In Aperture priority mode (I have not tested this in other modes)
When I set Auto ISO max 800, min shutter speed: 1/60s.

1. It works corrctly and it starts from where I set my initial ISO (e.g.200) and goes up to 800 to maintain 1/60. After that it underexposes.

2. If I manually set ISO (in the Auto ISO mode set above) to, say, 1600...when it meters, the viewfinder still says 800 (max set in the auto).

So, in auto ISO mode, is there no way to set an ISO that is greater than Auto ISO Max? Or am I doing something wrong?

3. The auto ISO does not seem to work when I use flash.

Auto ISO is explained on pages 152-153 of the US. D200 manual. If Auto ISO is turned ON, then ISO cannot be set (overridden) to greater than 1600 in any mode.

It's not that clear with a flash. The manual indicates that the flash will adjust rather than the ISO, but maybe I'm misinterpreting.

Auto ISO works as long as you have Auto ISO 'ON'.

What you manually set ISO, it has no impact except for when you are taking pictures using the flash.

When I want to set the ISO manually, I turn the Auto ISO off to have it working according to the ISO I set manually.

When I take pictures both with and without the flash in conjuction with using Auto ISO, I set the ISO to max ISO 400 to lessen the noice to minimal level as the manually set ISO takes over when using flash.

Hope it helps....

When you use flash, the minimum shutter speed will be the min speed for flash you set. ISO will kick in only if the flash is maxed out.

To try this set the aperture to be very low (16 or 22) and shoot a subject around 5-6 meters away. Don't forget to use D lens. You will see ISO will go up.

If I set Auto ISO and the Max to 400,

1) I can set ISO manually to any value upto 400. That is, If I set ISO 200, it would not fall back to ISO 100 (and stay at 200) if I have enough light , but would go upto the max set (400 in this case) if there is not enought light. This behaves as expected.

If I set Auto ISO and the Max to 400,

2) I cannot set any ISO greater that 400. Whatever I set (800, for example), it always falls back to the max value set (400).

Is #2 above normal behavior?

Auto ISO is set at Custom Setting Menu b1 (as you already know).
Here you set max. value of ISO, and min. shutter speed.

You can also set ISO at Shooting Menu - ISO Sensitivity.

These two have nothing to do with eachother.

If you have Auto ISO 'ON', this Auto ISO setting will override the ISO Sensitivity setting (800 in your case).
Auto ISO setting will adjust the ISO from 100 to the max. value you have set.

From above case, when connect the flash; the flash will work accordig to the ISO Sensitivity setting you have choosen (800 in your case).

Understand??

Understand??
Kinda...
:)

So, if Auto ISO max is set at 400 max
Using the top left button and right dial,

1) Manual ISO can be set to Any value Upto 400. The actual ISO MAY go upto 400 automatically if there is not enough light.

2) Manual ISO can be set to ISO any value over 400, but the actual ISO WILL ALWAYS fall back to 400.

The reason I am insisting on this is that is the behavior I am seeing and I am not sure that is how it should be.

Sorry for my bad english, it is not my native language.

This is my experience too - so to get around this I set my max ISO to 1600 with Auto on then I can manually select an ISO anywhere from 100 to 1600 and (light permitting) the D200 will stay at this 'start' ISO (but allow the camera to alter ISO as light starts to fail).

I can't comment on how this behaves with flash

This basic rule;

If you want to adjust ISO manually(front command+left top ISO botton) you set Auto ISO to 'OFF'.
The Camera will behave according to the ISO setting you set.

If you want to use the Auto ISO function, you set it 'ON'.

The Camera will behave according to the setting of ISO you have set at Auto ISO menu. (max. ISO etc)

The ISO setting you have done with front command+left top ISO botton WILL HAVE NO EFFECT WHAT SO EVER AS LONG AS YOU HAVE Auto ISO 'ON'

However, The FLASH will work ONLY according to the ISO you set manually(front command+left top ISO botton).

understand better??

P.S: your English is fine enough. :-))
