What is your D-SLR Setup?

Camera:
  • 300D (most likely will not trade for anything else in the next couple of years)
Lenses I own:
  • Tokina 12-24 - landscapes, cityscapes, monuments, tight places
  • Canon 28-70/3.5-4.5 (old, discontinued lens) - walkaround; bought as a cheap but quality temporary option before I buy the lens I want
  • Sigma 100-300/4 - was bought to do wildlife and 'tele walkaround' but keep reading...
  • Canon 50/1.8 II - used for low-light no flash photography (I have a small kid and I don't like the idea of 'flashing' onto his face)
  • Tamron 90/2.8 Macro Di - macro/close-up and portraiture (excellent bokeh!)
  • Canon 400/5.6L - birding and general wildlife, occasionally for compressed landscapes and monument details
Lenses I've owned but sold:
  • Tamron 28-75/2.8 - was my walkaround and I liked it a lot; sold because... well, keep reading
Lenses I will buy:
  • Canon 24-105/4L IS - this will be my walkaround lens and my main workhorse; the reason why I sold Tamron 28-75 and will sell Canon 28-70/3.5-4.5. Extended range and IS make it a much more adequate lens to the kind of photography I like to do
  • Canon 70-200/4L IS (much likely - I need to wait for reviews) - this will be my walkaround tele - portraits/candids, compressed landscape, extra reach; will sell Sigma 100-300/4, which is an excellent lens but it's too heavy and too big to be a walkaround. Again, IS will be a decisive feature and I like its compactness and low weight
Eventually I'll trade 50/1.8 for Canon 50/1.4 (faster focus, better build) and I can consider buying one or two more fast primes (one wider - Canon 28/1.8 or Sigma 30/1.4 - one longer - Canon 85/1.8).

My walkaround kit will be Tokina 12-24 + Canon 24-105/4L IS + Canon 70-200/4L IS + Kenko 1.4x TC + 550EX, all packed in a very functional Lowepro Slingshot 200. Will add a close-up filter and a couple of other accessories which will allow me to shoot in almost any kind of situation and almost everything.

Best regards.

Hi!

I see you have the 17-85 IS AND the 28-135 IS lenses. Bit of overlap (as you also have the Sigma 70-300) but which of those do you prefer? I'm guessing you didn't buy both the Canon lenses at the same time? Did you bring the 28-135 from your "film" days?

I'm asking because I've heard/read that the 28-135 is a quite good lens though not wide enough on an APS-C camera, and a lot of people slag off the 17-85. Also, the 17-85 is well liked by others!! I'm in a purchasing dilemma and would ieally like an 18-300 range which seems, to me, to best filled by the Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-300IS (assuming they do get round to producing it!). That's about the most I can afford (we get right royally ripped off over here in the UK!).

I'd appreciate your views.

Cheers,

I have the 300D (maybe upgrade in 6 months or so? it's still very very good).
Lenses:
Tokina 12-24
Canon 17-85IS
Canon 70-300IS
Canon 50mm f1.8

This is all the money I was willing to spend. I know an even better setup would include the Canon 10-22 but the image quality of the Tokie is the very best, but the 10-22 range would of course give some extra width. the 50mm f1.8 isn't as good as the f1.4 but it's good enough for me. I'm very happy with this setup.
Hi all you 300D/350D/400D owners,

Please tell me what your D-SLR system consists of and what you use
each lens primarily for. Since I currently only am one lens strong
mine is a great example but for the sake of completeness:

. 400D
. Canon 50mm 1.8 - Used currently for everything will be used for
portrait photography and available light indoor situations once I
expand my lens set.
. BW 52mm Circular Polariser

Cheers,
Oz.

Ok, here goes. (From memory, I'm away from my office).

One 400D
One 300D backup
Canon 18-55 Kit lens for the 300D

Canon 18-55 USM lens for the 400D (got the USM version so it would communicate distance to the camera for the flash exposure determination).
Canon 55-200 USM
Canon 75-300
Canon 50 1.8 (favorite portrait lens. The equivalent of an 80 for 35mm)
Sigma 28 1.8 (Very nice wedding lens.)

550 Ex flash
420 Ex flash for backup

Stroboframe flip bracket

Various and sundry gadgets.

DIPics

  • Canon Digital Rebel (300D)
  • Tamron 17-50/2.8
Canon 60/2.8 macro
Canon 70-200/4L (just got this y'day)
  • Sigma EF-500 DG Super (flash)
This is about all I want right now.. since it's close to ideal for me too. As I practice more I may buy the 10-22 or similar, but not for a while. :)

Camera - 400D XTi

Lenses all Canon
17-40L - wide angle, landscape, groups - even used it for portrait

24-105L IS - walk around lens (street photography), groups, landscape

50mm/f1.4 - lighter weight days, portraits, street photography - just about everything......

Flash - Canon 420EX

I recycled my lenses to have fewer in numbers and better glass. I'm very happy with these lenses.

