ETTL not available choice on 580EX

After two hours of scanning both my 5D and my Speedlite manuals, I can't seem to toggle the mode button to ETTL (to enable "fully automatic flash shooting"). I have the program mode of my 5D set to "P". Pushing the mode button on the flash toggles the LCD panel from TTL to M and then to Multi and then back to TTL. As a result, I can't get the flash to work. Any ideas would be so much appreciated.

Check the firmware version of the camera. Canon released a firmware update several months ago that among other things addressed the proper display of ETTL with the 580 and 5D. If my memory is correct, the problem was purely cosmetic - the LCD on the flash showed M or TTL but it was actually working in ETTL. The firmware upgrade fixed this.

You upgrade the firmware for the 5D--and that corrects the problem of communication between the camera and the flash. There was a similar problem with the STE2 and the 5D before the new firmware. Works fine now. Just go to the Canon site, support and download and install the newest 5D firmware.

Custom Function 03 must be set to 0
if it is set to 1 you will get TTL

BUT!!!!!

I just sent mine in for the same reason- I could force it into ETTL by switching custom function 03 back and forth, but the minute Ipt it on the 5d or 1DS MK2 or any digital body,
it immediately went to TTL-

Canon Service Center is fixing and sending back for no charge..

I am a CPA member..dont know if it matters as it just went past the warranty- So they are very nice people I would say!

I was taking pics last night and the first few shots were almost all white. It ended up the flash was fully seated in the shoe. I pushed it in, it clicked, I retightened and it worked perfectly. Evidently not seating it completely will still let the flash work but in a goofed up fashion. :)
is seated fully forward in the hotshoe. If it isn't, you won't get
off of TTL to ETTL.
