Hi, new to DSLR. I have a new D80 and just learning how to use it. (Nikon SLR for years) Just wondering, if I use an AF lens with an aperture ring, does the DSLR 'know' which f number is set? (i only ask cause i have a zoom with no aperture ring, aperture is either set auto or by turning adjustment dial) Thanks in advance.....Definite DSLR newbie.

Hey, all you have to do is lock the 50mm at the smallest aperture (which Im guessing is either 16 or 22). The camera will function as if you had a non-aperture ring lens attached.

The minimum aperture on the f/1.4 is 16, and like the slightly slower f/1.8 there is a small slide-switch on the lens barrel to lock the aperture ring at f/16. Locking the ring is essential for proper use on a Nikon Consumer Dslr like the D80.

If you use the aperture ring the top LCD says 'FEE" and the camera won't function. That's called progress :-). You have to set it (lock it) to the smallest f-stop (16 or 22). With a D200 you can choose whether you want to use the aperture ring or the command dial for f=stop through a menu setting.

What exactly is "FEE" supposed to mean?