Well, I purchased the 28-135 a while ago..I actually just sold it today(oddly enough)...It is a nice lens...but I am going to invest in an L lens. The 17-85mm IS is ok...it's a little on the shaky side as of yet...I believe I will invest in the 17-55 lens. Lots more money..but in the end I think it will be worth it. The 17-85 seems overly soft and there is tons of purple fringing in extreme wide and barrel distortion.I haven't really put it through it's paces yet...So the verdict isn't out yet. On another side the sigma is shockingly nice(at least in my opinion). I consistently get nice shots from it. For the price it cannot be beat.

Had:

350D(sold for 400D for better focus and lcd)

Sigma 18-125(sold for canon 28-105f3.5/4.5_Sigma focused erratically).

Sigma 28-300(awful)...Sigma 70-300 APO(got my 1st L-70-200f4 L).

Canon 28-105f3.5/4.5(great lens for the $$-only sold it to get 24-105L).

Canon 70-200f4L(sold for 70-200f/2.8 IS L).

Have now:

Canon 400XTi(tomorrow!).

Canon 24-105L(great walk around)

Canon 70-200f2.8 IS L(as good as it gets-but it is big, heavy, attention getter).

Canon 18-55 kit(will sell to get 10-22mm Canon).

Kenko Pro 300 1.4X TC(nice!).

Canon 420EX

350D
(To record the image in Manual mode, RAW)
Slik Pro 500 DX and Canon Remote release
(Long exposures = ahhhhh...)
Sigma 10-20
(Wide landscapes and architecture)
Sigma 17-70
(Landscape and 'walk around')
Canon 50mm F1.8
(Portraits and cause its so cheap and good)
Set of Hitec ND Grads
(Get that Dynamic range traditionally!)
Hoya MC Polarizer
(If I am ever shooting in the sun = hardly ever)
Colour neutral, focussable flashlight

(Getting focus lock in the dark, painting with light - trekking back to the car in the dark)
2 spare batteries and 30GB ipod with camera adapter
(to extend the 'festivities' so to speak)
Plastic bag & lens cloth
(I like to shoot in the rain)
Capture one Pro 3.7
(To get the absolute finest output from RAW)
Adobe Photoshop CS2
(To get the absolute finest output from 16 Bit TIFF)
Photozoom Pro 2
(When 8MP isn't enough...)
Noise Ninja 2
(When you pull the shadows out too much...)
Good light and NZ Scenery
(Without which I would have nothing)

No telephoto - thats because the only good ones seem to be a ridiculous off white colour...(and too expensive!)

Body:
350D (a matter of time before I get the 400D though)

Lenses:
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (for the wide stuff, landscapes)
EF-S 17-85mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM (very versatile walkaround, everything else)
EF 50mm f/1.8 USM (low light and portraits)
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro (for the macro stuff)
EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5/6 IS USM (for the long stuff)

Filters:
Hoya UV, CirPol, ND4, ND8, R72 in various combinations for various lenses
Cokin P series GND, ND4

Tripod:
Manfrotto 190B legs, 488 RC2 head

Other stuff:
Couple of batteries, remote release, 80Gb DigiMate II image tank

Digital Rebel XT. Five lenses from 20 to 200 mm. Two zooms, three fixed.

These are all from my film EOS's, most recently an EOS-3 that's now collecting dust.

I Need to build up the short end of the focal length spectrum with what will probably be two, maybe three, lenses:

1. Fixed large aperture for unavailable light photography: Something to replace my 50mm f/1.8. I am leaning toward the Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

2. Short zoom for walkaround and travel. Agonizing over everything from Canon's pricey 17-85 USM-IS to their priceypricey 17-55 2.8 USM-IS, with Tamron and Sigma also in the running. This lens will replace my trusty Canon 28-135 USM IS.

3. Someday, maybe: A really short zoom, a special-purpose lens considering my photography. Canon 10-22 or Sigma (?) 12-24. To cover what my 20-35 USM gives me on film, plus a bit more on the short end.

I think that Canon and I will be in the 1.6 crop domain for a long time, so I don't mind considering EF-S lenses.

A digtal picture is worth a million longs.

im currently on a 300d with:

24-70 2.8 L (great lens for most mid range to close up work)
50mm 1.8 II (very good lens for alot of scenery work)

the stock 18-55 lens (good for alot of occasions, but doesnt excell at anything, very usefull if your going somewhere with friends and dont want to be tied down with alot of gear so to speak)
70-300 apo sigma (nice long distance lens for birdies and animals)

100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM (good also for the above, as well as many other situations, but bulky)
600mm mirror lens (which i really never use much)

Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens (for macro work, mostly on the bench, plus a few canon fd lens as well for the same)

Always wanted to buy the 17-40mm L lens but never quite made it (yet).

Then, 420ex, 530ex flashes, manfroto tripod + monopod, many different filters, several reverse mount adaptors, velbon focussing rails, battery grip, and i go everywhere with it in a tamron backpack.

350D
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5
Sigma 70-300 APO DG
Canon 50/1.8 MkiI

The whole setup is
I'm planning to add a decent tripod, some filters, and the 430EX flash.

Mine is as follow:

Canon EOS 300D
Canon EF-S 17-85 IS USM
Sigma EX 150/2.8 macro

Next on my shoping list is:
10-xx from Canon or Sigma
Canon EF 50/1.8
