Not being an expert on this, it seems Pentax' release has gotten alot more buzz than Sony's new A100. Perhaps its because anyone who has ever used a Pentax slr has a soft spot for it? We all know that there are 24 million lenses that just became shake resistant. How many KM lenses are out there that will fit the A100. I assume our base is larger than the KM lens base.

The Pentax offers much more than the Sony, which felt like a Minolta 5D, had a terrible viewfinder, although it was innovative and had both dust and shake reduction....

When the D and then DS came out, more than one old, seasoned Nikonian had fond word about their memories with Pentax and commented about how they wish Pentax would get back into the pro or semi-pro specced camera game.

Sony will release A200 next year to compete I beleive. A100 is a D50/400D/K100D competitor

The A100 got just as much buz.

for the record, their are 16 Million lenses out there that work on the A100. And that is 100% compatible. The only slight deviation is power zoom lenses don't power zoom, but those lenses are un-common.

Pentax and Sony are in the same boat. And users of both have a place for both. I'm a minolta user, so sony is just the continuation. But I like Pentax too, and this is very good news and I might start using both mounts.

Pentax and Minolta users were in many ways a special club. Both sides like both sides gear and have the coming situation of not being Canon or Nikon. Thus Minolta and Pentax users get along so well. Also both users have been able to enjoy wonderful Viewfinders compared to equivalent C and N models. Both have in body AS. Basically both sides get to enjoy similar traits in their gear.

In the end it's big guys verses little guys. So Pentax and Minolta users are both happy anytime either company brings something out. They are in the same spot market wise. Now minolta is sony, but things don't change much, for now anyways.

Heck, have you ever seen a Sony/Minolta users diss Pentax or the reverse? Don't think I have.

I agree about Minolta - not sure about Sony. Seems to be a lot of people who just showed up because Sony presented a smorgasboard of specs that seems to be little more than a 5D with some gimmicks. Mind you, I like the 5D, and it was a really great first attempt at a mid level DSLR. Somebody knocked the viewfinder in an eariler post. Its slightly bigger than the DL/k100D - no slouch. Had KM made the follow up, I imagine they would have put more emphasis on the fine details that make a difference in the field rather than dust technology. I just didn't like the Sony element - or the Sony company. I really hope the Anti-dust + SR doesn't bring hoards of fansboys to the Pentax forum. That and the trolls who are somebody else's fanboys.

I had a KM point and shoot. Nice camera. I didn't even bother with the challanges in that forum (not a dp member at the time anyway). Those guys were always getting DSLR quality shots out of the A series cameras. The Olympus users are pretty cool too. I'm starting to see more of the "OMG Pentax dropped the bomb - C*non, Nik*n, where's your g*d now?" kind of stuff going about. Lets handle are new found popularity better than David Lee Roth please.

We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it—and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove-lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove-lid again—and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one any more. - Mark Twain

Well, the Sony thing isn't great, But have to look for positives.

Pentax is in the same boat. Very likely Samsung will suck up Pentax, and then Pentax users are in the same boat. There are goods and bads to being taken by an Uber-Corp. Saidly the minolta name is gone, Samsung might leave the Pentax name if they do take them over.

One major difference is that Pentax have always been conservative and careful on cost control. This practise might have kept Pentax alive when Minolta flopped.

Yeah, I've had the same thought, although when I looked back at Sony's past I saw a history of overpriced proprietary solutions. Not just camera related either. Like the Sony CD 10 changer cartridge that cost $100 in the early 90's. My Pioneer 6 changer was $6. Part of me said, hey it's still KM, and I like my P&S. The other part said, how long before they decide 3rd party lenses void the warranty. I don't recall Sony funding them well either. Seems like they let them die on their own and then scooped up a bargain.

Regarding a buyout, the Samsung branded versions tend to sell in different countries than the ones under the Pentax label, depending on brand recognition. I think they would keep the Pentax name if nothing else. I guess Sony was too proud to keep any of the KM legacy around. Then again, Sony-Konica-Minolta would be hard to fit on the front of the camera.

I'm just hoping Pentax keeps the quality of the glass up and the prices reasonable. There's going to be a big demand. Better do some shopping for my K100D before D-Day!

There is very little different between K10d and a100.

for a newbie like me both cameras are good enough for my use. I plan to get the a100 but seeing that the k10d has vertical grip and use SD card (I am using Gx8)...hmmm...

Minolta never flopped though, economically and sales wise they were fine. What they had just made them an extremely attractive target for Sony.

Was the Samsung models largely target for Korea and some other markets in asia that tend to be anti-japanese?

I worry about the lenses too. I made my list of what to get, and the prices look good, but I definitely expect a massive lens shortage real soon.

Since 1985, 16 million Maxxum lenses. Much better sales than KAF lenses.

No, the GX-1S (DS2) is available in USA but the DS2 is not.

Prices for used Pentax lenses have gone up. SMC-F 50mm f/1.7 lens used to go for around $75 or less a few years back. Now they are around $150 used. Similar prices for SMC-F 70-210mm zoom because it is sharp.
