When should I buy the 30D?

I've definitely decided to go with the 30D. With it being the Christmas buying season and all, of course I get tempted to buy with all the colorful ads, deals, rebates, etc. However each Christmas that I have bought a Canon point and shoot camera - I own two now - Canon has introduced new models within a few months and or dropped the price on what I purchased. Annoying? Yes.

So here's my question for all you more "experienced" buyers and "in the know" types in the camera industry. Does Canon typically drop prices after Christmas on existing products? Do you think they are likely to make a price adjustment on the 30D in a few months? Or extend the present rebates? With the camera industry shows coming up, new competetive models from other mfgs., and all the buzz of a new Canon 40D model (we'll see) I am a little tempted to wait a few months. Being a fairly patient person I don't mind. But if they don't adjust prices and I miss out on a rebate I'll be ticked off.

Any feedback?

If it was me and I wasn't in a rush, I'd monitor prices up until the rebate nears the end and see what the deal is. $100 rebate (potentially doubled to $200) isn't something to sneeze at.

Of course, if you miss a couple months of photos (including the holidays) because you're waiting, maybe saving $50 a couple months from now might not seem worth it, nor that 40D or whatever you finally get around to in the fall when it comes out at full price, etc....

You should keep waiting - perhaps forever. There will always be something better and cheaper, right?

Does Canon make price adjustments as a practice after Christmas as a rule?

Do they typically extend rebates programs?

My experience with other electronics is that rebates are either extended or prices dropped shortly after the program expires. What I'm looking for here is what is Canons history in these programs?

Got it from B&H photo. price was 1.154.95 with a 100.00 rebate.

I've been watching the price for a few weeks and it's acually been going up a little at B&H, so i decided to get it now. I've had a 300d for several years and was ready for an upgrade. Can't wait. Happy holidays everyone.

Thanks for the code. I called b&h, and they let me have the code price. Saved 35.00. Thanks again.

For anyone else who may be interested in this camera, here is the code B&H # PSNOV06005. Enter the code in the search box and there you go.
Hope this might help someone else save a few more bucks.

Happy Holidays

i just tried the coupon code, it did find the 30D for $1,119.95,
however it doesn't mention a b&h mail-in rebate or $100...

if i don't use the coupon code, i found one with a price of $1154.95
with a mail-in rebate of $100 for a total of $1,054.95 before the
canon rebates...

any thoughts?

I bought mine at B&H $1169.00 3-4 months ago Theyre service is excellent!! The rebate is a canon rebate not a B&H rebate. I missed mine buy a couple weeks, but whats a $100 we sometimes waste that much on other junk. you will love the 30D!!!

all these things depreciate as soon as you walk out of the store...doesn't matter when you buy it.

i doubt it that it will drop in price (prechristmas or postchristmas sales), unless of course you have an inside word of a sale which will drop the 30d price.

I have a 10D and 20D as well as an old G3 and Pro 1. I bypassed the 30D as it wasn't enough of an upgrade to interest me. I too am waiting to see what the "40D" will have to offer and if it doesn't interest me, I plan to jump on a 30D really fast when the price first drops after the new issue, and before the 30D stock is depleted.

That's my plan for now anyhow. I"m well covered with cameras that do a good job for me, so I too am not in a hurry to jump just now.

I buy locally, and not at my camera store.
Do they typically extend rebates programs?
Not in my experience. The rebates run for quite a while, and once a couple of years ago, I bought a new lens about three days after the rebate was over. I was out of luck, as my camera store said to maintain their "authorized dealer status" they couldn't give me a pre-dated receipt. Another time I bought one a week before the rebate was announced and again, there was no "rebate debate" .
Busniess is business. I can understand this, even though I trade there a lot.

My experience stated above. Maybe someone else can chime in here ??

I think the rebates are from Canon - not B&H or dealers. You can usually find the rebates shown on the Canon website, or just go by a local dealer and pick one up. At my local camera store, they are on a tear off "thing" sitting on the counter by the Canon display.

you're right, thanks.

But even then I doubt it'll be significantly less than it is now with the $100/$200 rebate.

I would buy it now if you really want a DSLR. I was in your shoes last year with the 20D and I decided to wait until the first of the year. At the time, they were offering TRIPLE rebates on the 20D and I decided to pass on those thinking that the price would drop even lower once the 30D came out.

Anyway, I kicked myself for not buying the 20D during the triple rebate period. There's no guarantee that the "40D" is coming out in February and even if it does you'll be paying top price for it. The 30D is only going to drop so far. I say buy it now and start enjoying it. The double rebates right now are pretty good.
