M8 colors

Well I for one would very much like an answer to that question about the coding before I make a decision as to whether or not to send the M8 back until they get this resolved. I might be okay with buying a few filters, but NOT having to get all my lenses coded for it to work. Do you already have an M8 that you say you can get black velvet to look like black velvet with this filter? WITH an uncoded lens? Does anyone?? I've written B&H, where I bought the M8. Normally they only give you 7 days to return for a credit. Karen

I would agree with every word, hence i am a ex Leica user and i tend to think small companies or companies with limited resources don't work in the digital age.

The coding looks really simple, it should be able to do that with a white lacquer pen or something like that?

that statement from Leica says that for the filters to work, the
lenses must be coded! That's another added expense, and do I take
this to mean that if they are NOT coded (I have four not coded) the
filter will do nothing?? Why do they say the lenses must be coded?
That means the filter by itself is NOT any solution. K.
I really, really don't get that. Unless they expect their filter to
increase vignetting, so they need the vignetting correction of
their coding system, in addition to the IR blocking of the filters.
But that's just a wild guess, and not one I'm too confident in...
I remember now. It's been a few years.

The dichroic IR blocking filters block IR straight on, but they block both IR and visible red light from an angle. It's not a problem for normal or telephoto lenses, but it is a problem for wide angles. The center is neutral, the corners get a cyan cast.

I set up the Panorama Tools plugins in PhotoShop (16 bit versions from ePaper Press) so that I could apply a radial color correction. The correction had to be matched to the focal length of the lens, so I would sort images by focal length in iMatch, then have it run the proper PhotoShop action for each focal length.

The problem wasn't that severe, generally only a pain around 17mm or 20mm (which would be like 20mm or 24mm on the M8).

...at least Germany is still producing something, here in the U.S.
everything is made in China or elsewhere... -Norm
Except of course for the BMW's that the Germans build make in South Carolina.

Glad it works.

Like I said, I don't see any problems until somewhere in the range
of 20mm or 24mm on the M8. What lens were you shooting?
I should have read the rest of your post. The 50mm, and later a 35mm were fine. The 21mm started to show visible (but hardly objectionable, and easily fixed) cyan in the corners. Try installing the Panorama Tools filter plugins in your PhotoSHop. Get the 16 bit ones from ePaper Press. They're free, and it won't take long to tweak a correction for the 21mm, and save it as an action.

Could you directly link these so people don't need to register at yet another forum to see them?

My color issues were not only at the edges. In spite of every type of in camera correction the camera offers, red roses ranged from bright pink to a muddy orange/ brown. No just plain red. If I corrected for the red with photoshop, other colors were off. This particular light/ flower arrangement is something I have put each of my cameras through from time to time. Though they all miss using automatic functions, all were easily correctable in camera (D100, D2x, Digilux 2- which did exceptionally well- G3, G7, Elph, S70). This was with a 50/1.4 Summilux (unencoded) and all stops on a 28-35-50/f4 six bit Elmar. I sure don't want to buy expensive filters for each lens, now and future (they sure don't give away filters, do they?).

Hi There

I've been increasing the red hue in Lightroom buy about +10 - made my tomatoes tomatoey again without having an effect elsewhere.

Not the final answer perhaps, but it certainly does the trick.

kind regards
Got my M8 yesterday and have had some fun playing with it. I am
having difficulty reproducing deep reds (red roses are pink) even
when I exhaust my white balance options. Do I need a particular
temprature? This is more apparent on the monitor but is still a
bit soft on my computer. My D2 hits the mark with preset WB
without any difficulty. The images were correctable with CS but I
am concerned that I may have a problem. Thoughts?

Thanks. I'll give it a try while I await Leica's response. Meantime I am having an absolute blast using this thing in B&W. Somehow having to be more involved in the creative process as is necessary with any rangefinder but especially easy with this one is really making me feel more creative. I have been too long away from this format.

I'm sure you won't have any difficulty getting it right.
And in the meantime isn't it a blast!

Kind regards
