G7 Thoughts

what part of f2.0 do you need?.. you cannot say the G7 has a "slower" lens if the IS gives 4 fstops of additional usage...

oh wait...that would make the G7 3 stops faster than its predecessors :)

oh..and the G7 has more usable high ISO.. 2 stops?... 3 stops? :)

so, in conclusion the slower G7 is 5 EV stops faster than its predecessors...damn Canon!

I still like poking fun at how the G7 is getting picked on because
it doesn't have all that a DSLR has and isn't as tiny as other
cameras while people miss how rich the G7s feature set is.
No, the G7 gets picked on because it's not a real G SERIES....not that it isn't a DSLR. If you want to poke a little fun, fine...but at least know what the issue is.

XT, REAL G2, S410, F30

Its a G7 therefore it must be a G camera no matter what it's
feature set is. I don't see a label on the camera calling it a A7,
B7, D7, E7, and so on. It's a G7.
Do you see a swivel LCD? Do you see a 2.0 lens? Do you see RAW support? What? No to all of these? Then the only thing that's a G on the G7 is the label. It's an A series with a hot shoe...and a big price tag, of course.

Jim

How 'bout calling the "G" 7 "differently-abled?"
Not bad. Actually, "less-abled" is a good descriptor. Hey, I wonder how the people who forked out $600 like the fact that the price of the G7 is now dropping like a rock less than a week after it's introduction? Oh well.

You must have been one of those who spent the $600 early on and now the camera is $500 and falling...with cause. LOL

get over it..

the camera is what it is.. is anyone sticking a gun to your head to buy it?

swivel LCD????..... 10's of millions of photographers over a hundred years have been able to position their head behind the camera.. who cares?

RAW?... learn how to expose your photographs correctly, set the default in camera processing to minimal and there is NO difference... who cares?

as far as the f2.0 lens??.. see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=20727739

canon are in business to make money...the G7 will outsell its predecessors.

No

IS ameliorates camera shake. It does nothing for subject movement. A faster lens would allow a faster shutter speed at the same aperature, allowing you better to photograph a moving subject

What? F2.8 isn't f2.8 because the two camera designs are different?
that means a flim SLR, a DSLR and a P&S. You might be referring to
the effects of how much DOF one gets at f2.8 in a P&S vs a DSLR or
a MF back?
Yes, and to the fact that due to DSLRs’ higher light sensitivity one can achieve the same deep DOF as with P&S cameras by using smaller apertures (higher f-stop numbers). And for the same reason f2.8 lens on a DSLR yields much better low light capabilities than f2.8 lens on a P&S camera. Thus not equal in meaning.

Now that's classical rationalization at its best without being realistic. IS will never replace a fast lens. And the high ISO is at a noisy price.

damn Canon is right.

-Virvatulet
That is absolutely incorrect. An f2.8 aperture is an f2.8 aperture and that aperture yields the same amount of light and exposure at a given shutter speed and given iso regardless of what camera/lens combo we're comparing. Your saying f2.8 on a DSLR provides more light than f2.8 on a P&S, which is completely WRONG. Please refer to Photography 101.

Of course it will(doh), like the new SD-series cameras have sold better than the old ones but S400 still has one of the best image quality. I agree with you, Canon is in the business to make money, photography comes after the money but does it have to be so obvious.

virv..
its the smaller sensor that yields higher DOF, not the sensor sensitivity..

That is absolutely incorrect. An f2.8 aperture is an f2.8 aperture
Which part of “due to DSLRs’ higher light
sensitivity” you didn’t understand? Fix sensitivities
to equal noise levels (IQ) and you’ll see what we are talking
about.

-Virvatulet
LOL....the sensore has nothing to do with the lens aperture rating of f2.8. Having shot digital for 10 years, and now with a pair of 1DmkII bodies and a 1DsmkII, I know plenty about sensitivity, noise and resolution from DSLRs, thank you.
