Other than not saving to the card, does Digital Preview have any advantages over taking a test photo?

Does auto ISO change ISO in whole stops or in smaller (e.g., 1/3 or 1/2 stop) increments?

Below what shutter speed does auto ISO boost ISO? Does the shutter speed that triggers an ISO boost vary based on lens focal length?

Thanks,

Jeff

Almost three weeks since you posted this inquiry. Unusual that nobody answered you yet. I cannot. Couldn't wait for the K10D, and really need the SR, so I'm picking up a K100D tomorrow (to go along with my two Ds bodies. I have a K10D coming too, but it looks like that won't hit the states until early December.). When I've had a chance to play with the K100D a bit, I'll respond with some answers, if I can.

Don't know

Whole stops. Exif always show iso 200, 400, 800 etc.

Good question that I was asking myself. Hope someone will answer.

Two days ago a gentleman at Wolf Camera told me that they would supply the K10D to preordering customers by early November, and that he expects the camera to actually be on the shelves by mid November.

Early November means next week...

Hmm I am using the optical preview, so I am not sure what the advantage is... but it saves you from deleting the test photo...

Well I am not the right one to ask... I set it manually and shoots at 200, like 98% of the time and 400 for the rest...

I have like 20 shots in total shot above ISO 400 and most of those were just to test it.

Well see above, I do not use it, but hopefully someone else will be able to help you out.

Not much help from me, but it is the best I can do for you.

Good luck with the camera, the K100D is a neat little thingy.

I believe that it has an advantage. If I remember correctly the image remains on the display until you press a button or some other action. The Picture Preview on the other hand goes away after the set amount of time expires. I like it a lot better than the optical preview because the optical preview simply applies the stop to the lens which can make the image in the viewfinder too dark. The ditial preview applies the entire EV to the image which allows you to check not on DOF but EV as well. I really thought this a marketing gimic until I used it in the field. I love the feature.

Well, it would remove some dead spots for the number challenges. I haven't played with it, but I don't see how it could have any other advantages.

Whole steps just like regular ISO. As far as I know, all the cameras that do have partial stops are doing it in software.

I can't tell - even on spot the metering is changing when I zoom. I guess I would need a tripod and an evenly lit area. It seemed to bottom out around 1/40th of a second with the kit lens. I'm getting different metering when zooming (aperature mode set above 5.6)

This forum was moving so fast when I posted my questions, that my post was probably on page 3 before anyone saw it.

I have had my K100D for about 2 weeks, and I second your succinct review.

First, thanks to all for your responses.

I have had my K100D for about two weeks, so I have partial answers to my own questions.

I did not think I would use Digital Preview before I got the camera, but I have been using it in the field as a quick way to determine if I have the right exposure/EV compensation. As someone noted, the image stays on the screen until you push a button, unlike the post-shot preview.

I understand now that ISO changes in whole stops.

I have not been able to test whether focal length affects how auto ISO works, because I have only used the FA 35mm since I got the camera. (I may never take it off.)

I wish it had one difference. I like to do different perspective shots-ground level, raised overhead, etc. Often, these are shot blind, press conference style.

IF I could shoot one using preview, then have a way to save THAT image, it would be neat. As it is, I don't use the dig preview for more than just checking lighting, because it really, really sucks to look at the "perfect" image on the LCD, knowing you can neither replicate, nor save it.

If they had it so you used the preview slider to shoot, then could transfer the image from buffer to card by, say, hitting the shutter button, it would be awesome.
