Proconsumer Cameras - 24mm

Nimh is readily available in towns/cities but surprisingly hard to find at a local gas station, hardware store etc. Lucky to even find alkalines there. I'm not keen on AA's myself, I hated keeping sets of ni-cads charged for my flash and motor drive and trying to sort them out on the go when swapping. At home I had a 2x6 screwed in the wall with dozens of holes drilled with a dead side and matched sets on the other. Since lithiums I'm happy to limit myself to a few chargings a month of nimh's for the flash and gps.

Maybe there are large numbers of people who tried it and didn't
like it compared to the few who tried it, liked it and bought it.
Just a thought as I've never tried one although that top mounted
LCD turns me off.

Maybes and suppositions, coupled with zero personal experience with the R1, do not add much to this discussion.

Issues vis-a-vis camera ergonomics are mostly related to personal style and preferences rather than any universally good or bad design. What I object to is people - reviewers and others - making blanket statements about a camera's ergonomics (handling characteristcs) which purport to be "objective" when what they really are saying that they, as a singular individual, find the camera awkward to use in some respect.

It is possible to make some objective, or at least comparative, statements about a camera's ergonomics, such as the view finder is dimmer or has a lower magnification than another camera, or that the grip is large or small. Those are useful pieces of information. But, blanket statements like a camera has "bad" ergonomics are just opinions and often not well informed ones at that.

I will reiterate my personal opinion - I find the R1's handling characteristics, including the top mounted LCD, the zoom and focus rings, as well as the other controls to be very easy to use. That opinion is based upon 9+ months of use.

They must be Sony haters, because the R1 has all the contols in the right place and is great to handle.

Happiness is that one shot that you can't find fault with.

Well yea... But then again, "noisy" is a personal preference as much as ergonomics. I feel i can use my R1 quite acceptably upto ISO 800, and ISO 1600 if i must. For my purposes, even the few ISO 3200 shots i've taken are ok, after PP.

I actually don't disagree with you. Any review is based on personal preference of the reviewer but when a large majority of reviewers say the same thing you have to wonder. On the other hand when something new comes out it could be simply that they aren't used to the new way of doing things and if they gave it a chance they might grow to like it.

Bingo! The R1 requires a few new paradigms. Some people don't even have one... ;-)

In my opinion, ISO 3200 is a bit too noisy if it's a color shot. But for some reason, the noise looks good in B&W. It has a pushed Tri-X feel...can be quite artistic...

All the automated features cameras have, including the R1, are workarounds for good technique. I used my SLRs and now the R1 fully manual when I want keepers. The R1 is the best all around camera (IMHOP) ever made, lens, sensor, zebra pattern, live preview and much more. Got my first camera in 1953.
