Neat photo.

I hope you don't mind. I'm practicing my PP using Dan Margulis' LAB techniques. What do you think?

I like what you have done. It appears
you used something analogous to the Shadow/
Highlight tool in Photoshop.

Dave, this is a wonderful shot. Golly, shades of my childhood. Where did you shoot this? The colors are fabulous, the bridge makes it perfect, and the perspective is very nice. I like this a lot.

Essentially the Dan Margulis LAB process has several steps.

Open Photo image
Transfer to LAB mode.
Increase the slope (try out) of the "a" channel. - Green/Magenta.
Increase the slope of the "b" channel. - Blue/Yellow.

Find the area of significance in the photo and increase the slope (contrast) in the "L" channel. - Luminoscity (Lightness).
In the "L" channel - adjust Shadows/Highlights and add some USM.

Increasing the slope in any channel increases the contrast. Since the "a" and "b" channels are colors and not Lightness as in RGB, increasing the slope increase the contrast between shades of color. This brings them out nicely. Since this works best with rather dull/drab photos (and your definitely isn't) I only added a relatively small amount.

The bad part about LAB is that it gets rather complex. The good part is that you can do an awful lot in LAB. Another good thing is that there's really only one book on the topic. By Dan Margilis (guru).

I've been going through the book in great detail. Some chapters/pages several time over. It got me to learn some excellent topics that are valid in other ways.

I just learned a bunch about channel masks. Great tool.

In any event, i really like your photo.
