How Andrzej Dragan does it...

I used my 1DmkII with my 24-70 2.8 L

wit these settings:

Shutter speed: 1/125 sec
Aperture: 13
Exposure mode: Manual
Flash: Off
ISO: 100
Focal length: 24mm

I had the lens on a tripod as close to the subject as possible to get a distorted look, well at least a little distortion. I read somewhere quite a whle back that Dragan uses a tiltshift lens, I wish I would have book marked where I read that. Seems to make sense since he has that disproprtioned look to alot of his images.

Anyway, there it is incase anyone was wondering.

Interesting you mention output levels. I don't remember using that much in my Dragan attempts way back when. I'll give it a try.

I have used output levels since then though. Here is a link for a before and after (click next in the upper left for the after) in my attempt to make something out of nothing on a very drab day. I used output levels and your PWL instructions (not the action though).

I think come real close to nailing it. Unlike myself, did you actually keep track of what you did?

Thank hyou, RLjr,

This time I attempted the Dragan style, I did it totally different than the last.

I spent most of the time on getting the color near the target picture. Since 'grumpy' is so pixelated, I didn't do an overall sharpening or use a channel for detail. I would do that if the picture was clean.

Used the sharpen tool to selectively sharpen eyes, wrinkles, beard.

Burned highlights to tone them down, including the whites of the eyes and the beard.

Smudged the eyes and added highlights. Also added some color.

Darkened the background by painting on a layer in multiply mode.

I think that was all :)

looks like you matched that picture to me too.

to getting it "right". Freelancer54, you got the color so spot on it really has the Dragan "look".

I also notice as I look at Dragans stuff that no one is ever looking down, unlike in the sample posted by the originator of this thread. His subjects appear to always be looking up or straight at him. I think this helps with shadow play and helps his post editing too. Plus that is just a golden rule of fine portraiture to never be lower then your subject unless your going for that effect..

Hi RLjr,

I agree, the color is a major aspect of his work. I'm also betting that if we saw all his raw photos, we'd think they were outstanding as well. His ability to capture the moment effectively is superior. We can only have some fun testing techniques on ordinary photos to try and figure out what tools he has used to get the results he does, but we'll never do a 'Dragan' :)

He doesn't stick to one color scheme either, his work is varied. It might be fun to see if this same original photo can be made to match his other styles.... Or maybe we can find a better original, it wasn't fun working with a low quality jpg.
