995 Nikon View Software crashes computer

Go to http://www.nikontechusa.com and download the updated drivers from the "Camera Software Updates section" (you will also need WinZip or a similar program). I was having the Blue Screen Of Death problem until I installed these drivers. Good luck!
Hi
Is anyone else having a problem with the Nikon View 4 software that
came with the 995?
It repeatedly crashes my computer. (Win98)
Is there an update or anything?
(I didn't see anything when I looked at nikonusa.com)
Thanks
Carol

In another thread I found a suggestion to check
http://www.nikontechusa.com for an updated set of USB drivers. The link
to download the drivers is part way down the page under "Camera
Software Updates." The zipped download fits on a floppy. I don't
know if this will solve the problem because I am at work and will
have to wait until I get home. I will follow up whether or not it
works.
What OS are you running? That webpage says that the updated driver is for use with Win98/Win98Se only, NOT for use with W2K, ME or XP!--Gordon Tarling

Since I am having similar problems with the CP 5000, should I...
1. Uninstall View 4 and Cumulus? I will be using PS to edit photos anyway.

2. Just use my CF Card Reader to move photos to my hard drive, then open them in PS?

3. Update drivers from Nikon website? My system is unstable at this point and my backup this morning failed. Yikes!

Now...if I remove View and Cumulus will I be able to transfer pictures from the camera connected to the computer?

Thanks for your help!
Laura

And the correct answer is..... Number 2.....

And don't connect your camera to the computer. No reason to uninstall Cumulus if you like using it. Just copy your images to the hard drive with a CF card reader and go on your merry way without ever having to worry if the camera sees the computer or the computer sees the camera. I make it a rule to never install software that has the camera manufacturers name in the title.

Thanks Larry-

I tried transferring with just the CF reader and no problems! Whew! As for Cumulus, I dont really have a need as I will us PS for editing. Cumulus just comes up when I transfer with the camera and that is what seems to be causing my lockup problems. Since I wont need it, do you think I should remove it? What about NikonView?

Cumulus is a management program that lets you assign key words to filter your selection of images from your hard drive. It's a very difficult program to master. I use ACDSee for my image viewing program. Much more intuitive.

I'd dump NikonView is a second of you don't need it.

BTW, there have been some issues with NikonView that once installed and unstalled, it can't be installed again. Nikon's tech support had to talk me through deleting someghing about a year and a half ago. That was with the older version that came with my CoolPix 990. That was the last time I ever tried to use it.

I'm on Win98SE. All of the info I have seen says that W2K, ME and XP should work fine (of course, we are dealing with Microsoft).

I had lots of lockup problems with cumulus (full version, latest update) and photoshop 6 (ditto) on my win98SE computer. they didn't both like being on at the same time for more than a few minutes.

i love cumulus. once you get more than a few hundred pix out there, it helps to have keyword and crossreferences to help you find things. i also note if i've entered it before in some contest, sold how many copies, etc.

under xp, despite all the pains in the padding it took me to get it all running, cumulus and photoshop seem to love each other and get along better than my kids.
