Maybe there are large numbers of people who tried it and didn't
like it compared to the few who tried it, liked it and bought it.
Just a thought as I've never tried one although that top mounted
LCD turns me off.

Maybes and suppositions, coupled with zero personal experience with the R1, do not add much to this discussion.
Issues vis-a-vis camera ergonomics are mostly related to personal style and preferences rather than any universally good or bad design. What I object to is people - reviewers and others - making blanket statements about a camera's ergonomics (handling characteristcs) which purport to be "objective" when what they really are saying that they, as a singular individual, find the camera awkward to use in some respect.
It is possible to make some objective, or at least comparative, statements about a camera's ergonomics, such as the view finder is dimmer or has a lower magnification than another camera, or that the grip is large or small. Those are useful pieces of information. But, blanket statements like a camera has "bad" ergonomics are just opinions and often not well informed ones at that.
I will reiterate my personal opinion - I find the R1's handling characteristics, including the top mounted LCD, the zoom and focus rings, as well as the other controls to be very easy to use. That opinion is based upon 9+ months of use.
