Challenge #15 - Voting Thread

Great images in both galleries. Voting was indeed tough...

Comments (my stand critque disclaimer applies):

Tea House: Somehow, the repeating geometry (rectangles) accentuated by the semi-silohette lighting really appeals to me. The cup of (sticks? pencils?) on the table make a nice counterpoint to the rectangles as does the OOF landscape in the background. The drop shadow frame doesn't do much for me, but doesn't detract.

For Vincent: A bit cliche, perhaps, but brilliantly executed. The layers of color work very well together. The balance in light and dark from the backlighting is near perfect. It's really a pleasure to gaze on this image and I like title, too.

Hopper: Nice color and composition. I found the similarity in "texture" between the cloud and seed heads a useful unifying element. This may not have worked as well with sky strongly OOF, so the small aperture seems well choosen. The hopper shape makes a great visual contrast, but everything stays tied together.

Other comments:

Shadow Spill - Great title which really explains the image. Maybe a bit overexposed; darker shadow and less blown sunlit area might help it a bit. Well spotted.

Glass Soldier - Excellent technically. I like the suble backlight, but I think it is a bit too subtle, even for me. In the end, the still life arrangement doesn't hold my interest enough.

serrated - i found the background rather distracting, but like the shapes, lighting, and composition.

back swing - Great minimalism and use of empty space. It might appeal to me more if it was a bit more abstract. I also think it might be a stronger image with a small change in perspective to put the sun behind the crossing red elements instead of the far edge.

Insight - Another great minimalistic work. I like the color and use of backlight in this one a lot. The shallow DOF works well, but seems lacking in sharpness. (Could be my crappy monitor, sorry if so.)

On the ledge - Very well done. I wish the tree wasn't behind the zebra, The image needs the tree in it and this is probably the best that could be done under the circumstances (on Safari?). But it's not quite there compositionally.

Moonshine - A brave effort and interesting image, but (to me) it seems to have some front lighting that's too dominant for this to quite fit the theme.

In the still of night - Another brave effort. For some reason, my eyes want to see more lit area in the foreground. The image seems a bit too cooped up with so much empty black space on both sides from top to bottom.

End of day - A lot to like here with the color, composition, shapes and details. The few things that held this one back from my vote are the bright light at lower center and a few elements such as the wire on the middle left that might best have been cloned out.

light hay - very creative and a lot of possibilites here. Lots of interesting things to look at and people relationships to ponder. The bright spots from the "pin-holes" in the barn siding detract quite a bit, however, especially in the lower half of the image. (They almost work in the upper half as sprites or pixie dust.) The bale of hay in the lower left doesn't work as the brightest object in the scene. It draws too much attention with too little interst value. The other comments this image has drawn regarding the 2 'normal' people spoiling the mood are quite valid as well. I think you could also go the other way, elminating the shadowy figure to turn this into a magical scene instead of a menacing one.

Good Listener - great idea. The reflections really hurt this one unfortunately.

The runner - Too much going on in the center. The runner and bright vertical reflection have great potential to balance each other, but not as postitioned.

My contenders in the exhibition gallery were:
Manandmachine
Caress
on the summit
Glasses
Arrival
Out of the fog
autumn
Where is my flight

Hi Mark!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I think the voting thread is a great place to do so and your detailed post is certainly appreciated by me :)

Cheers

Nothing like a little controversy in the final hours...ehhh? :->

Challenge:

5 points. Backlighting? I'm figuring that in some mysteriously metaphysical way it is...though I 'm not sure. It is a well seen, nicely executed, original and vividly captures a strong graphical image.

3 points. For Vincent. Nice BACKLIGHTING. Nice saturated highlights. Excellent transillumination and edge detail. Depending on the capture situation I would have like to see additional DOF.

1 point. On the Ledge. Last time I heard animals don't pose for pictures. So any quality capture should be noted and respected. I read Seans comments and blew this image up 400% and I'm not so sure there was camera movement. Maybe my old eyes need replacing. As there is no light visible on the tree or the Zebras it is an excellent examole of backlighting. The grass is lit perfectly and detail remains in the shadows of the ledge. Nicely done!

In no particular order I really liked:

Haylight: Killer image but withh too many distractions (people). Go back, if you can sometime, and reshoot this GEM of an image. Wow!

Glass Soldier: Nicely executed but just a bit more side lit than back lit. Nice concept and well done.

End of Day: Love this type of industrial photography. But subject a wee bit too shadowed. It's a keeper though.

Witchlight: Nice concept. Technically one of the best BL examples. With rehooting to eliminate distractions and tightening up the globe and some PP airbrushing this could be a keeper.

Exhibit.

5 Points. Glasses. Technically sound and on subject. Used to shoot imported crystal for a client years back and know how hard glass is to shoot cleanly. Very well done.

