Cheap D1x's on ebay

Netsolutions55 may be gone but others are quickly popping up to take his place.

How about this one for nerve: I have an auction going on e-bay for a Kodak DCS 620x digital camera. I checked the site tonight only to find that someone else posted a 620x for sale with that auction ending one day before mine. When I looked at the description of the camera, it was almost word for word what I had posted in a previous ad (he extended the warranty for another six months) but he included all he accessories I had listed. Of course, the seller has hidden his identity, has no feedback and lists his location as Belgium.

I advise anyone interested in a 620x to be very careful about bidding on that particular camera. Buyer beware (it has 14 bids on it but many are from the same person who also has a hidden identity).

I've heard this technique is used to drive the prices down on items someone wants to buy. Here's how it works.
  • See an item you want to buy.
  • Create an identical item that is slightly more attractive (more accessories, case, better warranty, etc) and have it end shortly AFTER the item you want to buy.
This keeps many people from bidding on yours - hoping to win the "other" one.
  • Just before it ends some mysterious person outbids them all with a million dollar proxy bid - voila! It all looks very legit and typically accomplishes it's goal of keeping the price down on an item of interest. No guarentees - but a scam none-the-less.
No - I don't do this. I am, however, an eBay sniper (I only bid on an item in the last minute of the auction - anything else just drives the price up).

Here's what you have to do:

Get a hold of Tim pronto...Tim's the one who has got to make amends here. And if Tim is unresponsive, filing a police report is the next step, both in Tim's area, and the buyer's area. He can also file for eBay's limited insurance coverage if a refund is not received:

I got this info from my contact at Ebay!!

He seems to have tons of D1x's for sale for 4200, USA warranty, He
says
he deals with a big wholesaler who supplies him with the cameras.
He is a Squaredeal member, but their liability is only for $250.

PJ, have you reported this to eBay SafeHarbor, [email protected]? This, I believe, breaks several eBay rules and it would be to your benefit to have it removed. Tell them everything you stated here. The only way that eBay polices this is when someone points it out to them.

. No guarentees - but a scam none-the-less.

The bottom line is to never bid on an item where the seller has no feedback or very little feedback. I've seen the same ads and had the same temptations, but I don't invest money where I don't know much about where my investment is going. I 've seen other higher priced items on ebay offered by sellers with no, or almost no feedback, with bidders who have a similar scant history ...I don't break that rule ever. When I shell out anything over $50 (ok so I am thrifty hehe) I read all the feedback for a person within (reason) and I want to see a lot of feedback for that person ...as they are likely to be legit. Sending $4000 to someone with no track record would scare the begezus out of me ....it should any of you too.

Yes, I reported it but don't know if it will do any good. After including all the info to SafeHarbor, I got an e-mail asking for pretty much the same thing. The other guy's auction ends in about two days, so there might not be time for eBay to take any action. Just hope someone doesn't get scammed by trying to buy what I am sure in a non-existent camera.

Or, maybe the guy plans to buy my 620x the day after his auction closes and then sell it to the high bidder of his auction... Yeah, that must be it :-)

I was one of the people that was lured in to his scam but as luck would have it there was aproblum with my credit card and paypal and the payment didn't go threw. So i am now again for the second time after almost getting burned looking for a camera but if it had not been for this forum i would have celard up the paypal thing and lost my money so i would just like to thank you all. and if any one knows of a good place to find a d1h let me know. Thanks again you saved me bigtime!

Here's a follow-up which doesn't give me a lot of faith in e-bay.

After contacting them about what I am sure is a bogus ad, they cancelled my listing by mistake.

Go figure.

Chris, I hate to be blunt, but here it goes!! Stop trying to search for a deal & buy it from a reputable dealer!! Call Christy at Roberts & get a D1H now for $3999!!!

A big DITTO here. Stick with the reputable folks like Roberts, and tell Christy that both Bill and Yamil say Hi :-).

Seriously, when you consider that the savings on both grey-market as well as the "scam" stuff on eBay is still only a 400-500 savings, it wouldn't be worth the risk to me on such an expensive item.

This is exactly what I expected, and I find that I have very little sympathy for Tim. Back near the earlier parts of this thread is a comment from Tim himself that he could only contact his "supplier" via email, and that he had to wire transfer money into his "suppliers" bank account. If that isn't an incredible red flag then I don't know what is.

I was watching this ever since he first put them all up for auction, and I was emailing eBay from the beginning as well. Just shows that the scammers are now moving into using dupes, oops "middlemen", to remove themselves one step further.

Caveat Emptor was never so true.

Guess I am pretty lucky that the money I sent to Tim via Paypal was still in

his Paypal account. After having Tim email Paypal that he wished to refund my money it was returned.

Don't think that he was intentionally trying to scam anyone but you know what they say about ignorance of the law.

I am through with middle payment sites such as Paypal. From now on I will diligently research and only pay directly through credit card so that I have some recourse.

Caveat Emptor... Absolutely!

Hello everybody,

After reading this episode of America's Most Wanted I would like to ask everybody if they know this ebay seller?

His ebay name is SMILFU, his emai address is [email protected] and he has 3475 feedback!! He has a lot of positive feedback from different ebay users, but all in a very short period of time.
He is offering quite a lot of compact flash cards at the same time.

I had the high bid on one of his auctions (256 MB card for $107) and received a warning through email from someone else warning me that he was scamed (sent money, received nothing).

SMILFU sent me (an automated??) message I won the auction. When I asked what the shipping cost would be I never received an reply.

Has anyone any real positive news about this guy??

Why risk it. You can get a new D1x from a Nikon Dealer for $4999.

This guy looks quite legit to me, although I don't think these cards are very fast. You can do much better with Ridata, Viking or Kingston, at not much more money.

I've sent an email to Ebay on this scam a few days ago. This is the response I received from Ebay today. After that you'll find my original email to them. Just wanted to let you know.

Dear ebay,
I saw an auction of several Nikon D1 digital cameras for a low price.
One of their auctions:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1313861055
In this peticular auction the offer 50 (fifty!!) cameras for $2400 each.
Since the price is very low, I'm hesitating to buy one.
Even more since I found a discussion about these guys on the forum
for digital cameras on dpreview:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=1922488
There are almost 60 people who contributed on this discussion and none
did receive a honest answer, let alone a camera!!

I know you can be hold resposable for the contents of every auction, but

since this really starts to look like a real scam (abusing the good name of ebay) I would like to ask you to check this "dealer" out and - if needed - stop his auctions.

Thank you,
Bert Kuijer
