It's the hardest thing to fix in post.
Indeed, except for the color saturation issue, it's the one thing that can't be fixed in post-processing.

Yes, I know there is software out there to "reduce noise", but all the results I've seen look suspiciously like a combination of smoothing and sharpening, and there is a loss of detail.

Various ways to reduce chip noise:
a) Subtract dark frames all the time (even on short exposures)
b) Coadd several exposures with a lower amplifier setting
c) Cool the CCD chip (prohibitive current draw though)
d) bigger pixels (--> bigger chip --> prohibitively expensive)

(a) and (b) combined could significantly reduce image noise, but would probably require more processing time and perhaps more RAM.---- Dave
