Phil has posted the news of the new G7.

"Canon's most complete compact yet." Looks very nice (DigicIII!), but no more articulated lcd screen, and the IDIOTIC removal of RAW mode. I can't see how it could possibly have affected DSLR sales, since they are designed for completely different purposes. I think Canon is getting lazy in their definition of complete. Any thoughts?

Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist

As stated, they are trying not to hurt their SLR sales...thats def it...

I see a place for a serious bridge camera myself, no RAW has crippled the appeal...Canon are losing the plot lately....bad move...

I would forget this one.....

And whats the price?

Agreed! They have completely given up on the folks who have enjoyed (or are looking for) a great full featured back up compact for their DSLR. Without RAW (and it's flexiblity for dynamic range etc), without CF cards (obviously going for the masses not a back up for higher end), and even changing the great battery from the good old 20D/30D/5D BP-511... They are confusingly placing a high end prosumer in the point and shoot crowd. IMO it's really short sighted. MANY people graduated from these cameras to DSLR (and not everyone who wants that level of photographic control needs or wants DSLR), and many others really enjoyed the interchangeability with their bigger DSLRs.

It would appear Canon is trying to force their hand with the Rebel XTi. Frankly, they may have a fight with Pentax's new K10 if that's the case. IMO LOTS of people are still interested in having DLSR functionability in a high end prosumer. Canon seems to have left that whole in the range very much on purpose (unless we get incredibly lucky and they update the Pro1... I'm not holding my breath).

It already did, several times.

But there are no Canon badges on those products.

I can only assume you refer to your Pany? Nothing they offer gives me the same features in a similar package. Still waiting, and still happy. :) I must admit, it's looking more and more like they will have the market cornered on high end prosumers soon if Canon doesn't get back in gear!

I think the issue here is that unless we are pros most of us don't really need or want DSLRs - they are heavy, ugly, and HUGE - even the small bodies require large lenses. I have a 30D, had a 20D and a 350D when what i really want is an excellent and responsive smaller camera with optical viewfinder (or a good EVF if this is possible). Its about taking pictures and we can't do that if we haven't got a camera with us - how mant of us carry a DSLR about all the time.

In the past digital technology has made things smaller - why is it that most DSLRs are bigger than 35mm SLRs??

Best Body Design:Nikon S10(Swivel screen, 10x, small, highly pocketable)

I agree completely, and have said about the same thing in some of the other threads on the topic (lot's of interest generated quickly there!). Whether it's for a backup DSLR camera, or just a really full functioned prosumer compact (which IMO isn't complete without RAW), sometimes you just don't want to take big gear around with you. As I travel a LOT space is at a premium, and I actually avoided the Pro1 at first because I thought it was larger than it actually is. It's always interesting to see what they will throw at us next!

That's a bit hard to believe, offering substandard piece for consumers in this particular segment will surely drive the consumers to choose some other brand, not a Canon DSLR. Further down the road when replacing these consumers are more likely to choose from that other brands offerings. Canon must/should know this...

IMHO I rather like the design - yes its retro - but it looks like a picture making machine. If it will be nor not, we will have to see.

Also I am happy with most of the features mentioned and it sure sounds like a merge between the G6 and the S80 which it was rumoured to be. Sadly there are features missing from both of these, which I thought was good features.

Yes the lack of RAW is most certainly one of them. I also would much more prefer a faster lens and sacrifice zoom range for it. Also to have a wide angle of at least 28mm wins hands down in my books than to have a 200mm telephoto lens.

I welcom the higher pixel count, but if that equals more noisy pictures then yes stay at 8 megapixels and so a good job of it.

One thing I am glad about and which I think didn't get mentioned in the preview is that there will be MF control if one look at the back of the camera.

No RAW?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? WTF!!!!!! Canon your marketing guys are idiots!
