Boy am I mad!

I have a CD burner on my computer but wouldn't know how to go about
saving images to a CD. Does this require special software? Also,
can you recommend a site that could explain to "computer
illiterates" such as myself how to go about saving my digital
photos to a CD?

Kathy
Kathy, if you have the CD burner on your computer, I would bet that you have software smile . Many computers come loaded with basic Adaptec CD burning software and its really REALLY easy to use. It will walk you through the whole process--its as simple as putting the CD in the burner, the software will open and ask you what want to create (audio, one to be used on various computers, etc), you click on your choice, then it will open a window that will look much like what you would see in 'My Computer' or the old explorer. In the top window you will browse to the folder that holds your photos, open it and then drag the folder or files you want included on the CD to the bottom part of the window--which is actually the CD folder. At the bottom of the page, it will tell you how much more room you have available. You can save your images in any format you wish also. When you have selected, you click on 'create CD' in the top menu and that's it--it will tell you when its done. Can't be much easier.

Do you know how to save your images to your harddrive?? Can you locate those images on your harddrive?? If you can do both of those, then you can easily burn a CD. If you don't have Adaptec software, there is one version for sale that is quite reasonable.

Hope this helps.

I think you guys are missing the point. I think he is frustrated because they have altered his original pictures when he expect them to simply put all the images into 2 CDs.

Anyway, look at the bright side of things. I bet that your pictures must be incredibly nice and absolutely stunning. :)
Well how much did you pay for those CD's, at least $10-20?

You can get a CDRW burner for $50 or lower. Check out this except
from techdeals.net:

1/3/02
"p-dawg- sent word that Outpost.com is offering the Cendyne
12/8/32X CD-RW drive for $69.99+S/H and there's $20 rebate that
gets your price down to $49.99+S/H. Click here for the techdeal and
search for '3200381'.

That's not really analogous to buying a car vs. a ticket!

Believe me... it's worth it! Great way to archive all those pics
you plan to take.

Thank you so much Diane! I just have the basic "Easy CD Creator 4" by Adaptec, but don't see "Smile". I will look into it though. Your instructions were excellent! I love this Forum because people don't put you down for being a novice.

Hi Kathy,

When Diane wrote smile , she wasn't referring to the name of a software package. She just meant that she was smiling as she wrote that. smile

The Easy CD Creator software is what you're looking for.

First of all, anybody with a digital camera really should have a CD Burner. Regarding the earlier car analogy, I'm sure your not just taking photos every couple years are you?

Second of all, I know (hope) you only sent them copies of your Christmas photos, right? So you still have the original photos still on your hard drive, right?

If not, I think you just learned a couple VERY important lessons here...Bob

Mike, thank you very much. That taught me a lesson--one must be very clear. We were all novices once--and I come here for help and to help---but not confuse. LOL

Kathy--that's exactly the software I was talking about. It will walk you through it--and if you have any questions about it, I will be glad to help. I use it often and its very easy once you get the hang of it.

As to buying the CD burner....

Would you all advise a person who anticipates travelling once every
few years to buy a car to save the price of a bus ticket?

Yeah, I know I didn't make that point in my original post. But did
I need to???
Hey Dan,

People are just trying to be helpful. Getting a CD burner is a reasonable suggestion. It is not a criticism of your choice to have Ritz burn a CD for you.

The analogy with the bus ticket is flawed anyway. A car is many, many times more expensive than a bus ticket, it requires ongoing maintenance, license fees, and other expenses, and you can't drive one safely if you only drive once every few years. A CD burner and some blanks cost only a small multiple of what you paid, there are no ongoing expenses (other than more blanks when you need them), and if you forget how to use the software, you're not likely to kill anyone.

Back to the original issue, you already know that Ritz will give you a full refund, so what's to be mad about? It was a simple mixup. They offer a Picture CD service, and it sounds like you got either that or something like it. They will redo it the way you want, or give you your money back.

If this is the worst thing that happened to you yesterday, I'd say you had a pretty good day! :-)

Kathy,

Take a look at some of the promotions in your local office supply store or computer store. I often find rebates and regularly buy blank CD-Rs at $0.19 per disk - in packs of 25, 50 etc. At that price you can afford to experiment a little and make a few mistakes.

I sent some jpegs to Ofoto.com. One had a bit of a reddish tint,
but looked good. It came back really red.

A couple other pics were fine tho. They didn't mess with 'em.

Glad it was free - I'll keep trying.

Thank you to Diane, Michael and Peter. Also thank you for not laughing at this newbie for thinking "Smile" was a program. I may be a grandma "7 times over", but I am willing to learn - and it does my heart good to find patient people.

I had some Christmas pictures taken with my Canon G1. I put them
on a card with a card reader, and took it to a Ritz Camera store to
have two CDs made. All the pictures were in JPG format. All were
1024x768.

After about two weeks, I got the CDs back. The pictures have been
modified!

Some were resized (to a larger format), some cropped, some had
their color
and levels changed completely! All were renamed, were in different
order,
and none of them had the original date (all had a date of
1/11/2002). And
the EXIF information is missing.

I thought one of the benifits of digital photography was that you
don't have some sloppy lab messing up things. This is incredible
that somebody would totally screw up DIGITAL FILES.

These things are going back for a refund.

Be careful if you use this service.

Dan
I would go back and demand that they re-do it properly, with no edits. Just a straight copy. If they can't or won't do this, I would demand my money back.

Get your refund like you state. Hopefully it works out.

I found that XP makes things easier: simply click on 'My computer' and go to the folder with the pictures. Then on the left side you'll see the task: 'copy to CD'. Select pictures you want and then choose that task. It will be first copied to a temporary folder and then you can start the process from that temp. folder.

Also I found that my local Costco takes both CD and compactflash (so no more cd burning necessary for me). The machine copies your pictures directly. Pretty good quality and same price as regular prints.

To clarify for every who is wondering the same thing about my practices, no I don't take photos every couple of years.

Nor do I put all my photos on CD.

I don't like the way XP sets both the file creation and modification date to the date when you created the CD. There may be some sort of advanced option to keep the date but I haven't found it yet.

EXIF data, embedded in the file remains intact.

I know that this will stir up some folks but here goes anyway. I used to use all HP burners and recently tried other brands and they were bundled with Nero software. I think (my opinion only) that this is the best software for general usage. I have since dumped all of the Adaptec versions from both of my kids computers and installed Nero.

Very easy to navigate and have yet to make any coasters, and have been burning up to 24x.

I always make two copies of my photos to CD and archive one in a safe place.

Just my $.02

What a kind posting to Kathy J.

I was intrigued by your signature line about B/W, so I had to take a peak at your link. Your photos are so beautiful, especially your shot of the "Lonely Bench". Color may be seducing you, but...resist.
