I bought this lens from ebay and wondered how can I tell how old it is? I have a 7 digit number located on the lens.....is there a website that would give me this info?

Would be to specify which kind of 50 f/1.4. SMC-M, SMC-A, F, FA. That would at least get you within a decade.

Verbage is not a word, but a mangling of verbiage - differing in both print and meaning. It replaces more cumbersome words such as copy and text.

I have a smc-a and by looking on that website it shows 1984-1989. I guess I have to get used to this lens and my *istdl.....It just seems all of my pictures are underexposed and require alot of pp. I have a Sony R1 and I know that is not a true dslr but I get amazing pictures straight out of the camera and with this one, not so much...

Yes, I do. I thought it was a good lens for low light but for me, not so much....

I don't know if I should take it to a local camera shop and have them look at it.....

I thought I should "Love" this camera, but sadly I don't.

Did you get a body only or did you get the kit lens too? If you got the kit lens I'd say start with that. It's possible it's the lens, but it may also be your camera settings. Do you shoot raw or jpeg?

Yes, I did get the kit lens and I also have some automatic lenses from my ZX-7....I don't know...I am just not "wowed" with this camera and I really want to be.

Do you have images that you can share with me?

I am leaving for home now, and will ck back in the morning...I look forward to hearing your thoughts...if any.

Thanks!

Pre-F lenses (include M42/K/M/A lenses) might have underexposure issue with some AF bodies. I don't know why but they did with Z-1p, but not MZ-10. I have never tried pre-F lenses on my DS so cannot confirm.

I use an m50/1.4 and a A100/2.8macro on my DS2 with no exposure problems whatsoever in all available modes. Not sure on DL but should be similar I would have thought. Might go into a camera shop that sells other used pentax lenses and test some to see if the problem is the lens or the body.

Too bad the DL isn't doing it for you. I really like my DS2 (used an MZ5n before and loved it too)

dslr's on the whole are quite conservative with things like sharpness, colour and contrast. First off, try increasing sharpness, saturation and contrast in the menu's in your camera, and shoot JPEG. Otherwise, have a go increasing these things by going into Photoshop and the Image> Adjustments menu.

dslr's have a different emphasis than digicams - more on resolution, photo-realism, tonality and low artefacts. This can mean that is harder to get eye-catching photos, but when you do, they'll be much better!

If you post some photos here, we could probably give some pointers.

Duncan.

The SMC-A 1.4 is an awsome lens, esp in low light situations IMHO. I have used the a 1.4 on my *ist DS2, there is a menu setting you have to change that allows the lens to 'unlock' and allow you to manually set the apperture. A good test would be to set the lens to 1.4 in shutter priority and see how it goes. Also make sure that the body is set to manual focus, as that makes a difference how my ds2 determines when to release the shutter.

depending on scenes. For M-lens, and M42 lens, I mostly meter in the M-mode with AE-L to measure light. I think roll the Av value by +1 to +1.5 stops depending on the scene.
