Today I finally got some decent pictures of the species Aeshna grandis.

This is one the largest dragonflies here in Denmark ... and quite alert and difficult to get close..

and here is the original size

here is another shot of this magnificent creature... its more than three inches long... here it is chewing on a white butterfly...

And in contrast ... here is the smallest dragonfly...Sympetrum danae, its less that one inch long.. but a very elegant little creature.

You really should take a look at the original.... Its sharp !!!

No... I just slowly moved closer and closer... it did fly away many times but kept coming back to his favourite twig... not all dragonflies are so cooperative though....

... so I guess these are loosing shots? And winners too....But these are wonderfull, sharp and real nice pictures in composition, background, color etc. I especially like the giant and also the one sitting on a piece of bent carton. Did you place that? To make it sit there? It's a must to see the originals in that gallery!

Frits the Dragonfighter!

you can be proud of your images!!!

My favorite is the 3rd photo, nice composition in the shape of number "7", but couldn't you move "frame" a little to the left (more space on left side). I think you should crop less central.
It is only my opinion, never mind ;-)

It's a pity that on the 2nd photo dragonfly sits parallel to the branch. Because of that she is less visible.

Anyway beautiful pictures! Congratulations! And sharpness is super, I saw full res.!!!

Frits, your shots are getting so good I fear you might get hit by nemesis and the envy from above.

So I found a backdoor for you: your present photos are so much better than the ones you did before that your former self looses the competition with your present self, and all is not perfect anymore, and the Gods are pleased again ... just a little joke to releave tension.

But I still wonder where you've been these last two weeks. I fear you bought that car anyway and have had all kinds of problems with it....

Frits, really beautiful, and so often you also managed wonderful compositions - particularly the first one you post of the Aeshna grandis.

In this way I also really appreciated the one 'snicked' below from your gallery.

I have to write before I see what things others have written - learning my lesson on this, as Ole often gets a very good comment in and then I have to see I should ;).

Best, and thank you again for this sharing.

Its possible it should be "framed" a little different... as it is , it is not cropped at all... its exactly as I took it.
It is only my opinion, never mind ;-)
I dont mind :) Good to hear your opinion.

Yes... I did take some with the body less parrallel to the branch...but they were not so sharp...:(

Okay .. now I understand :)

I do not fear any envy from above... as there are so many "dragonfly-photographers" that are so much better than me.... especially here in denmark...have you ever heard of Erland Refling Nielsen, Frank Joe Hansen , Thomas Hornum Jensen and Anne Vibeke Tossell... they are the real "dragonmasters".... I have a lot to learn still... which is good !

I like dragonflies as subjects , partly because they are so challenging..not only are they vary alert and fast moving they also force you to think about focusing technique as they are createted in such a unpractical shape ...its really immpossible to get focus on the entire insect ... you will have to make some choises..
But if it was easy to photograph Dragonflies.. it would be too boring...:)
But I still wonder where you've been these last two weeks. I fear
you bought that car anyway and have had all kinds of problems with
it....
No ... no car yet... I havent really been anywhere... just enjoying the nice weather....and going to work from time to time...:(

Thank you Clive... yes thats what happens.... in the beginning , I was happy just to get any picture at all... then you try to get closer and closer..."Wow , I can see the eye-structure.." "Wow , I can see all the little hairs on his back..."...

When these basic skill are becomeing natural "in your backbone"... you can gradually try to work on the photographic qualities of your pictures...maybe even someday create some art.. :)

I guess this line of progress applies to all sub-genres of photography...Portrait, landscape, sport ... whatever...

Very good capture of these Dragonflies. I know how patient one must
be to capture them.....I had many, many failures when I first
attempted to photograph them.
Very good.
Boris
I still have many failures :) but that is what makes these creatures so challenging.... its never boring to shoot dragonflies... you will have to give it all you got :)