3 Point. A Small Glimpse of Infinity. Couldn't tell whether or not it was technically backlit but it sure did make me feel tiny and cold and insignicant. Must be a good picture. Beautifully done.

1 Point. Where is my Flight. Solid graphically composed image.

Really liked, in no particular order:
Abandoned..Wow!
Light After the Storm. Wonderfully rich and moody. Nice PP
Caress: One of the Best backlighting examples...needed more DOF.

Planer Saw: Nice industrial image...liked it very much but not sure of BL or side lighting.

Rereading this, I can see how people might have thought that I "discounted" or unfairly eliminated any shots that were silhouettes, which was not exactly what I intended to say. I find it VERY difficult to choose just three winners from each of the galleries for these challenges, and to put them in 1,2,3 order. And, as many have said many times when voting, I've also found that my choices might have been different on a different day - these votes are extremely subjective and everyone is going to react to different aspects and have different opinions which are totally legitimate even if we disagree with them. Some like shallow dof, some don't. Some like super sharp or super saturated images, others don't. Some like spiders and cats, others don't. Some are influenced by the titles, some aren't. As far as I'm concerned, this is supposed to be fun, and when it's not, that's when I'll stop participating.

So, no, I didn't eliminate any shots from consideration, but in trying to pick 3 "winners" out of fifty good to great shots, I gave preference to some over others. If you asked for my top ten from each gallery, you'd probably have several silhouettes in there. And, if you asked me next week, you might have a different selection (though Tea House has been top of my list since it was posted).

And in response to Tim, I'll explain why I chose these.
Vote using this template:

Main Challenge:

1. (5 points): Teahouse - Beautiful tones, great details, very inviting. It made we want to enter the scene and relax.

2. (3 points): Light Hay - I didn't find the people distracting, but rather mysterious, making me wonder what was going on. I liked the light coming in and how the hay and the people caught the light in a variety of ways.

3. (1 point): Homework - It struck me as unique and amusing - and made me wonder what they were thinking. I thought it had too much of the table in the foreground, but decided to vote for it anyway.

Exhibition Gallery:

1. (5 points): Old Lutheran Cemetery . . . I liked the colors, the detail, the seasonally appropriate theme.

2. (3 points): Glasses - I thought this was a really nice example of backlit glass - with crisp details, and nice capture of the light.

3. (1 point): Stare - This one just kept drawing me back. It was a bit more processed than I usually prefer, but arresting.

Challenge:

5p: Ghost (Which I really liked, especially the fuzzy finger)

3p: X-Ray-ted (Great picture, could have got 5 points as well but it lost when I threw a coin)
1p: Tea House (Just because I liked to look at it)

Close to get a point were "End of day" (but suffering from sharpening/JPG artefacts in a way prohibiting that) and "serrated" (very neat but not talking to my heart, and not really backlight, is it?)

Exhibition:

5: Out of the fog (despite the distrubing thing in the foreground)
3: Abandoned (just because)
1: Glasses (an achievement, well performed)

Close to get a point were "Light after the storm" (should have been a pano though, meaning I miss something to the left and the right),

"The Giant" (suffers from distorsion and also a lack of details), "lighthouse" (neat, but a little too conventional) and "Monumental" (mixed feelings, boring and cool at the same time, hey - that's not bad... :) ) and also "Caress" ( the DOF, sometimes it gets too shallow)

Thank you all! - including you who posted autumn leaves and fill flash pics and sunsets and all - it was a pleasure to wade through the pile of pictures.

yours,

Jonas

1. (5 points): Light after the storm
The light captured is really beautiful IMHO, and compensates the non-exceptional composition (+ OOF foreground!)
2. (3 points): Arrival
I like the message conveyed of...arrival, at the end of a journey. Nice composition and light also.
3. (1 point): Glasses
Beautiful interplay of light, dark, and transparency

Ghost

Very strong image, well composed and the smear of the index finger makes me wonder what happened and most of all who made the mark. Very strong!

2. (3 points):
Halloween light,

Very nice boundaries/frame made bij the arm and the face. Still has enough detail on the face without becoming a silhouette. Could have been my winner, but I have the feeling the focus is placed more on the nose than on the eye.

3. (1 point):
Tea House,

Like the lighting in this and the squares that are formed by the various lines. The pointy pencils add the necessary focuspoint to the photo. Well done!

Honorable mentions:
Insight & Light my flower

Exhibition Gallery:
1. (5 points):
On the summit,

Very good example of the photos I had in mind when seeing the challenge subject. Obviously also a challenge to make this photo, which was performed very well.

2. (3 points):
Dreams,

an image with a story just as I like them. Well composed but could have benefitted from some fill light on the back of the hair.
3. (1 point):
Monumental,

Normally I don't like cropping photos to different shapes than 3:2, but in this case it makes a very strong image. Nice approach to the theme!
