I have money to buy a Digital SLR and I choose Canon.

I am not sure to buy which one. 30D or Digital Rebel XTi?
Which one a "more" professional guy usually buy?

I need your input.

Thanks!!!

If you have no camera now, the choice should be between the 30D and the 400D (Rebel xti). The XTi is certainly a better featured camera than the XT, and not as good as the 30D. You can still get good prices on the 20D, but I'd stay with those two choices for the larger screen, if nothing else.

I went from the Rebel to the 30D, and it was a nice sized leap. The Rebel is an excellent camera, but I think the new 400D has surpassed it.

Do you want a smaller body or a bigger body? Do you want 3fps or 5fps? Both produce professional image quality. I have the 20D and XT, and I use them interchangeable and in a professional capacity. And I could just as easily do that with a 30D and XTi too.

If I read this question yesterday I would have directly answered the 30D but a friend of mine bought an xti just yesterday night and I had the chance to play with it.

In two words it is a great piece of hardware. really amazing and its IQ is great too

1) I like it because it is small and light: I am not complaining about the weight of the 30D but if you like to travel light the xti is really great

2) I used to hate the 300D and 350D just because it was so hard to change the settings, well this is not an issue anymore, I like how nice and easy it is to change settings and they are displayed on the big LCD, the missing top lcd is really not a problem. Of course it is still faster to change, at least for me, on my 30D because I'm used to it but the 400D is really good

3) it will save you money to buy better lenses

so if you are a newbie and never been spoiled by a 10D, 20D, 30D yet then my advice is really consider the 400D

hope it helps

I think a good professional can make sales with either one. But if it was me, my choice would be for the 30D. It's slightly more rugged, although that doesn't mean the xTi is cheaply built either. The controls are more ergonomically laid out, and the larger body makes it easier for me to hold. I like having the option of 5fps, but of course you don't need that for portrait work. There won't be much difference in image quality.

In the end, it comes down to which one you feel more comfortable working with - it's very subjective, and there's no right answer. You should see if you can borrow both and try them out.

I was at the same point last week.

Once I went to a shop and compared them actually holding them, the clear winner was the 30D. Its amazing.

I doubt that the 2MP make a real difference, and the sensor cleaning mechanism is just another thing to break on the 400D.

Feel them next to each other, and look through the viewfinder and I will very quickly understand what I am talking about.

thanks for your valuable input.

"All Day I Dream About Photography". that is about me now since
my wife approved the purchase of a great/advanced canon.

Mark, I totally agree with you about trying it out in person.
But it is sometimes hard to find both. I will probably go to
a local BestBuy to see it tomorrow.

I was in the same situation as our OP two weeks ago.

My personal choice was the 30D - one reason was because it IS heavier. Because I was planning on putting the 24-105L on it, I felt the lighter 400 (XTi) was too light for balance. I have since found that the 5 fps is a nice feature (this from one that scoffed at drives on film SLRs - I have an A-1 Canon).

Bottom line; it is a sweetheart to use, particularly with this lens.

Just my personal opinion - there's nothing wrong with the 400, but the sensor cleaning mechanism hasn't been proven in the field - just about everything on the 30D has been tested on the 10D and 20D.

Glenn, thanks for the input!

Looks like you guys all professionals (I am still a G3 owner since 2002!).

Here is the list I am thinking about after some research:

Canon EOS 30D 8.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
SanDisk SDCFH-2048-901 2GB ULTRA II CF Card (Retail Package)
Canon 2400 SLR Gadget Bag for EOS SLR Cameras
Canon 72mm UV Haze Filter (L-39 Sharp Cut) (mainly for protection purpose)

I want something practical and covering most situations. What do you think of my home work? I have a lovely 5-year daughter and G3 is too slow...

I am not a professional and moved from a G5 to a 30D. Your initial selection looks good - I have the 28-135 and it's a great general purpose lens and was also the first lens I bought for the 30D (mine came with the kit lens but I never use it.)

Take lots of pictures and read about the 30D and DSLRs. You'll learn a lot.

Steve,

Thanks for the input and it really makes me feel better. Look,
we are spending a lot but we are not pros.

A few minutes ago, I saw this thread. I would like to find
the justification for going for 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. Interestingly
enough, I did not see anybody mentioning this?

Any clue?

Thanks, David

What do you mean you saw this thread ; you started it ! :)

the 28 mm is very limiting on a crop camera ; I suggest you look at a lens starting at 17mm ... You will find it too long very soon.

Good options orderred by image quality ( my opinion here only ! ) increasing are :

-Canon 17-85 IS usm
-Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5
-Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
-Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS usm

There are others , but I have not tested/owned them to know . These I know for sure.
