So, it appears I must use the S series TC.... ?

Cheers,
Marc

You could. The 2x-S has great contrast.

However, a Tamron 1.4x or 2x would support AF.
  • I'd go for that!

How is the image IQ with the Tamron 2x? I thought the Pentax version had the best IQ for a 2x TC.

Thanks,
Marc

LOL...

Yes, serious FBL with BLING, category 1!

Now I have no excuse to not get closer shots of the Elk - and
that's just for starters... 8-)
I love those Elk shots!

Congratulations Marc, you know I watched that auction, and am so happy there were no glitchs with that seller, and that your happy . Look forward to your future shoots with it and if that combo don't get ya some respect, at least your photos will (+: and already do, in my book.

I'm picking up my Sig 135-400 today, but don't have the K10d yet, so can't test it, and only have 5 days to make sure about copy quality, wish there was a Pentax owners group here in Toronto. Maybe time to start one.

Enjoy Marc, anyone as dedicated enough to get up at 4am to shot in damp and chilly conditions, as you have, deserves to have the fine tools to do it with. Enjoy Buddy

Well, remember this is for APSC. I expect the Pentax has better
contrast, but that isn't as important on digital.
I used to have a 2x-S, and I now have a tamron 2x.
I haven't done a comparison.

Actually, did I once post my 2x-L was noticibly better than my 2x-S on
a Tamron 300/2.8? So long ago!

I may have had the impression the 2x-S was designed for 200mm and shorter. I forget.

I only use my Tamron 2x for pointless multi-converter pics :-}
  • Oh yes! And on my FA*200/4. Seems alright!

First of all congrats to Marc, the lens seems in brand new condition.

I would love to see a side by side shot of the 300mm f2.8 or chris's 400mm and a da 40mm pancake, it would show Pentax extremes really well.
