G7 First Impressions

I read the reviews but I cannot still figure out why Canon needed a G7. The camera does not make sense. It lacks the ergonomics and the swivel LCD of the G6. It has some improvements, but not many for the price premium over the S3, which I still think is an excellent camera with a better zoom lens. Yes, having RAW support is good, but the LCD is still of a low resolution for its size. My guess is that the G7 is not going to do very well, but I can be proven wrong.

I wonder if they have fixed / improved shutter lag on the G7 ?

This reviewer pulled his punches, because he/she didn't express disappoint over the shortened batterly life and lack of RAW --these are big deals to the serious hobbyist/semi-pro! I am thinking Canon chose a friendly reviewer on this one...

I really want to like this camera, but the lack of raw (which can't cost a dime to include) and small battery sink it for me. I'm looking elsewhere for the first time for a portable cam --and I've been a loyal Canon customer for over 30 years! (FTB, F1, and now 1DmkII). This is a great opportunity for Nikon to win some of my interest for the first time. Back when, Nikon was dominant, but Canon offered similar quality for less money. How times change...

Dave, I sincerely wish you well in your new search. Keep posting and keep in touch. We are not all meant to use the identical cams. ;)

I wonder if anyone, somewhere, considered the G6 as "throwing away money" ? ;)

When I was young, I threw away money on "wine, women, and song?, well, cars instead of song, now, my kids throw money at clothing stores, my brother at Cruise Lines, my government in every direction but mine, and what better direction to "throw" money at than new cameras that make our hobbies/interests/work more enjoyable. ;)

i think this camera might be a popular choice in the end - just -
because of the large majority who just want an expensive camera
with good quality. also, its upto the people in the stores who
might just sell this camera to all those premium camera buyers (not
the genuine prosumer buyers who appreciate good tech, and also not
the entire G6/5/4 legion). there might be dslr owners who want
another updated prosumer camera - but not finding anything else
would just pick this one up without a choice!
The G7 may appeal to buyer who want a good but very compact camera. However, as an owner of a G2 and a G6, I would definitely say that the "G7" is not a G camera. Why Canon gave it such a designation is really beyond me. Why the price is so high is also an unknown, when better cameras are cheaper. I cannot believe that anybody would seriously consider buying a camera in which the flash is based so low that the lens barrel manages to obstruct its action!!!

You have a point. However, it's hard for me to believe that many
DSLR owners would choose a "G"7 given its high price for the
feature set it offers. I would guess that this group would be more
likely opt for an A6xx/7xx/F30 instead...OR simply choose another
lens for their DSLR if they're going to spend that kind of money
for what a "G"7 has to offer. I would agree completely with you if
Canon brought out nicely done Pro2 (I'd be buying one myself). On
the flip side, I do acknowledge that there will certainly be those
buyers who choose the "G"7 but my prediction is that the sales of
the camera will be very lackluster or the price will fall a lot and
soon...or both. If the price falls quickly Canon will likely regret
the cost cutting they did on the present "G"7 because it will be
all for naught. Time will tell. :-)

Jim
absolutely! on second thoughts ... yeah, that kind of money is way too much ! i was just looking around and found that the pentax *ist DL - the camera and the kit lens costs lesser than the g7! the dslr is leagues apart with its build quality, and in this age of digital cams selling by the truckloads - particularly canon. its a small wonder that people are issed at the high sticker price (plus all those stripped features).

My posts among all the G7 bashing was that the ethics of the reviewer would come into question if ANY good was said by those irrational basher of a product they have not held or own. Thanks, Dave.

imb ....I don't throw any money away at beer at liquor, large expensive restaurant meals, gambling, lotteries, and now you have led me to wonder what you "throw" money at. A better way to put it is, what do you enjoy spending your discretionary money on?
