Would you buy the 350D now? Or just wait it out? Rivals, etc

There are new rivals (The Sony DSLR comes to mind) and rumors abound about a new 10.2 MP Nikon and a new version of the Rebel. Should I just put the $700+ aside for the newer camera, or buy now and be disappointed in a few months when the prices on the 350D plummet and/or the new models are superior?

I'm not sure what to do.

Well, the Sony Alpha already out on shelves, and is getting mediocre reviews. We all know its sensor isn't anywhere nearly as clean as the 350D, but then what surprised everyone is that it's also noisier than the Nikon D200. (The D200 supposedly uses the same sensor as the Alpha.)

Its sensor dust removal feature wasn't working well, and Image Stabilization doesn't show on the view finder.

The 10.2 MP Nikon will be interesting. It's probably the Nikon D70 replacement. The 350D successor will be interesting to see also. Neither of these camera can be better than their big brothers (Nikon D200 and Canon 30D), however. So chances are we'll see only minor enhancements like larger LCD screen, more comfortable grips, etc.

I doubt the price for the 350D will drop further, as it's already very cheap compared to the debut price. The 350D successor will likely cost $300 more when it comes out, so there's still a lot of reasons to buy the 350D.

If you need the camera now, then buy it, and I'm sure you can ebay it for 90% of the value if you decide to switch later. If not wait a few months.

I was surprised at the Sony Alpha's poorer IQ compared to the D200. From just IQ I would stick with Canon because the XT, and its replacement will not be better than the 30D, and since they are both the same basically IQ-wise, I would feel pretty comfortable the the new Nikon would not be better than the XT replacement in term of IQ. However, if the extra 2 MPs are important for you because you need to crop often, or you are waiting to see how feature rich it is compared to Canon's offering.

Seems to me that Canon holds the upperhand in sensor and image processing and they are offering the leat amount of features but they still sells lot of DSLR, Nikon is in the middle, while Sony, Olympus are offering as much features as possible, because their sensors aren't as good. It all depends on your priorities.

I'm leaving lens selection out of this discussion.

if I made sense, I'm sorry

A new 20D. There is not too much of a difference in price anymore. There are still some available.

Just my opinion. I like my 350D but I am not keen on the menu driven controls combined with the miniscule LCD screen to view the menu on.

I like the images my 350D provides but, I really like shooting my 10D better than shooting the 350D - mostly due to the menu driven controls on the 350D.

Nikon has jump the gun on the D80/D90 release. It was suppose to be announce on September, not now. Something is up! Nikon is usully rather slow and deliberate.

My guess is Canon will be forced to respond as well. The Canon 400d will probably be announce shortly after the Nikon's D80/D90 news release.

I think it's a fair question. I'm tempted too by the 350D, but put off slightly by the small LCD now I'm used to a 2.5 inch one on my little camera. And the lack of a spot metering mode, which I use on other cameras.

While neither of these things are dealbreakers, since I'm in no hurry to buy a dSLR, I feel I may as well wait. Unless these things are not going to change. But who knows, in the meantime, Nikon may come uip with something irresistible. I doubt it, but you never know. And if they do , it'll make it all the more likely that the 400D (or whatever they call it) will be worth waiting for.

Once I've bought whatever I buy, I shan't care about new models, but just before buying, it's worth thinking about.

A 6 month turnover on the 30D! ;-) I do like the idea that a company can "respond" with a superior product shortly after a competitor reveals a new one.

I agree that the best camera to get at this point is the 20D, assuming it can be had new for under $1k. Two years ago I wasn't even sure of the model... funny how its status has improved with time!

When is the camera show, anyway? And where do you get your news about it? How long does it usually take from announcement of a product to see it on store shelves?
With that said, I would not purchase a new camera if there was a
major camera show in just a week or two.

Whenever you ask the should I wait question on dpreview you are going to hear the "if you wait to buy there is always something better mantra" but personally I think waiting -probably no more than a month- is worth the patience to see what's next. You will always still be able to buy the old model at a lower price but you also have the option of the cameras. Nikon's new camera is less than two weeks away from an announment so I doubt Canon will be to far behind....As for the Sony A100 I say let wait for some more reviews and user opinions before crossing it of your list. When any new camera is released there are at least as many-if not more- naysayers about the camera. It's practically a formulae.

One point to think about...

Canon - MASSIVE lense range..lots of peripherals etc
Nikon - ditton

Sony.... I'll be honest i don't even know what the lens mount is

I've got a 350...I've just spent a very pleasant evening in a pub with a great friend looking at his pictures off his 300..on his laptop.. and off his 6mp camera in RAW the pictures were truly amazing

200+ shots of which there were some stunners..

I'm not rubbishing the Sony..just not sure what the system is..

I strived for years to finally get to a Canon system...I've gone from 35mm to Digital..and I'm 101% delighted...

My lenses that i had before fitted and the results never fail to make me go and try some more... I feel I'm improving (even if others dont...I'M HAPPY and thats all that counts) and I've had at least 4 people say "can I have a copy of that..."

So..don't be swayed by a 10Mp hype.. if Sonys good for you go for it..I'm jolly glad I stayed with my Canon... Had i gone for Nikon all those years ago I might be saying "I'm jolly glad i went for Nikon"..

Go for whats good for you..and enjoy

(ps my PC is 2 generations behind the fastest box...but I still use it!)
Get my point?

Sony is basically the Konica-Minolta system .... same mount, same everything
all of the old Minolta lenses should fit the sony.

Given that sony starts out with a reasonable supply of lenses :)

If you want a camera now then I say go for it. I don't see any of
the new cameras blowing the XT out of the water and you get the
benefit of taking pictures today!
If you can afford to get an XT and then are willing to invest later
in Canon and 2nd party glass, go for it. If you are already a "Sony"
person, it don't matter... you're going Sony and unknown glass.

I don't pay that much attention, but they are usually talking about the new camera shows on the forums at least one month in advance of the show.

The other way is with the news part of this forum:

on the home page:
http://www.dpreview.com/

This is the last article I say on the next camera show:

You couldn't have said it better. I just bought and XT for$619 and the camera is great! Now I'm looking for a second lens, maybe a 70 - 200...
