Hi Everyone,

I visited the San Diego Wild Animal Park while vacationing last week.

When I got there a sign had been put up at the front gate that the Jaguars where temporarily off display due to construction which bummed me out.

There was a happy ending though and I did come away with these shots. :-)

Hope you enjoy them and comments/suggestions are welcome.

Regards,

harveyf

Shot with a Canon 20D + Canon 100 - 400 mm IS lens. (3 pics)
  1. 1 - I was walking with my wife and she told me to turn around and that I would be pleasantly surprised, which I was, and this is what I saw.

  1. 2 - It totally surprised me to see this beautiful wild animal being walked so casually on a leash through the facility.

  1. 3 - I did get a chance to brefly speak with the attendants walking the Jaguar & the dog but they really wanted to keep moving. I kept my distance though and after seeing the Jaguar staring at me while I took this pic I'm glad I did.

Very nice shots but I do believe the Jaguar is really a Cheetah.

Cheetahs are relatively docile in any case. They are not "stand and fight" animals, but "chase it down and kill it before it fights back"...I have been close to a hungry cheetah, and the cat was smart enough to realize that I had it by 200 lbs.

Would I approach even a full Jaguar? No way. Tiger, lion, polar bear? No way.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the comments.

For sure it's not a common sight.

I'm not all that brave. My adrenalin was flowing but I didn't want to get to close. :-)

Best regards,

harveyf
Hi Harvey,
Now THERE is something you don't see every day! I think I would
have kept my distance, you're a braver man than me :-)
Thanks for sharing, very unusual.

Thanks Dusty,

I appreciate the comments.

You are correct of course and it is a Cheetah. I have photographed them many times. It must have been the after effect of my vacation. :-)

Best regards,

That's really cool. I saw something about this on TV recently. They said they brought the dog along as it helped to calm and reassure the cheetah, having the dog being there and it being calm itself.

The San Diego Zoo is an incredible place for sure.

Really nice Harvey.

That dog has to have nerves of steel to walk along side with that thing.
I bet that jaguar is so strong if it wanted to it could take off in a second!

What's amazing is that the dog is calm under those circumstances!

that he read in a series of warnings, about what a human should do when faced with a hostile dog.

Being a clever pooch, he merely applied them to this situation - Don't show fear, don't run, be calm... :)

But I tell you right now, he was well aware that this was no ordinary cat, and he knew as well, that he was no match. Good Dog! Great shot!

Hello Endosquid,

Thanks for the intreresting information.

I wouldn't want to be close to any of those animals either.

I noticed in the pics that the lady attendant is holding the leash with the Jaguar and the man behing her has his leash attached to hers.

I guess they are taking all the precautions they can.

The Cheetah is truly a beautiful animal.
