I got an email this morning saying my order was cancelled. I phoned
them and they said that a "computer error" had posted the wrong
price and they have cancelled all the orders they recieved over the
weekend.
Later in the day I got another email explaining the first email and
offering to sell it to me for $650 as "compensation" for my
inconvenience.
I was of course quite disappointed when I got the first email, but
when I stopped and thought about it for a minute, I realized that
they were well within their rights to cancel the order. Let's say
they had listed it for $5. It seems obvious that they should not be
liable for such an error. What about $100. Same thing. So where do
you draw the line. At under $500, they could be losing $100 or more
per camera. If several hundred people ordered cameras at that price
and they had to sell them at the price quoted, they could stand to
lose $10,000, $50,000 or more.
I felt that they were quite generous in offering it at $650 which
is a lot less than I could get it anywhere I tried in Toronto. So
I'm going to take them up on their offer.
