Hi

Is anyone else having a problem with the Nikon View 4 software that came with the 995?
It repeatedly crashes my computer. (Win98)
Is there an update or anything?
(I didn't see anything when I looked at nikonusa.com)
Thanks
Carol

I am having problems as well during upload. I cant even ctrl/alt/delete to get out of it. Mine just stops uploading and sits there but the cursor can still move around on the screen, but it will do nothing. 98 as well. Its hit and miss with me.

I think Nikon View 4 (WIN 98) was partly to blame for my computer becoming really messed up. I didn't use it very much, but it and other things seemed to slow the computer down so much that it takes forever to load anything. I have removed it and everything else that isn's necessary. I got a FlashLink which is like a drive that I can plug into my USB port. It works like a disk drive and I can drag my pictures to may hard drive. Soon I'm going to have to reformat my hard drive and reload everything...NOT looking forward to that job!

Yes. It happens intermittently, but it's the worst when I have my USB card reader hooked up with no card in it. NV4 tries to read it, then freezes the computer. Wish there was a fix around.

Diane,

If you have W98 Second Edition, you can just install it and your computer will keep all the programs it has.

I had a game that wiped out both my SCSI CD's and all USB devices (mouse, scanner, printer). Luckly, I had a Startup disk with scsi cd support to boot up the computer. After installing W98 SE I had all my programs still functional.

A CHEAP way to be able to upload pictures, but not put up with NView is to just load the drivers, plug camera in and let the system load the drivers for the new hardware from the INF directory of the CD. Now just plug the camera in, turn it on, and look at Windows Explorer for the Removable Drive. Drag and drop, can't be any easier or cheaper (no cost of a CF reader).

Mitch

Why install the software at all? Just get a USB card reader and it sees your CompactFlash card as a hard drive. Then use a program like Irfanview (free) or ACDSee (better but costs) to view your images.

I've used the CoolPix 950, 990, and now the CoolPix 5000 and have never installed software with the manufacturers name on it.--Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com

Hi

I have used Nikon view once as it gave me too much problems.
Now all I do is connect my camera to the computer via a USB port.
The computer registers the camera as a removeable disk F and I
am able to see all my pictures directly via irfan view or any other
graphic viewer. When I find a picture worthwhile to keep I transfer
it to my D drive( cdrom) from where I am able to enhance or
what else I want to do via photoshop or photopaint.
I am quite happy with it and don't want to do it any other way.

I recently got a new computer that came loaded with windows xp. I orig had nothing but problems in trying to get my NV with camera, and my usb card reader to work. The latest xp drivers were not available from Lexar. I had to download using an older win 98 machine and burn a cd to transfer. What a hassle. So....when Nikon indicated that a new NV for xp was available I downloaded as soon as possible. This xp version of NV 4.31 works really good. No snags in downloading directly from cp995. It is fast. (almost as fast as the card reader in 98 was). The click and drag using explorer works very good.

Glad to hear that 4.31 works for you. I wonder if it will do anything for us who use 98??

Actually I only have W98 1st Edition. And yes, I've already done that once. But I might try it again. I think I have a bigger problem...maybe even a hard drive that's dyiing. But all the USB stuff did mess it up too. It takes forever to boot. I've finally disabled everything on startup except for explorer and systray. Once a program gets running, IE, OE, or even PhotoElements, it's okay.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that...

Thanks for the advice...

So far...I have been using NikonView 4 with no problems, yet. I did read that potential problems will crop up if you have installed or reinstalled the software without following the detailed instructions. For some reason, the program requires the user to follow a specific sequence of steps to install this program correctly. Also, if you install the program without completely unstalling any previous versions of NikonView you will also have problems. Apparantly, NikonView is not to be installed intuitively without using the sequence of installation instructions. NikonView 4 is relatively useless also for manipulating any images downloaded to your computer without your digital camera hooked up to the computer with CF card installed. You can only access a very limited portion of the NikonView software program without the camera attached to your computer with the CF card installed.

Agree totally with Diane. I let Nikon View load itself on the rare occasions when I connected the camera directly, then shut it down right away, and used win explorer in win98se to drag and drop. faster, safer. Fastest and safest was using a memory card reader. I think it's easier on the whole process, frankly. I had huge windows stability problems with two different sandisk card readers, bad enough that the shops took them back. my lexar reader has been bulletproof. I only used the camera connection to my laptop when travelling and suddenly stuck with a full memory card. Note that nikon and microsoft both suggest not manipulating photo files directly in winXP.

I forgot to add that I am using Win98SE and I have not yet had any problems with NikonView4. I did have to wrestle with the driver installation several times to get my computer to recognize the 995. It is not a difficult program to use, it is only limited in function and the fact that most of the software remains unusable and you can't access that part of the program unless a persons camera is connected to the computer.

Tell me how you wrestled the driver install. I have a brand new 885 and our laptop with Win98 First takes the software and recognizes the camera with no trouble. Our desktop with Win98SE serves up a fatal exception when loading the digital camera controller. The only thing that occurs to me is that I may have too many drives connected (floppy + LS-120 + Zip USB + Hard Drive + CD-ROM + CD-RW = a problem?). Do I have to dig into the box and take something out (the floppy can be replaced by the LS-120) or am I missing something else? Thanks for any input.

I've been following this thread with great interest because I have a similar problem with my CP995 - as soon as it's connected to my desktop PC and switched on, the computer instantly resets itself. I haven't even managed to get as far as installing the Nikon USB driver yet, yet alone have to worry about the correct sequence of doing things!

The camera works fine with my IBM Thinkpad laptop BTW.

Getting more and more frustrated with the situation, today, I called Nikon Tech support in the hope that they may be able to supply an answer to the problem. No such luck! The tech support chap suggested I use a card reader to get my photos because certain VIA USB motherboard chipsets are not compatible with the Nikon cameras. He did suggest that I check the VIA website for software updates though.

I just checked the VIA website and found a '4 in 1' update for the motherboard drivers to install, but I'm not very hopeful that this will effect a cure because USB problems aren't mentioned on the VIA website.

I'll report back here later if I have any success with the downlaoded file.--Gordon Tarling

In another thread I found a suggestion to check http://www.nikontechusa.com for an updated set of USB drivers. The link to download the drivers is part way down the page under "Camera Software Updates." The zipped download fits on a floppy. I don't know if this will solve the problem because I am at work and will have to wait until I get home. I will follow up whether or not it works.

Please see your email for my more extensive response to your question. I was not allowed to post my message unless I trimmed the content down to an acceptable number of words. I use a 995, Win98SE, and NikonView, so far, without any hitches. It may be elsewise with different combinations of cameras, OS, computers, etc. I would tend to agree with the message post that stated a chipset incompatibility could exist causing the computer to lock up. New installs of NikonView 4 over previous versions or even existing reinstalls of NikonView 4 could also be a primary concern for the infamous "blue screen of death."

It took a little doing but the updated drivers from the nikontechusa site did the trick!
